Just to be clear, I submitted by secondary on 7/20. I got the application arrived email on 7/23. Should I be expecting an application complete email as well?

First invite! I guess I'll be seeing some of you on the 18th!

Interview on the 18th! Anyone interested in sharing a hotel room at the Cambria Suites so we can split the cost? It's the only hotel within walking distance of the medical school building. PM me

I received the e-mail that starts:

Greetings from VTCSOM:

Your online Secondary Application for the 2013 entering class has arrived at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and we are checking to see if we have also received your standard letters of recommendation via AMCAS letters.

And then I received the interview invitation e-mail. I don't think there is another complete e-mail that you should be waiting for.

Just passed the secondary "screen" and received it today. Hoping to turn it in by the end of the week. Congrats to all that have already gotten an interview!

anyone know if carilion has a gym?

So I did not read the recommendation letters requirement beforehand. Secondary says 5 to 7 letters are a sufficient number to send? I only have 3. Are they lenient or should I forget about this secondary?

Edit: Never mind, their website states that a minimum of 3 is required.

anyone know if carilion has a gym?

http://www.carilionfitness.com/

there are 2 primary clubs and 1 or 2 express clubs available. i know my class got free memberships for all 4 years and I am pretty sure the other classes are getting memberships as well, but you may wish to double check as i am not completely sure on that. essentially, these are the clubs carilion has opened up for their faculty and staff as well as members of the community. the gyms are nice, clean, and have just about anything you could be looking for (free weights, hardware, pools, indoor tracks, racquet ball, basketball, juice bars, etc).

hope this helps!

also forgot to mention... on the second floor of the medical school has a very small gym which the students have access to as well. it has a fitness bike, 2 treadmills and a stair-climber from what i recall. the whole gym has direct access to the showers and locker rooms.

also would like to point out, Roanoke has been constructing a series of greenways all throughout roanoke for pedestrian use. the ones that go by the medical school and carilion memorial hospital have some very scenic paths along the roanoke river and are great for riding, running, or just walking along. some of the med students are also involved in local IM leagues (softball, soccer, and rugby in particular). we also have several students who thoroughly enjoy road and off road riding, trail running, and rock climbing (apparently the city is getting a new climbing gym sometime in the near future).

finally, i just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the city of roanoke... in my view, it is a sampler city... one of everything. if you are interested in something in particular, chances are there is at least a small niche in town willing to cater to it. however, it is a small city, so it can be easy to be disappointed in the selection if you are coming from a larger city center such as Chicago or New York.

Does anyone know what time the reception on Friday is being held at?

I'm very excited to interview here this Saturday. Does anyone know what the dress code is for the reception Friday? I was planning on wearing dress pants and a button down shirt. No tie.

This sounds like the male equivalent of what I was planning on wearing as well.

I'm thinking along the same lines, though probably game time decision on the tie.

Anyone interested in grabbing a drink (or root beer for any young bucks) or hanging out after the reception? I figure an hour or two with some fellow applicants is a better way to relax than stressing in a hotel room.

Reply or PM me if you're interested

thanks for that. i also saw that there was a planet fitness near by too, so all is well in the gym department. good to know that there are people who do trail/outdoor running too.

as for the reception, i am also wearing slacks and a dress shirt. no tie though. and i am down to socialize afterwards with fellow applicants and to get to know more peoples.

Is the secondary screening based on just mcat/gpa or does receiving one also mean your ps and ec s are also "acceptable"?

is it too late to submit a primary? the more i'm learning about this school the more i really like it. but i don't want to submit if i'm gonna be at a big disadvantage right now, since the class is so small and interviews have started.

i believe it's everything you've mentioned. on their website, they say that they send out secondaries to everyone who meets their minimum requirements.

are you already verified in AMCAS? you are certainly not late. whether you are early is subjective for august. i think if you really like the school, you have good stats, and 50 dollars, you should definitely try.

Has anyone interviewed MMI style before? Any tips/insight/reflections would be great!

Haha +1 gosh I'm spinning through different scenarios and thinking along those lines but no clue If I'm doing a good job.

What kind of students are they looking for? Do I need to have stellar stats, or have done a lot of research? I'm a 3.7/34

Current student here. The dress code for the reception Friday is pretty business casual, as you have suggested. However, if you make a habit of overdressing you'll never be called out for underdressing. That being said, no need to wear a suit or anything. The Friday night reception is really nice and hopefully it will allow you relax a bit before the busy day to come. No one should stress out about it, though!

On a side note, the gyms we get access to are great. Roanoke Fitness Club has multiple facilities that we enjoy. The large one is about 10 min from school, contains an indoor pool, outdoor pool, soaking spa, multiple basketball courts, multiple racquetball courts, and an extensive selection of weights.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions about VTCSoM/Roanoke

Wow, awesome interview. Everyone was really helpful and friendly. The MMI was totally stress free. Also, for those of you who are out of state, they mentioned that most of the people there were either in state or pretty close because it was such short notice, so no need to freak out if you missed the first round.

Thank you! You just made my day 🙂

Sooo.... I got the secondary for VTC on July 30th. It's the last secondary I have to submit, but I just... haven't.... written it. Would it look really bad if I did submit it, like, this week, or have I let it gone unsubmitted for too long to be considered seriously? :eyebrow:

Interview invite for 9/29! Anyone else?

Interview invite for 9/29! Anyone else?

Congrats and +1 for the interview invite!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be there on 9/29 too, see ya there.

I got the email about an hour ago and my app was complete around 8/7 or maybe a little after. Stats ~3.6/32.

Cant wait!

II for 9/29 as well. Was complete 1st week of August. OOS, >3.6, >30.

Does anyone have the numbers on how many they interview, accept, and matriculate?

This is the info we got at interview day: out of ~3200 secondaries they receive, they interview about 320. From there, they are trying to fill a class of 42 but they realize that since their school is relatively new, a lot of people will forgo their acceptance to accept offers at other schools so they will offer quite a bit more acceptances than seats. They also said that about half of their incoming class came off of the waitlist. So my guess is that about 150 or so will eventually get acceptances.

Hey guys, I am unable to upload my secondary essay. I typed it in Word and am using Internet Explorer. Any suggestions before I call them tomorrow morning?

So regarding this reception the night before the interviews...is this mandatory? Because I'm planning my travel now and it looks like I'm not going to be in town until around 11PM.

Several people didn't attend the reception at my interview day. It is just a meet-and-greet and an opportunity to chat with current med students who can speak to attending vtc. It was a nice experience but don't beat yourself up if you can't make it.

It was a great way to meet current students, but you will also have to opportunity to talk with students at lunch. They don't take attendance at the meet and greet so it is unlikely that anyone will know you aren't there.

You will not hurt your chances of admission at all by not attending. It's a nice gathering but it is solely for your benefit and perhaps to calm some nerves. I enjoyed talking to current students when I went and I learned a lot of "inside info" about Roanoke/VTC but I don't know if I would spend extra money on a ticket to arrive earlier or to change plans.

Anyone with a cum or sci GPA below 3.4 get an interview invite? If so what strengths did you present?

yes. average MCAT, steep research background, and early application.

I got my secondary request from V-tech in July, but forgot about it until now! Do you think it's still too late to send in the secondary?

Edit: Well, I just finished and submitted it. It took less than an hour; should have done it weeks ago. 🙁
