2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know what you mean! I just want to get the rejections already so I can go ahead and cross them off of my list!!

i'm waiting on st. luke's, so i guess i won't be surprised if i get an email at midnight. i have two interviews (thus far...), so i am definitely feeling your frustration.

You guys just made me feel about a million times better. Thanks 🙂.

And hey, for St. Luke's, don't necessarily lose hope. Someone got an interview from them this week so... I don't know, I had mostly written them off but nothing is for sure. I guess I'm trying to promote hopefulness even in the midst of this frustration 😛 FYI, the subject line of the email was "Hello and St. Luke's Roosevelt Internship Information" and I got a little hopeful when I saw that it said "Hello" in the subject... seemed kind of friendly. After I realized it was a rejection, I thought "Hello" in the the subject line seemed really strange

I don't know how this happened, but apparently, I put the wrong numbers in for the clients I've worked with under race/ethnicity. I definitely put down 15 under American Indian/Alaska Native/Aboriginal Canadian instead of African-American/Black/African Origin. This can't be good. Any one know if there's anything I should do?🙁

At this point I don't think there is anything you can do (or really need to.) Unless you're applying to American Indian focused internships and that's why they picked you based on your reported experiences I think you're fine. (If you DID apply to some specialty like this then I do think you're obligated to notify them.)

I wouldn't say anything on interviews unless someone asks and then just explain the mistake. JMHO.

I am still waiting on 5 sites. This is driving me nuts.

If anybody has heard from the following, let me know:

U of Maryland CC (long shot, but oh well)
John L. Gildner
Howard U CC
Superior Courts of DC, Child Guidance Clinic (thought it looks like they have until the 17th)
Rappahannock Area Community Service Board

Most of those sites had the 15th as their date to inform about interviews.
:scared:

I am still waiting on John L Gildner as well. I have not heard anything yet. Are you still waiting? Good Luck!

I just got my rejection from Karen Horney clinic. They forgot to mention the name of the site in the email. I had to go back to the APPIC listing to see if the program directors name matched. It is almost as if they pushed this process to the very last minute and quickly went through the applicants. I mean, who sends an email with typos that neglects to put the name of the site at 11:25 at night?

Got a rejection from Trinitas,

Oh well. I have 8 interviews setup and so I am extremely happy. I hear that this is a good number to work with. We'll see I guess.

Agree. I got my St. Luke's rejection at about 4:00 this afternoon. The subject line with "Hello.." was very strange for a rejection and got me hopeful as well. Again it seems like this site pushed stuff off to the very last minute.

Hi Everyone,

I applied to 15 sites, got one interview, 13 rejections, 1 unknown. I am fairly certain i will not get the one i interviewed for, because my program is not apa accredited yet... it probably will be next year (fingers crossed).

here's my question, if i go through the match and rank the one site, and don't match, can i still try again next year? or do i have to withdraw prior to ranking...

i applied to a fairly equal number of accredited and non-accredited internships, and i was shocked to not get interviews at some non-apa sites that i think i'm way more than qualified for. it makes no sense. unless they also want only apa applicants?

thanks!

I guess Maryland CC is running a little late?

Has anyone NOT heard from central Texas yet? I see people saying they got both interviews and rejections but I've heard nothing.

I just realized that there are 2 central Texas sites. One is a VA and the other site is the forensic adolescent one that I applied for. Has anyone heard from the forensic adolescent one? Their notification date said 12/15 & I have not heard from them yet. Did anyone here apply there?

FYI, Albany Consortium gave forewarned notice to it applicants that suggested that they would not be making the Dec 15th deadline. I have an email from Dec 3rd stating that it would take them "a couple weeks" to sort through and start offering interviews. Thus, I'm not overly surprised that we didn't hear from them today. Sounds like it will probably be Friday at the earliest.

Hi Everyone,

here's my question, if i go through the match and rank the one site, and don't match, can i still try again next year? or do i have to withdraw prior to ranking...

I'm sorry about your interview results - this process does seem random a lot of the time and it seems like some fantastic applicants get the short end of the stick. There's still a chance that you may match at the one site (someone in my program had one interview and ended up matching there a few years ago) but it is good to prepare for a second run just in case.

To answer your question - you're absolutely able to try again next year if you don't match. The only reason you would withdraw (as far as I know) is if you don't want to submit rankings or risk being matched to any of your sites (in which case you'd HAVE to intern at your matched site). I'd suggest ranking your interview and any other site you applied to that you think may rank all their applicants. What's the harm, right?

Fingers crossed it works out for you!! And if it doesn't, you should be just fine to try again next year.

Does anyone know what the deal is with Andrus Children's Center. The appic website last date for interview notification is January 15th with attempts to notify by Dec. 15.

Of course it is the last site I need to hear from. With all rejections and 0 interviews so far I obviously am no longer hopeful. But do I email the TD to see whats up or do I have to wait until January?😕

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have to wait until January. WHICH. SUCKS!

However, I do not see the harm in asking them the status of your application perhaps in the next week. "Attempts to notify by December 15" sounds like they are continuing to consider all applications. Sadly, it just puts you in a difficult position of having to wait for some time to hear either way. 😳

I'm sorry to hear this.

You can apply as many times as you want. If you are offered an interview this year, choose to rank, AND END UP BEING MATCHED, then you are bound to the agreement to attend that site. So, if you are not "picky" about the site and would be happy to go there, then go ahead! However, if it is not a site you wish to be in, then I suggest you drop all baskets and start to prep for next year (e.g., get more clinical experience, take part in research). This can be especially tough for non-accredited sites, so additional clinical experience, research, etc., can only add to your qualifications.

Best of luck! 🙂

8 is definitely a solid number, especially this year considering the increased number of applicants/applications.

Now that the waiting is done (or nearly done) for most of us, it's simply time to redirect our energies to preparing for interviews, and to returning to "life as usual."

Anyone still waiting on Oklahoma HSC? I know a bunch of calls went out a long time ago.

I am waiting on 4 sites with the earliest notification date of 12/20 going into the beginning of January. So my tally so far is 11 rejections, waiting on 4, 2 interviews scheduled the first being tomorrow. 😀

Yeah, I am. I know people were invited a while ago, but I haven't heard either way...

Has anyone mentioned getting rejections (not just invites)? They are the only site I am waiting for too...

Not that I am aware of. I haven't heard anyone getting a rejection yet.

I also haven't heard from:
Togus VA
Memphis VA
Henry Ford

I know some invites went out for two of the above, but this missing the deadline stuff is lame....

I actually got an interview invite last week for the outpatient track. Sorry!

mmmm.... I wonder if they're just NOT sending out rejections at all for some reason. Or, maybe the'yll do it eventually as an afterthought.

i got an email rejection from Togus VA yesterday. I'd check your spam or give them a call today. I'm also waiting on Oklahoma University HSC and Hudson Valley VA (and pretty irritated they missed the deadlines.)

Just got a call from Albany Psychology Internship Consortium. The interviews are the week of January 10th. They offer morning or afternoon interviews. Yay!

seems like a lot of ppl haven't heard from jesse brown va either (a classmate of mine is in the same situation). as for when to contact sites, do it after their date of notification. if their date is 12/15, and you should be able to do it on 12/15 or after. calling may get you a faster response!

Just called and left a vm...We'll see if he calls/emails back! I literally just woke up, checked my email and called. Hopefully I didn't sound too froggy on the phone!

They say: "Applicants who are offered interviews will be called or e-mailed by Dec. 15. Applicants who are not invited for an interview will be notified by letter or e-mail. Please, do not call to check on your interview status; we will call you immediately if and when we determine that we will be interviewing you."

I am thus assuming I will not be receiving an invitation to interview. I do think it is a little heartless to not bother e-mailing rejections by the deadline, as they obviously must have notified anyone they're interviewing if they are following their own guidelines.

Alright y'all... we got what we got (for the most part), for some of us we are extremely happy, and for others (like myself) extremely disappointed and kind of heart broken and disillusioned with the field LOL (yes...I am sad). Time to start dealing with it!!! :-D!!!!!

I have a couple of questions for any of you that have gone through this before or know alot more than I do (because my training department seems to not know alot of answers either...lol)

FYI I have three interviews so far and one that I haven't heard from, but since they seem to only take counseling students (and I am a clinical student) it seems highly unlikely to happen.

1) Should we rank all the sites even if they did not mention they would be ranking all applicants? (the ones who reject you for an interview)
2) IF you end up being in the 2nd match, can you reapply to sites that you either didn't match at or get an interview at (if they have vacancies of course...and of course they will because they are missing me!!😍)
3) Should we start trying to get externships for next year NOW just in case?

Of course, if you have a billion interviews, this won't necessarily be relevant to you, and I know "you only need ONE site to match"...but just in case 🙂

thanks y'all!

I am still waiting on them also! So tired of waiting. That is the only one I haven't heard from. I did not realize they had made a lot of calls. I guess that means I should expect a rejection. I will probably call them this afternoon if I still haven't heard so I can know either way and be done. I really need to switch modes and prepare for the three interviews I do have. I am really bummed I only have 3.

I spoke too soon. I just got a rejection email from Maryland's CC. It looked like a mass, generic one. They were a long shot anyway since they've never taken a PsyD.

By the way, I'm really not a fan of the generic rejection emails that say "you were an impressive candidate, but..." After getting so many like that, I have a hard time believing them. 😡

They are also the only one I am waiting on. Maybe update the forum or pm me if you hear anything and I will do the same. Don't give up hope. Three interviews is still not bad at all! Best of luck to you.

My two cents:
1) I don't see the harm in it. Keep in mind it's unlikely you'll match this way (esp with sites that receive a large number of applications) but it certainly doesn't hurt anything to try, and if you do match, you'll be glad you did this. 🙂

2) My understanding is that you can apply to any site that is participating in Phase II. I wouldn't assume that you won't be considered for a site the second time around - usually it's a whole different ballgame by then and their criteria may change if they have vacant spots in Phase II.

3) That depends. My program doesn't start arranging externships until the summer, usually. If you find one now and end up matching, can you pull out of the externship?

This is my first time posting, though I am a long time reader. I've relied on this community for the past month and am looking forward to the interview process. Congrats to all and best of luck!

It has come to my attention that individuals are now paying professionals hundreds of dollars an hour to review their internship applications. Does this infuriate anyone else? I've certainly had supervisors and professors look over my materials for FREE - but how could this be allowed by the APA? This puts richer students at a huge advantage. Additionally, it is appalling to me that fellow psychologists would profit off of us - this process is already costing hundreds in applications fees, and will cost me close to one thousand in travel expenses. 😡

I feel that "packaging" students for profit is really unethical and unfair.

I think this is how the Memphis VA is operating too....:sigh:

Oh and ps - I finally got a rejection email from Houston VA (MEDVAMC) at 12:15AM last night (Eastern)

Thanks so much for replying! Our training department starts in January, they decide who we can apply to based on what everyone wants and what experiences we should be getting. I am sure I can pull out of the externship, lol...why not! 🙂

Has anyone received a rejection from James. H. Quillen VA (East Tennessee)? I know some people got interviews quite a while ago, but I haven't seen anyone get rejections. I'm sure it's a rejection at this point but they are the last ones I am waiting to hear from and it's pretty irritating. 😡

I think they have done a lot of their interviews already because I had mine last week and the dates offered to me were in mid-December. 🙁 Sorry! I am surprised they didn't notify you, though - they were really nice and seemed to care about the students. I know it is frustrating to not hear either way - I am in the same boat with a different site!!

Citrus Health Network is the only site I haven't heard from. I wish they l notify one way or the other because I need to reschedule one of my other interviews and I want to have all my other dates set before I do it.

I emailed Citrus Health this morning and I got they said that if you have not received an invite for an interview then you were not selected. 😡 Its super nice that they just leave people wondering.

Oops sorry! Guess they just decided to reject me earlier!

Thanks! Yes, I saw that they have interviews in mid-December and January. I figured they had started interviewing. I just want to be able to check everyone off my list. Good thing they weren't one of my top sites!

I just receive (an anticipated) rejection from Memphis VAMC. That wraps it all up for me. 6 interviews, 9 rejections. Now it's onward and upward.

Ha! Good to know. It wasn't one of my top choices (not keen on living in Florida), but you would think the application fee we paid would at least entitle us to be notified when we're rejected.

Still waiting on Sharp and St. Luke's. Ugh. Emailed them this morning and, really, I just want a definitive answer, even if it's no (which is what I am expecting anyway). So ready for this process to be over... Lol

Has anyone heard from the Ann Arbor VA? I know they don't interview people, but they are supposed to notify you if they are going to rank you.

Rejection from Purdue University CC. Although they were the first site to reject me but state they may still consider my application down the line. "We will hold onto your application in the event that we may want to reconsider your application. If you application does come up for reconsideration, you will be notified immediately." Oh well, still going to the rejection pile.

That was the last of my sites. 8 interviews (3 on site, 5 phone), 9 rejections. Already had 2 of my phone interviews, and have 1 tomorrow and Monday as well. Then a break until January for the rest. I will definitely be driving for site visits to a couple of my phone interview sites, and hope to schedule flights to visit the ones that are further away. As long as I can afford it.

Best of luck to everyone on hearing back from any remaining sites, and with your interviews!!
