2012-2013 Radiology Applicants Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have thoughts about calling programs that have sent out invites already to express interest in the program and check on the status of the application?

I emailed a program I am really interested in but did not get an interview from on Friday. I was pleased to find out that they had not even looked at my app yet. My third letter came in a few days after Sept 15 so that may have delayed me. Not sure if you are in the same boat but that may be a reason things seem slow for some folks right now. Hopefully anyway.

Yeah I think that this, in addition to first round or two of invites being only for in-house and rotating students, is a more likely possibility than many highly competitive applicants simply getting passed over in large scale invite rounds. For example, I was invited in technically the "third round" of invites at Michigan. However, when I viewed the video attached to their invites (which everyone previously invited must have viewed because it was the only way to see interview dates, how to go about scheduling, etc) it only had about a dozen views. This means that the entire first two "rounds" of invites had only combined to about a dozen offers at most. Obviously n=1 and there is bound to be significant variance in how programs organize their rounds of invites, but overall this is a good sign, imo.

Okay that makes me feel a lot better. It's tough to have a good gauge of who the people that are getting invites are, in terms of home institution, currently living in-state, etc. Anyway, here's to hopefully more offers for everyone next week!

have you guys updated programs with any new info? I sent an email about a research project i started and my CK score and 2-3 programs replied back saying that all updates must be done via ERAS.. but you can't update anything on your application like research once you submit, right?

Every applicant is going to get passed over by programs, top and otherwise. I got interviews at about 2/3 of the programs I applied to but that still ends up being ~15 rejections. You're going to get passed over, just don't worry about it, it'll all work out in the end.

it's not the quietness of the interview offers that bothers me as much as my obsession over constantly checking my email and not being able to focus on studying for step II

Just curious as to how everyone's doing so far on invites. I'm at 6 Rads and 4 TYs so far. Couple top choice rads programs which makes me happy but seem to have missed the first wave at a few other desired programs.

5 rads, 2 prelim. All came since last week. Feeling pretty good with 2 of the rads programs being my top choices.

Should I be worried if I have no interviews yet?

No, it won't do you any good to worry. A lot of places haven't started yet and the ones that have started may not be done.

7 rad, 5 prelim/ty here

Quiet week for me so far.... was sitting on 10 Rads interviews on Friday and haven't heard anything since.

I have to echo what others have said about the randomness of this process: I've gotten offers from top places 10+ hours away from home but skipped over by top named places literally an hour down the road.

EDIT: Has anyone gotten invites to Indiana or Virginia what weren't in some way connected to the program or instate?

I got an Indiana invite and have no connection to the program/state.

This cycle is odd to watch; interviews have come out much earlier than they've historically been offered.

If anyone has questions about programs feel free to PM me or ask, I interviewed at many/most of the top ones and have co-residents or classmates going into most of the rest.

Last week I had a steady stream and was sitting on 6 rads/3 TYs. This week I have not heard a peep!

Pretty frustrated right now...

Wow, I think you guys shouldn't be worried. I have 3 rads (all in-state) and 3 prelim and not too worried even though I've been passed up by 10 or so programs on the first wave(s). Still really early...

really depends where you apply and how many programs. All my offers have been from the midwest w/1 NY program.

you guys shouldn't worry.

sitting at 7 rads / 4 TY+ 3prelim

Been coming in waves. For 1 week, not a peep.. and I get 3 today.

No one who has 5 or more rads interviews already should be worried. Control your neuroticism, folks.

sigh.. 3 rads and 2 prelims so far...
and this is all from last week. not a peep since then... and a prelim program i was quite interested in has looked me over in the first round it seems.

lol what's the deal with random 11pm interview invitations? Got my first choice invite just now.

anyone know much about aurora/st lukes TY? its a drive for me so trying to figure out if I should go to interview.

It's a great TY; I wrote a review of it in the Cush TYs thread in the internship forum, might be the easiest TY in the country.

After UTSW, any other awesome programs in Texas?

After UTSW, any other awesome programs in Texas?

The two Baylor programs are pretty good: I'd put both behind SW and I wouldn't consider any of them top tier but SW is clinically a very good program and has good resources and promise for research with their new hires from BID.

Any opinions on Indiana univ TY program?

I've heard positive things about it. No real negatives. All the TY programs in Indiana seem to encourage pursuing your goals and having a good experience. I may be biased as one of the few people wanting to head back up there though.

Anybody receive confirmation from Northwestern? I replied to their invite right away Tuesday but haven't heard back, so now I'm just paranoid.

I wonder if NW will send out more invites or not. Kind of bummed not getting one from them. It was my top 5..oh well!

Exciting week. Up to 11 rads / 5 intern interviews. Good luck to everyone next week and hope things continue to ramp up.

I am up to 10 rads and 2 prelims. I am hoping I don't end up scrambling for a prelim surgery spot for the required intern yr. That would be a disaster.

Yeah, gonna go to all of my prelim med interviews as well as prelim/ty spots that offer combined interviews with rads to make sure this does not happen. I've been doing my 4th year surgery rotation this month and the prelim surg interns are worked like thai prostitutes.

4 radiology, 2 prelim interviews so far. Hopefully things will start to speed up.

I'm in the same boat as you, but I think we'll know a lot more in the next two weeks. By four weeks from now, we'll be good to go!

I think it's better than the IM one. The person I'd ask is DrBowtie, might want to PM him, I think he interviewed there.

Agreed. There is a long way to go.

I could have had 5 but I got teased by a program. 😡

Just wanted to commiserate with you because the same thing happened to me! So ridiculous. 🙁 ... I was pretty upset after the slow week I had on the Rads front = no new interviews. I did get a couple prelim/transitional year interviews at least.

4 Rads and 5 TY/Prelim

I hope things pick up for us over the next couple of weeks! :luck::luck:

How many interviews should we shoot for? Any rule of thumb on this?

Probably depends on the person and how competitive they are. My goal is somewhere in the 15-20 range

So, call me paranoid or obsessive, but I was checking the document tracker earlier and noticed that there are a handful of programs that did not re-download my USMLE transcript after it was updated this past wednesday. 2 of them happened to be places i was rejected from. Couple others that I've missed out on the first 2 waves. I'm assuming the others that didn't re-download are places that aren't planning on inviting me for an interview. Oh well. I'm happy where i'm sitting now and I'm feeling a big week next week for all of us

holy spirit of the whomever you believe!, I was hoping for a measly 10. You take the award on being over-accomplished my friend. 👍

Based on the NRMP charting outcomes once you get in the 8 or 9 range you are almost guaranteed to match. From what I understand 80% of applicants match in their top 3 ranks. Not sure if this holds true for more competitive programs.
