Just got a rejection from Nova Psychology Services Center. They were a safety site for me so I'm not too upset. I also knew I wasn't a good match since they focus on trauma.

I am getting concerned, however, b/c I only have 3 interviews and am still waiting on 4 sites.

I was riding a wave of 3 interview invites at some of my top sites and now this rejection just brought me back down to earth. 🙁

Consensus seems to be that the training staff at American Lake may never contact any applicants prior to ranking. What is anyone choosing to do?

A fellow applicant and I are torn: on one hand, they have a seemingly strong program, but on the other hand, the expense of traveling to see a sight where I could rank 120 out of 125 applicants just doesn't seem effective. Feedback, anyone?

Srei, the process IS screwed up and I would never suggest it is not. Plenty of great applicants have a tough time. My response to HVD2011 is specific to multiple attempts. If the second time around a person has beefed up their CV, fine-tuned their application materials, and actually defended their dissertation as he/she did (HUGE plus for any site) and is not getting any interviews then the problem is likely larger than any amount of venting on a forum can help with. Unless a person is applying for positions that are WAY out of sync with their training (e.g. child person applying to VAs, CBT person applying to hard-core dynamic sites) then getting a few interviews (not a majority, but just some) should not be that elusive. My point is that the person should turn to their program and find out what the problem is. Yeah, the process stinks but trouble like that cannot be dismissed with a simple "bad system" excuse.

I agree with much of this and would like to comment as well. I want to reiterate that it's screwed up system, and because of the deficit, there will be phenomenal candidates every year that don't get a site. It's unfortunate and I sympathize. I went through the match last year and still have PTSD symptoms from it! Even though I matched the first time through and got my #1 choice of site. Speaking to my friends about it on the phone makes me want to crawl into my closet and not come out! And this is from a person who for all intents and purposes got exactly what she wanted! So, I know the level of frustration and anxiety anger must be through the roof for someone who has to do all of this again with no clear indication as to why they got rejected the first time.

What I have learned from the process is that it doesn't matter if you have 20 publications and your dissertation is done, etc. etc. At least not really, because in that case you have to wonder why the person with 2 publications who didn't have their dissertation done matched over you, and those reasons are extremely subjective. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't have that stuff, you should, but as someone who is at an APA accredited site and knows what my site is looking for and discussed it with my supervisors etc., it seems that essays have a big weight to it. EVERYONE looks the same and the essays are the only way that people stand out. Being able to give a sense of who you truly are seems to be important, I've read over internship applications and baffled at how generic and cookie cutter some of them seem. When training staff read these essays, I'm sure they are thinking "hmm, what would it be like to work WITH this person," not just "WOW, look at all that experience." Also, I found that with some of my classmates, I think that ego got in their way. Some people only applied to top tier APA sites. There are great sites that are APA accredited that are 20 hours from anything that get 30 applications and would have likely given an interview, but obviously no one applies there.

Internship is a ferocious beast in my opinion and you have to attack it as such. It's really an unforgiving process, and I really truly hope the best for all of you.

I don't know that I have much helpful feedback, but I'll share my thoughts about this. I'm debating about emailing the site on Thursday if I don't hear anything tomorrow, inquiring about the status of my application. I'm a bit hesitant as I do feel hyper-aware of making a "wrong" move, but it feels a little crazy to fly 1200 miles without any indication of whether or not I'm still in the running.

Now, having said that, if the feedback I get suggests that they don't make any real decisions about applicants until they rank them, I think I will attend the open house. The site seems to have great training, there've been a few graduates from my program (which is far from a "traditional" starting point for a career in neuropsych) who have attended the American Lake VA and gone onto great postdocs and careers in neuropsych, and my SO travels to the NW for work on a regular basis so it would make the long distance thing more doable. Obviously some reasons individual to me, but I do feel like it might be worth the trip if you're considering ranking the site.
 
Forensic Psych, I hear you couldn't agree more. There are many factors involved. We can never know if it is fit, unrealistic sites, stats, personality, or whatever. All we (total strangers, but fellow sufferers :laugh:) can do is offer a collective rage against the system. I know the process is horrible and hope for something to be done to make it better soon but right now, railing against it is not helpful for applicants.

If anyone is stressing about lack of interviews then working with people who know you and can guide you is your best bet. Embrace the absurdity and focus on positive energy for your interviews because you only need one site to love you. 👍

One of the places I applied to has a notification of Jan 7th.

Congrats- I got a rejection from them- I really wanted that one. On a positive noted I was invited to interview at the University of Florida CC, College of William and Mary CC, University of Maine CC, University of Wisconsin- Madison CC, Washington State CC, and Miami University in Ohio CC.

I did see that. I am simply going to email the TD and report that I am actually not requesting a visit, but AM, of course, interested in the site.

So, the "visits".....are they actually interviews? I mean, do you get to sit-down with people and talk and get asked questions about interests/training background and goals? If you don't go to a visit, do they call and do a telephone interview thing with you? Do they even tell people who they have excluded from consideration? I find it hard to believe that they would go through the pain-staking process of ranking 150 people.

What a horrible day... rejection from my top choice (already mentioned on the thread), and, worse, my boyfriend's grandfather just died... 🙁

All good questions. I could definitely appreciate the elective interview concept in theory, but in action it elicits wayyyy too much confusion. I am thinking that they probably do not rank applicants until they are contacted by them, but only they know... :eyebrow:
I may do that too (email Dr. Linton that I am still interested in the site but decline a visit) - if you don't mind! - but also ask what options there are in terms of interviewing with faculty.

I think that visiting *may* help an applicant. I know the TD and for the general application/interview process (not specific to his site), he encourages a lot of contact (e-mail before you submit your app, e-mail after you submit your app, e-mail to confirm interview, e-mail/write after the interview). I would say at the very least, e-mail him and, if it is possible for you and you are interested enough, visit. He pays *very* close attention to very small details so proof read your e-mail(s) carefully (not that you wouldn't go over them anyway...he's just fairly particular and is understandably frustrated by the frequent typos people put in his own name as well as that of the site - ie: it's CAMC, not CMAC).

Please note - I am not buddy/buddy with the TD and cannot ask him about specific applications and it would be awfully strange to ask him what he prefers applicants do regarding visiting/not visiting. The information above is based solely on hearing him speak (at length) about the application/interview process. Feel free to ask questions if you'd like and I'll do my best to answer based on what he has said, but again his comments were about the general process. Anyway...just thought I'd throw that in there. Definitely e-mail at the very least to express your continued interest in the program (with brief but specific examples of what you like about the program). Good luck! :luck:

I feel the same way you do. I guess I did not realize that without internship no graduation and heaven forbid you get an internship at a site not sanctified by the apa or appic, it is still no graduation. I just wanted to be a better therapist with more to offer but if I don't get an internship I can forget about that. I have 2 interviews, 8 rejections and 6 sites I have not heard from. Someone said that it is through the essays that we can be distinguished from each other. If that's true then I don't have a chance because my essays were absolutely awful. I have never struggled so much to write so little and so poorly. I cannot write knowing that every word I put down will be excruciatingly studied and then changed. Maybe allowing internships from non-participating sites would help at least for graduation. Right now it's the only system we have so I have to accept it and put my best face forward. Best of luck to everyone including me.

This process really teaches you about resiliency and how much strenght of character you have. Since I entered graduate school, I always feared having to go through this process and I thought that just the stress of it would be too much for me to handle. Not only do I have to compete with so many other great students but I am an ESL graduate student who only started to learn English about 9 years ago. So I have had to fight against odds to get through the program and prove myself to make it this far in a field that requires you to communicate with people in a language which is not my native language. And now that I am going through this process, things could not be worse, my father is sick and hospitalized, a close family member just passed away at a young age from heart attack, a good friend of mine is quite sick, and I have been getting mostly rejection letters. And yesterday, when I thought things could not get any worse, after receiving 4 rejection letters in a row I also found out that my boyfriend is cheating on me. His reasons: I have been too stressed out and grumpy lately!
My point for sharing all of this is that I understand that people feel angry and frustrated. But I believe that things could still be worse and "what does not kill me will only make me stronger." I believe that this is a good attitude to have in stressful times like this.

Rejection from University of Notre Dame CC. One of my top choices, oh well. 🙁 At least they sent the nicest mass rejection email I've received. :laugh:

Is anyone else waiting to hear back from duPont still? I know interviews went out awhile ago, so I'm sure it's a rejection, but I wish they would send them out already. It's the last site I haven't yet heard from.

I'm still waiting on dupont as well and am also thinking it's a rejection. Has anyone received a rejection from dupont?
 
Hi,

Has anyone applied to St. Johns Child and Family Development Center in Santa Monica? They have two open house dates (they strong recommend going) which I am unable to attend and then they scheduled me for an interview that is only an hour long later in the month. I was wondering if anyone else is in the same position or has any suggestions for what to do? I am very interested in the site and main problem is flying to CA for an hour interview without being able to see the facilities or meet other interns.

Any thoughts?
 
Generic interview offer received this morning 🙂

Interviews are: January 7, January 10, January 21 and January 24. Also, phone interviews are offered on January 13.

Is anyone still waiting on uf health sciences center - health psych track? Ive seen invites go out on this forum but am holding on to hope!

I just received a generic email stating that they "will be in touch in the very near future with a selection of interview dates"

I'm in the same boat with dupont. I haven't gotten a rejection, but I know invites went out awhile ago. Seriously, I find it really annoying that they just can't send a stupid rejection letter so I can officially take it off my list and feel like I can safely book flights, etc.

A classmate of my applied - they told her it would be in the next "few days" due to some sort of problem on their end.

As far as I can tell from this thread, only one person has said they got an invite, and that was back on November 12th.

Has anyone else heard anything--any track, either way?
 
Anything from Trinitas (their deadline is 12/20)? rejections? invites?

I may be the individual to whom you're referring, as I heard from UF neuro back in mid-November. To provide additional information, a classmate heard back from their medical/health psych track in (I believe) November as well, although I didn't ask the exact notification date.
