WOOOO!! Just got the Interview Today!! Who else is going to roanoke january 12th??

Sure thing..3.6 cgpa 30Q mcat (11P 10B 9VR) 1500 hours work experience in organic chemistry (500 in pharmaceutical research) (1000 in tutoring) 2 publications, 100 hours clinical volunteer, confirmed secondary + LORs at VTC on 10/17

My academic stats are eerily similar to you.

But then I read everything that followed and lost hope. Grats!

Did you list your hours out on your application? Or did you just estimate with hours per week and timeframe?

I estimated using hours per week X weeks worked but just made sure to make it clear that I chose research instead of retaking MCAT, since they are a research-heavy institution and all. Don't lose hope, especially in the big picture because you should be competitive at many MD schools with those stats...

oh the interview is on jan 12? looks like they will finish the jan interviews too before decisions. the wait is getting longer (yet closer).

they said back in the beginning of the season that first batch will be mid jan. be sure to report back after ur interview!

I just read VTechs sample MMI scenarios and the critical thinking station seems pretty intense...How would you suggest preparing for effectively facilitating a fruitful discussion in what could very well be a very complicated issue?

There is not much preparation you can do, it's also not something you are really meant to "prepare" for, per se. I think a key is not to come across as a zealot. Take a stance about whatever is presented in front of you but acknowledge other opinions etc etc. Be yourself, get a good nights rest, and you'll probably be in for some good conversation!

Does anyone know when the first decisions are going to be sent out?

Does anyone know when the first decisions are going to be sent out?

At my interview, they said the first decision date will be in mid-January (about 50 acceptances), another in March (about 20-30 accepts), and then they'll form a waitlist April-ish. Unless you get rejected post-interview (I'm not even sure if they do that), everyone who interviewed is in an "active-status" pool until they are accepted or waitlisted. No idea when or if they'll have any movement on the waitlist, but if they do it will probably be around May 15th like other schools when applicants can only hold on to 1 acceptance. It's a long, drawn out and crappy process for applicants in my opinion, but their class size is only 42 so I can understand why they want to consider a lot of applicants before releasing any acceptances. It is what it is. Hope that helps.

Do you guys think we have a chance of hearing back this week? Or are we going to have to wait until the 15th?

This school is my absolute top choice. I haven't had much good luck so far in the cycle, and know I shouldn't expect too much.

At the interview they said they would email everyone to say that they are getting ready to send out acceptances a week in advance. We may get that email this week or next week.

This school is definitely my top choice as well, but looking at how well my previous interviews went, this one is not looking likely to be a good result. Good luck to you!

Good to know. I must have missed that part.

On pure speculation: the Jan. interview is this coming Saturday. Then they would meet and decide, so I think it's safe to assume we won't get that e-mail until next week and then the first batch of acceptances more towards the end of January. Of course this Saturday's interviewees will receive the most up-to-date information, so hopefully one can fill us in later!

Hi!

Is anyone else interviewing this Saturday?

Also, I've never done an MMI before and am really nervous. I have no idea how to prepare for it besides thinking about ethical things. 🙂 Does anyone have any thoughts/advice?

Thanks!

I am interviewing on Saturday! I have just been practicing questions I found online with the time limit given. It might help to discuss your thoughts for each question with friends, family, etc. I don't think you can have a wrong answer as long as you explain your reasoning well. From what I have read, they care more about your ability to reason and communicate well.

Thanks! That's basically what I've been doing/what I'm planning on doing. I've thought through a couple, but I haven't done it out loud yet. I'm sure I'll be fine. But is it just me, or does 8 minutes seem like a long time for some of the questions? Maybe it's not if I'm verbalizing every thought process. I don't know. Thanks again for your thoughts! I look forward to meeting you on Saturday. 🙂

Some of the questions can probably be answered in less than 8 minutes, but they probably also have probe questions to keep the conversation headed in the direction they want (at least that is the information I gathered from some articles I read regarding the MMI process). As long as you make a good argument within the eight minutes, it should be okay. Better to be a minute short, than run over and not finish a thought!

I look forward to meeting you as well!! Hope you have safe travels! 🙂

My best piece of advice: remember that there are always two sides to a situation... ALWAYS. If the 'answer' to a situation seems obvious at first, step back and think about how it could possibly be more complicated than that. Express to your interviewer that you understand both sides of the issue, and if you have to pick 'a side', ultimately support the action that puts compassion/the patient first/allows you to preserve your integrity.

I practiced by doing mock situations with others. When the interview came around, I was pretty excited about it, actually. Besides following the above rule, just remember to be yourself, be genuine, be personable, and have fun with it!

Thank you all for your advice! That's just about what I was thinking, but it makes me less nervous that others are thinking that as well. 🙂

Off to finish packing before leaving tomorrow morning!

Speaking of packing, is the reception tomorrow night business casual? Did it specify in the email somewhere?

The most important thing to do is relax. They are not trying to trick you. Just remember to relax and think clearly.

For those of you who have been waiting for decisions, I just called admissions and found out that first decisions will be released at the end of January, not middle January. So don't expect an email too soon.

I was so looking forward to interviewing here tomorrow, but then United cancelled my flight into roanoke because of fog around the Roanoke airport. Rescheduling for February

Hi everyone! I was at the interview this past Saturday, so I have some updated info for earlier interview groups:

They will be sending out roughly 50 acceptances near the end of January (normally takes 100 to fill a class). This will not include January interviewees because they will be unable to review us in time.

Then they will send out the rest of the acceptances needed to fill the class in late march. If you are not accepted in January, you could still be accepted in march depending on how your scores compare to the new interviewees.

Feel free to correct this info! This is what I understood

Thanks for the info! By any chance did you get to talk to any MS3 students during your interview to see how their rotations are going, their experiences, how they schedule them, etc.? I interviewed earlier in the fall and we only had MS1 students to talk to during lunch and they couldn't really answer any questions about clinicals.

Thanks for sharing, didn't know the January invites would not be considered for the first acceptances. The only thing I didn't know was that it takes 100 to fill a class. I was under the impression it takes ~80 or so.

We did have some M3 students and they raved about their experiences. They have loved their rotations thus far and have the opportunity to do rotations elsewhere in their 4th year. For example, they just set up an international rotation in Uganda. Seems like a great opportunity.

They said in the past it took around 100 acceptances. Could be more or less. It just depends on how many people they accept decide to go to a different medical school! Lets hope for 100!

thanks for the updated info! the one-week-prior e-mail just went out. first batch is aug, sept, oct, and nov it seems. good luck!

interesting. not sure when you interviewed, but all the MS3's who I had talked to also raved about their first rotations. what you have to realize is that although VTC is a new medical school, the carilion clinic has been around for a while. they have been training medical school students from other schools, so it's a solid program.

Yeah I realize that, plus carilion has standing residency programs in all of the core clinical rotation areas so I'm not really worried about the quality of the clinical education here, I think it is solid. I just didn't have the chance at my interview to talk to any MS3s to hear about their firsthand experiences or ask logistical questions like if they have any input on choosing the order of rotations or if it is a lottery, or if there have been any bumps in the road, etc.

In other news, VTC just sent an email out saying the adcom is voting on acceptances this week and will start making calls on the 22nd!

I have a small heart attack.

My heart is literally pounding when I click on the email, regardless of whether or not it is relevant to my application.

and now begins the longest week ever!

Hey so the AdCom said they would start making calls on Jan 22nd. Does that mean they aren't going to make all their calls that day?

I think most calls will go out on the designated day, but some will go out on the other days of the week.

my last chance for an acceptance this cycle...good luck everybody

Any fellow pre-interview post-secondary folk on this thread get any word from these guys recently?
