2012-2013 Radiology Applicants Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had a quick question regarding Step 2. My step 1 is in 250s, and I am targeting for a Radiology residency in Midwest. What should be your strategy in terms of taking Step 2 and releasing your score? This is specifically for radiology programs in Midwest. Any help would be appreciated!

Take it late enough you don't need to release it.

Can only hurt you if you're already 250+.

What if you're mid-230's step 1, and you already got offered an interview to your top choice program? I'm taking step 2 next week, and although I'm gonna give it my all either ways, I'm wondering how much I should be worried if I end up getting "the same" score on step 2 as I did on step 1, or do even worse?

Looks like this past week things started to slow down. You guys think this next week we'll see most of the second/third wave of interview invites? I figure most programs would want to have their schedules set by early November, especially with the early deans letter.

I've got 12 rads invites, but only 7-8 of them I'd actually would want to go to...

things have slowed down for me too but several of the programs i applied to still haven't given out any interviews yet (?assuming people are updating the interview thread)... none of the big nyc programs like nyu, cornell, columbia are on the list. also waiting to hear from gw & georgetown.

Why would you apply to programs you don't want to go to?

At this time I have more prelim medicine rejections than radiology rejections. And I just got rejected from a prelim for a program that offered me a radiology interview.

Interesting...Is it just me, or are these prelims unusually tough to get into compared to radiology?

are categorical IM interviews typically given out before prelim IM interviews? i've only gotten 2 so far...

Why would you apply to programs you don't want to go to?

I assume for the same reason a man would drink his own urine. If he were stranded in a hot desert and the only alternative was to SOAP to death.

finally got my 4th rads interview after weeks of silence!!

I didn't apply to programs I wouldn't go to but I applied to ones that I would cancel the interview for other places. There were a couple that my major reason for applying was the proximity to family and what not and figured they would be easy/ cheap ones to go to. The worst that happens is I leave ambivalent and the best is being pleasantly surprised.

When do MSPEs go out this year?

You should expect all mediocre programs to have sent out invites by then, with mainly top programs waiting until afterwards.

Weird, so you guys submit later but that goes out earlier?
ya, it has made it near impossible to compare this year to last year. invites have come out much earlier and a lot of places already seem to have invited all they want to invite

Once the Harvard and UC programs have started handing out invites, consider the season over for the rest.

Last year they held out until almost Thanksgiving, but it sounds like it will end sooner this year.

Brigham was 12/1 last year. My latest interview offer last year was UCI and it was in late dec (12/23)

Just canceled 3 interviews. It certainly feels good to be on the other end of the gun, lol.

What's the rule on thank you e-mails? Do they really matter? Especially for TY/Prelims?

How did you guys prepare for interviews (former applicants)?
Is there some giant SDN thread: both for prelim/TY and rads interviews? Common questions etc..
I haven't bought a book yet or really started preparing for them.

Just know your app cold and know why you want to go to each program.

How many interviews does one have at a specific institution? Generally 2? Does the PD interview a select few people or does he/she stay out of interviews?

I think this ranges from 2 to 4. PD is almost always one of the interviewers. Chief residents also interview often.

I would say more. In my experience more like 4-8. The least interviewers I had anywhere were 4 (Mayo, UCI)

Seriously? Most I had was 5. Mean was probably 3. Sample size 22.

Yeah, Penn, Emory (research), and a bunch of other places had a ton of interviewers. I think my average was more like 5. All the CA places had a lot of interviewers except UCI. I think UCD had 5.

If you were applying to research tracks that's a completely different beast.

Of course that bought you an extra two interviews on average.

Penn's interview day is the same regardless of track. The only programs w/ different interview days were UCLA and Emory.

community program, tier 2 or so, 3 interviews --> PD, chief resident, and faculty member.
just know your app, be able to answer "so tell me about yourself" and "why radiology" and youll be fine i think

Yeah, I went on my home institution's interview, and we had 4: PD, 2 faculty (some people got the assosciate PD as one of theirs), and a chief resident. They weren't that long, and everyone I talked to said theirs were really laidback--just basically talking, chatting, getting to know you.

Interesting in that during my interview with the PD, he mentioned that he thought that at only about half the places would you interview with the PD and that many would just have an info session with him/her and that's it. I wasn't sure what to make of that (if anything). On one hand, I can see his point that it gives a message about a program and its relationship with the residents, but I can also see that programs are just super busy and that it might not be possible, especially on a day where a lot of people are interviewing. Anyone have any input?

What percentage of the programs you all applied to have already sent out at least a wave of invites? 80-85% for me. Seems like it might be over before it even really started for some people last year.

80% for me (30 of 38). Waiting on three California schools, both DC programs, NYU, MGH, UIllinois-Chicago.

Seems that way. With the MSPE coming out Oct 1 the timeline looks to have moved up quite a bit.

Anyone get a confirmation yet after scheduling a Yale interview? Sent mine back like an hour after getting the invite last week and haven't heard anything.

Same here, I just got an automated response

What does it really mean when a program says that your application is "on hold"? Does this mean that I should be hopeful for an invite?

Does anyone know how well UCLA-harbor program compares to UCLA - main?
Do they train well and are they well-known? Are they in tier 2?

I figured. Elaborate a bit more. Worse than Santa Clara or UCSB? Is it a community program? It seems that way.

Harbor is one of the worst programs in the country. I'd consider it if you have no other way to become a radiologist. It's somewhat competitive because of location and ignorance.

That's a good confirmation. I mean a county hospital in LA has got to be one of the worst in the nation.

Well USC is a pretty good program and their main affiliate is LAC; it's just the actual program that isn't good. Certainly below kaiser, cedars, etc. it's probably comparable to bad comm programs in NYC like Harlem hospital and Staten Island.
