More movement today. They have accepted the top 4 waitlisters.

Yep. Hopefully that is a good sign the the waitlist will move quickly. I wasn't expecting much movement before May 15th.

That's how I was waiting for my acceptance status last month haha, surprised I didn't wear out my F5 key 😀. This time around I'm not checking as much, bought a bunch of games on steam and from the humble bundles to keep myself distracted.

Same! I know they wont get to me until (hopefully) May or June but every person accepted now is one less ahead of me come May 15th.....I wonder how much early movement is normal?

Not as much movement this week as there was last 🙁

Hopefully we will start seeing large jumps soon :xf:

No kidding....I wish we knew how much movement was normal before the 15th.

Hello to all,

I am a UNM SOM grad, current PGY-2 in FM, and a wait list alumni. I feel for everyone waiting to hear about waitlist movement (the only good thing about Mondays). Let me assure you, even if there isn't much movement this year, if you are on the wait list you will be high on their accept list next year. And UNM SOM is worth the wait. I look at my fellow residents and their debt burden, and since I went to the University of No Money, I got an awesome eduation as well as a great deal $60K for all 4 years compared to people who are paying $60K per year or more!

Also, while this seems to have no bearing on current waitlist movement there has been an old rumor left over from UNM deans of the past that would be good for next year's thread: the rule of 12. Number of application attempts X years in the state has to equal at least 12 for you to get in. The dean who created this rule was long retired when I was there but it applied to me, and I got in off the waitlist on my 3rd attempt. I have no idea if they are still using this arbitrary rule.

Best of luck to all :luck:

Here comes another day of hitting F5 repeatedly for the next 45 minutes.....

Looks like they forgot to update till today. At least the list moved up this week, even if it was only 1 spot again.

Haha figures they would forget...just one more way to torture us...oh well one more down!

Just fyi fellow waitlisters, if you look at the bottom of the waitlist page, you can see the last time/date they last updated the page. Helps you know whether there has been an update posted this week 🙂

Dude sweet! Didnt even realize....looks like they havent updated yet this week.

Hey fellow waitlisters, I went to the post application workshop last week (just in case) and they gave some pretty interesting information. They have access to which students have multiple offers at other schools. As of last Monday there were still 16 students who hadn't made up their mind about UNM because they had multiple offers. So hopefully they all decide to go elsewhere and their spots open up for us. Also those 16 don't include people who defer for a year or people who drop (their spots open for us too). I hope this is a tiny bit of good information for some of us! 🙂

Also, one more thing:

In 2012 they accepted Alternates 1-24
In 2011 they accepted Alternates 1-19
In 2010 they accepted Alternates 1-23
In 2009 they accepted Alternates 1-19

Hhmmm does that 16 also include people who are waitlisted elsewhere? Or just people who have multiple acceptances?

I don't think they have access to where people are waitlisted. Only accepted

Well that helps. I dont really think all 16 will drop. That seems highly improbable....

We can only hope... my biggest question is if you are closer to the #15 spot on the wait list, will you actually find out around May 15th or are you one of the ones who has to wait into June??? Is it that only 1 gets accepted in June, and everyone else is in May? Or is it that 5 are accepted in June? I don't know where to get those stats.

To add to this... they also have access to info about where the UNM Alternates are accepted elsewhere. So it is possible that some of the top 20 alternates at UNM are accepted into other schools and will decline as UNM finally accepts them. So the number of alternates in front of us could be shorter as well, but we wont find out till later.

Im closer to the 20 spot. So only 1 person gets accepted in June?

Edit- I think I see what you are saying. Are you talking about trends in acceptances after may 15th? It would be good to know this data. It sure would be great if those 16 would decline cause I would be in and know really soon. However, I just dont see getting an acceptance (if I get one) until mid june.

Yes, sorry. I just want to know the percentage of total people accepted in May and the percentage in June. When I should expect to find out if I am in? But nobody can help that. Haha. I don't want to have so much anxiety any more even though its very likely I am in.

Im right there with you. I'm top 20 and basing that off the last 4 years of waitlist movement I should be ok but you never know. The waiting is killing me....

July 8th :scared:

Although I wrote an LOI to Rush, so maybe, somehow they will pull me from the wait-list. But I'm far from counting on that happening

You never know. Lets hope for UNM. Its you then me!

any reason why you're not counting on happening? I'm also waitlisted, so just wondering.

any reason why you think you won't get of the Rush waitlist? I too am waitlisted.

Rush doesn't seem to pull too many off the waitlist. If I remember correctly, Jill said at the interview day that sometimes its as low as 2 and as high as 15.

I think to get off the WL at Rush you need to be pretty high on it, I'm not convinced that I am high haha

But I have no idea how Rush even does their WL. It's not ranked as far as I know, so I have no idea how to even gauge my chances

There is a summer course being offered at UNM for students interested in learning more about the social determinants of health. The course is called "Understanding Health Disparities in New Mexico" and is a 1 credit seminar course CRN: 22865. (The course is listed under "Research in Biomedical Sciences 410, so make sure to use the CRN to get the right course). The class meets Thursdays from 4-5:50 from June 6-July 25, and grades are based on attendance and a final 2 pg paper. This might be helpful for any of you who are applying or reapplying to UNM!

I basically found and answer to my question. I looked back at previous studentdoctor.net threads about UNM Alternates list and found that in 2007 (which is a long time ago) they had had 10 accepted before May 15th off the waitlist. Then they accepted 10 more students on/before May 17th off the waitlist (=20). On the 22 of May they reached number 21, and on the 29th of May they reached number 22 that year.

So i think it is safe to say that we may get another 8 - 10 accepted on or just after May 15th! 🙂 :luck:

I have a daughter who is thinking about applying for the BA/MD program at UNM in the near future. I would greatly appreciate it if you all would post your stats so we can have some idea of how to proceed. By the way, congrats to all that made it and wishing a whole bunch of luck to those that are on the waiting list. Thanks in advance!

Considering most, if not all, of the people in this thread are traditional entry students not through the BA/MD; I don't think stats from us will help you that much.

I do not know too much about the BA/MD program, but I know it is competitive. I had friends who were in it, and they seemed to think getting admitted to it is less about stats and more about meeting the needs that New Mexico has (desire to go into primary care, etc...). Although stats were definitely important, I don't think that stats guarantee admission to the program in any way.

All of my friends who were in the BA/MD program came from areas outside of ABQ and Santa Fe. They tended to be good students (3.7ish) to Valedictorian (from a small NM town though). As previously stated, the two most important things for this program are being able to show a commitment to New Mexico and convince the program that you have the drive and determination to make it through the 4 years of college, then medical school, then residency, and will then still maintain the desire to practice in NM.

With all this said, this isn't the best place to find information on the BA/MD program, being that most everyone who frequents this thread is not in the program (or like in my case, never heard of it before reaching college).

I would contact them at [email protected] or visit their website at http://hsc.unm.edu/som/combinedbamd/. I'm sure if you gave them a call or short email they would be happy to respond. If that is uncomfortable you can always try to contact a student adviser at your daughters high school and ask if they know of any students that got accepted and their general stats. With that said, the BA/MD is a great option and if she is truly interested in going to medical school at UNM and staying in the state I would encourage her to apply, it is one of the best programs at UNM for those students lucky enough to be in it.

Best of luck to your daughter and yourself. If you have other questions about premed at UNM feel free to send me a message.

Thank you so much for your guidance. We will look into it. @Faol, I will definitely contact you in the future if I have further questions.🙂
