2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hope so! 😳 I saw on the thread from last year that someone got an interview invite on the day before Thanksgiving to a site I'm applying to! Granted it's a large site with many tracks, but I can hope...right??? :xf:

So far I have 1 interview, 1 site withdrew from the match, and no rejections (yet) - waiting on 15. I would *love* to have one more interview before Thanksgiving! Good luck tomorrow everyone!

Yay!!! I got my wish! 😀 That exact site I was thinking of just e-mailed with an interview offer 🙂 It's the Nebraska Internship Consortium (Munroe-Meyer Institute Track). YAY!!!😍

I hate it when I see a site has offered interviews, but in a different track. For example, I applied to Duke (adult) and MUSC (addictions). Interview offers for Duke (child) and MUSC (NP) have gone out, which makes me wonder if interviews for all tracks went out or just these tracks. I guess, no news is better than a rejection... unless it's a late rejection.

I applied to both of those sites/tracks last year and provided things are operating the same way, track invites go out separately. Duke child people heard way before the adult people did, and MUSC is one of those sites with rolling interview notifications (friends of mine got invites a week before I did). So....hold tight! 😛

Congratulations! Perfect right before Thanksgiving. I was wondering if anyone would hear today.

Hahaha, me too...glad to know its not just me. I think I actually jumped a few times when it beeped today

Just wait until match day morning! Last year me and two of my friends got up at 6am, pushed two couches together and huddled under blankets waiting to hear the rattlesnake noise from my phone that signaled a new email. If i wasn't scared of snakes before, I sure am now....

One easy way to avoid checking your e-mail every 2 seconds...have the internet go out. ALL DAY LONG!!! Comcast has been having some MAJOR issues in my area recently and internet has been out all day in my neighborhood. I went into school to print some stuff (and check my e-mail every 2 seconds) and am now at a packed Starbucks with everyone else checking their e-mails 🙂 At least I got a decent amount of baking done...

Omg I would DIE.

Got a rejection from FCI Tallahassee. One of the most detailed/to the point rejections so far. The subject line: No Interview at FCI Tallahassee. No wondering what's on the inside with that one! 😛

My interview invite from them was not particuarly warm and fuzzy either...

I received an interview invitation from Nationwide Children's Hospital (Clinical Child track) today!

My best near heart attack yet: Getting the lovely email from Boston Consortium this morning. It really was a lovely email, but it wasn't immediately clear that they were writing to say they had my application. It wasn't until like the 3rd or 4th paragraph that I was able to understand that they were not rejecting or inviting me. Kinda hilarious, and very nice, but oh so scary!

I'll be cracking up if someone gets an invite or rejection tomorrow for TurkeDay 😍

I took the day off on my match day, as I figured i'd either celebrate or drown my sorrows. My e-mail buzzed, I checked, and then I went back to sleep. It was the best sleep I had in months.

That has happened before, as it happened to me. I was all excited, only to find out it was an e-mail to say they received a ton of apps (350+?) and they needed more time. Great site.

Just got a call from Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine yesterday (generally I lurk, but as nobody seems to have posted this one yet...)

Happy thanksgiving! 🙂

AHHH me too! I was having a slow heart attack b/c my email on my phone was taking too long to load. It was a very kind email, but at the end I'm like.. seriously?!?! I submitted my stuff a month ago, haha. Glad to know I wasn't the only one!😱

Durham VA sent out some invites

edit: ditto (should read other posts before I post lol)

Y'all are making me jealous. No invites yet here :-( Fortunately none of my programs have been mentioned yet so no freaking out!

just got rejected from Seattle VA via e-mail 🙁

I had that feeling literally just 3 days ago, they will come. I know enough about you to know that you are very intelligent and competent, and I am sure you are a very strong applicant.

I've been lurking for awhile and thought I'd contribute since a few of these weren't mentioned yet. So far I've gotten invites from: UCSF, MUSC, Duke, Beth Israel Harvard, Hartford Consortium, Seattle Puget Sound VA, and UIC.

I know that some people heard from UCSD/VA, Harvard Mass General, and Bellevue (adult) but I am still waiting to hear from those either way. Anyone else waiting to hear from those?

Has anyone had any luck with specific sites requesting alternate interview dates from the dates they offer? I have a few potential conflicts coming up and I was wondering what sites tend to be more flexible. One site I got an interview from only offered me one date and made it clear from the email that was the only choice so I went for it, but 2 sites I'm waiting to hear from also have that as a preferred date so I'm not sure what I'll do if I also get an offer from one of those.

What tracks did you hear from at MUSC & Duke?

I'm still waiting to hear from Harvard Mass General too. I haven't heard anything from Duke (adult CBT), and I thought I was a good match there. When you got the email from Duke did it appear like it went out to everyone invited to the Adult CBT track?

The Duke email was very general so it may have been sent to all but there is no way to tell. The MUSC email was personalized so I could tell they do those individually.

I'm waiting to hear from Bellevue Adult as well... :xf:

Random question...what would you all recommend wearing for an Open House, held the day before an interview? I have a good suit & blouse for the interview day, but I'm not sure what I should wear for the Open House. It's a fairly structured Open House with presentations from directors of various rotations within the track, plus some sort of social event with interns afterwards (I'm guessing dinner based on the time of day but it doesn't specify). I was thinking maybe black pants with a nice sweater? Slightly more casual than a suit but still relatively formal. Thoughts?

I think that sounds good. Business casual 🙂

Thanks! 🙂 I have certainly enjoyed break thus far (especially a break from being glued to my e-mail) but....I'm ready for it to be Monday 😳 Good luck this coming week everybody! :luck::xf:

You too blindchaos, it will certainly be an interesting week! Hopefully we will get enough interview offers that we feel comfortable that we will land somewhere great!

That brings up an interesting point, Irish. What number of interviews would people feel comfortable with? I know it could only take one good interview to match at a great site, but personally I would be freaked if I had just one interview total (have 2 at the moment, waiting on 14). I *think* I would feel relatively comfortable with my chances of matching at a decent place with 5+ interviews. MAYBE 4 depending on where the interviews are, but I think I would be happy with 5 and up. More would be great, but I think I'd be content with 5. Things are shaping up well so far at least - I'd be thrilled to match at either of the 2 sites where I have an interview 😍

I agree, I would love to have interviews at five sites that are a good match. If I get a few more than that, that would be great, but there will also be a point not much above five where it is just too much. Hopefully I will have that problem, it is a good problem to have.

Re: Number of interviews... I think I'd feel good with 7, just because *everyone* in my program who has ever gotten at least 7 interviews has matched. So for me, that is my magic number. So far I've gotten 2 interviews so I'm crossing my fingers for 5 more!

When I interviewed, albeit many years ago, I had to essentially withdraw my application from one site due to a conflict. However, another site (Duke, actually) was very accommodating, and allowed me to come on an alternate date. There was at least 1 other applicant who was there on the same date, and I vaguely remember some back and forth so that they were able to schedule just 1 alternate day, and not a bunch for individual applicants. Hope that helps.

I'd *STRONGLY* recommend buying a calendar and listing the possible interview dates of your sites. Not all of these dates will be listed, but many will be available in the site materials. Don't freak out if you don't know when some sites offer interviews, but the more dates you have, the better informed decision you can make about interview date selection.

It will be very helpful to know which sites may have conflicting dates and which sites will have unique interview days. For applicants who receive 7+ interviews, it is particularly helpful because many sites will have MON & FRI dates, and there are only so many Mondays and Fridays in December and January. As a general rule, if your site interviews mid-week, I would recommend taking that date if you can swing it. Less sites offer mid-week interviews, so you will be less likely to have conflicting dates. Mid-week dates can also help save on travel if you can fly destination to destination because the cost of 1 night at a hotel is typically less than a RT flight and less wear and tear on the interviewer.

I thought I'd re-post this now that more interviews are being handed out.

I don't think there is ever really any "safe" number, since much of it depends on the particular sites you got interviews at (how competitive are they, how many people do they interview, how good of a fit are they, how well you do at the interviews, etc) plus a bit of luck. I've heard of people having as few as 2 interviews matching as well as several people with 10+ interviews not matching at all. You just never know.

9 interviews and ranking 9 sites gives you a 99% chance to match I've been told. I'll have to dig up the data

I'm going to second what JeNeSaisQuoi said about a "safe" number, there are a lot of factors that go into the match that are often overlooked. I think the number of highly competitive sites is a very important consideration. That said, according to APPIC those who matched ranked 7.8 sites (thus presumably had ~8 interviews) while those who didn't match ranked 4.4 sites. So, 7-8 at least puts you in the average range. Despite the anecdotal evidence of the few people that ranked 2 sites and matched or the few people that ranked 10+ and didn't, it seems that, all things being equal, the more sites your able to rank the better your odds of matching.

9 interviews and ranking 9 sites gives you a 99% chance to match I've been told. I'll have to dig up the data

That would depend on the sites..you have to look at the number of people they interview and how many spots they have to figure out your probability for each site then you can make the calculation based on that. So it can be highly variable since some sites might end up matching 30% of the people they interview, whereas others it's more like 5% -- there is quite a range. Also you probably have a better shot at sites that have more positions for the track you want, as opposed to sites that only take 1 person for each track. But then one variable you don't have is how many people they ranked high but got passed over because those people matched at other sites they preferred...and there is no way to get that info, but probably more competitive sites are more likely to get their top people rather than going farther down their list.

P.S. Does anyone know if there is data on the average number of people each site ranks per position and the average of how far down the list sites typically go to get their match? I know we have the data for applicants but I haven't seen it for the sites match statistics.

I have been really interested in knowing this as well. I keep telling myself I don't have to be ranked first, I just need to get somewhere near the top on multiple ranking lists. I hope counseling centers will start sending out invites this week. So far I have two interviews. I am hoping to at least get 5, 7-8 would be wonderful.

I found this on the APPIC site at

http://www.appic.org/match/5_2_2_1_12_match_about_statistics_general_2010.html

RANKINGS
Average Number of Applicants Ranked Per Position Offered for Each Program:
Programs Filling All Positions 8.3
Programs With Unfilled Positions 2.8
All Programs 7.5
Each Registered Applicant Was Ranked by an Average of 5.3 Different Programs.

So, if I am going by averages, if I apply to a site where 3 positions are offered, it would be expected that about 24 people would be ranked (in a average program that fills all positions), 22 people (average for all programs) or about 9 people (average in programs that have unfilled positions).
This actually makes me feel very encouraged.🙂

Getting anxious heading up to this week! Just keep trying to tell myself that none of my sites will notify until the 15th so I don't keep hoping for something and then all I hear are the crickets hanging out in my inbox.

Good luck everyone!
