I probably should have posted this earlier but i'm currently a first year at buffalo so if anyone has any questions about the school, ask away and i'll try to answer them.

Good luck.

How do most students find roommates before first year? Through a fb group, second look, etc? Do many students live alone?

Usually through the facebook group. The school puts on a housing weekend where people come to buffalo and housing companies make presentations. People sometimes find roommates that way. A good number live alone as well.

Thanks for the info!
Is the housing weekend in addition to a second look weekend or one in the same?
Finally, do you recall at all when fin aid packages are released?

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. Why did you choose buffalo? How do you feel about the grading system? Is there anything distinct about the atmosphere or student body at UB that you particularly like or dislike?

Are we supposed to email Dr. Rosso tomorrow to find out our waitlist ranks? Or will this info be on the application status website?

I think tomorrow at some point when we check our status page it should say in which third we fall, not sure if you can email Dr. Rosso for a more specific wait-list rank although that would be better. This is what I remember hearing so if someone heard otherwise please correct me.

I can confirm that it's available on the status page. I am showing up as middle third as of this posting.

does anyone know how many people get waitlisted?

Upper third, but I'll be withdrawing.

How come if you don't mind me asking? something about the school or simply holding another acceptance. Regardless it helps me out I got Bottom Third so I could use all the help I can get. Good luck!

Bottom third. Not sure if it helps anyone, but I'll be withdrawing. (I liked the school, but my chances are slim here and I have an acceptance elsewhere).

Best of luck guys!!!!

I think the school is fine really (and seems like a bargain for new york residents). I have other options though that probably fit me better. Buffalo has a great deal of waitlist movement and I think they've pulled people from the bottom third in past years so I definitely wouldn't lose hope if I were you. Good luck! :luck:

bottom third...really disappointing since this is my top choice.

is there any chance of people who have been complete since early july to still get an II to buffalo?

Current Status WAIT LIST - BOTTOM THIRD

Hilarious.

Does anyone know if the wait-list is fluid throughout the year or does it not start moving till May 15th?

From looking at last years wait-list thread it looks as movement started occurring in bits at the end of March, then picked up in May.

yah, you can get an get an interview at any time and it doesn't affect your chances of getting in, I interviewed in early march last year. And the waitlist moves a lot but you'll see that more when the waitlist thread comes out. I was in middle third and got picked up sometime late may.

Is anyone who is interviewing at Buffalo tomorrow staying at the Courtyard Marriott tonight? Figured it couldn't hurt to ask, lol.

I'm staying at some motel right on campus (University Inn I believe). Nothing special, but conveniently located.

Yea that definitely sounds convenient, maybe I should have done that. Let's hope my shuttle to the school tomorrow morning runs on time, haha

FIrst interview on First possible day with Dr. Severin. I thought it went well but got placed in the bottom third but am withdrawing. Oh well. Good luck to everyone else on the wait list I hear there is a lot of movement.

lol you were on my interview day!

Yes I was. As long ago as it was, I think I remember you haha! I know of three others who interviewed that day that were all waitlisted.

I hope the cycle is treating you well.

Hey, I think I remember talking to you that day. I also thought I had a good interview with Dr. Severin, and I was placed in the bottom third.

Has anyone heard of people moving down from the tier they are originally informed they are on? I know the waitlist isn't finalized until after the interviewing season but from the past it seems as though people tend to move up, not down. Just wondering if anyone knows of people moving down from their original third.

I just want to make sure I understand, are you saying that their is potential to move up and down on the wait list during the interview season? I am currently in the bottom third, if enough people withdrew could I move up to the middle third within the next few weeks, or would my status remain in the bottom third and I wouldn't be moved up till interview season is over?

Thanks for the clarification, I am trying to get an idea of how the wait-list works. You figure that by being on 4 wait-lists I would have an idea by now, but nope. WLs are just torturous haha.

I'm fairly certain that you aren't going to move down. I think that as people who are no longer interested in attending Buffalo pull from the wait list, then people below them on the list move up to fill their place!

Recent interviewees are being added to the list, too. It seems like your absolute position on the list may change but your relative position will remain fairly constant.

It is my understanding that you can move up and down the waitlist during the interview season. Looking from past threads it seems like people have only moved up from the tier they were originally on. My guess is that while your absolute position on the waitlist my change your relative position won't move that much and if it does, hopefully it will only be up!

The reason I think people only move up is that more people are withdrawing from the wait list than there are left to interview. I mean, look how many people on the WL have already said they are withdrawing.

I think it is possible to move down. As more "bottom third" applicants withdraw, "middle third" applicants now fall under the "bottom third" category. This is just a technicality but relative position shouldn't change unless they are constantly rereviewing waitlisters (very possible)

Thanks! I just wanted to know if I should keep checking my status page everyday or not in hopes of moving up.

is there any chance of people who have been complete since early july to still get an II to buffalo?

Hi, I was accepted last year (2012), but deferred to this year. I was complete in July/August 2011, but didn't get an interview invitation until March 2012!!! So I think that there is hope!

Anyone have the link for the facebook group (if it exists)? I tried searching for it but no dice.

Dr Severin said it is possible to move up or down because each interview class has the possibility of being placed in front of you, although I agree this is less likely to occur due to the volume of people withdrawing.

Later I think I'll write up a detailed thoughts on the school/interview day. Overall I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, the real prize here is the administration and student body. The faculty, deans, and staff that I met were down to earth, realistic, and didn't play mind games. For the flagship university of the state I was a little surprised by certain aspects of the facilities (e.g. shared anatomy lab with extremely limited access, the only med school I've interviewed at without digital scans of the cadaver on screens alongside), and they did the curriculum presentations on overhead projector which I have to admit made several student look at each other confused (at least they did a presentation, SB just gave a curriculum hand out)-several of us thought it was a joke at first, but I was pleasantly surprised at others (clinical skills), the students love the lectures and they are highly attended (more so than any of the other schools I saw) . The school also has outstanding sim labs, but that matters more for residents than students from what I've been told.

Overall, except for a few unusual aspects of the interview day, I'm fairly optimistic about the future of UB.
