I'm glad I just got that complete email two months after submitting my secondary. I submitted July 10.

i JUST got a complete email...weird considering my "arrived" email was on 7/23. haha. I could have sworn I was complete already...guess now the waiting begins?

Same, I thought I was complete a month ago...

Same, except I submitted 7/31. These days when I see an "Application complete" email, I'm ready for a rejection. Hopefully this means something good...

I thought it was a pre-rejection email as well until I saw everyone else who got it posting. So far you all seem like VTC material. High MCATs are well represented. Maybe this is a good thing.

For those of you interviewing this Saturday (9/29), have you received a follow-up email with more info since the initial invitation email?

Yeah, I just got a follow-up email yesterday evening. You probably got the email too after posting your question, but here's the email VTC sent for anyone else interested:

Dear VTC Interviewee:

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 29, for your interview with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Virginia.

We are hosting a reception for all interview invitees on Friday evening, September 28, at the Cambria Suites Hotel on Reserve Avenue near the Carilion Health Sciences Campus from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Members of the VTC faculty and students from the three VTC classes will be on hand to greet you. Dress code is business casual.

On Saturday morning, please plan to arrive by 7:50 a.m. at the Carilion Clinic Riverside 3 building at the corner of S. Jefferson Street and Reserve Avenue for check-in and orientation. Ample no-cost parking is provided in the parking lot on campus. Below are a few reminders:

how was the sept interviews? are they still not meeting until january?

I really loved this school (went for the interview yesterday). They have small class sizes, and I really felt that they cared for their students (perhaps I am just a sucker for good advertisement 🙂). I liked the case-based learning, and the fact that their average USMLE score was around 240 didn't hurt.

The MMI interview was good - I actually liked it better than the traditional interviews I've attended (it might help that I have a background in debate). I don't know how well I did, and I know most people thought they had one or two stations at which they didn't do as well.

The only bad part was that they don't give decisions until the middle of January- and they only accept around 50 people then. As they interview once a month, with about 44 people each time, you have a (50/220*100) % chance of acceptance then.

did they tell you 50? for some reason i remember 100 lol.

They told us on Saturday that about 50 acceptances will go out in mid-January, and another 25-30 will go out in late March.

oh okay. yah that's how i remembered like 100 (rounded up from 80). january is such a long time sigh.

I also interviewed this weekend and went in really not knowing what to expect, but I ended up loving the school. I wrote a huge review and put it on my mdapps for anyone interested.

good luck october invites!

Hey guys, I posted in What are my chances and I was thinking of adding VTCSOM. Do you think it's too late now? 30R cGPA 3.54 sGPA 3.63. Would I get an II? I know their range is 30-32.

carilion has no VA preference, if you look at their class distrib i believe it's almost 2/3 oos. they do favor research and i see that you have one semester. seeing how they already sent out october interview invites, you are probably looking at a dec invite at the earliest. this would still put you in the first poss. batch of acceptances.

ultimately, it's not late, but it's not early. your one semester of research is a bit weak. your numbers look okay. you won't know until you apply, so just get on it.

Hey guys, I'm a current M1 and since we basically have the week off(remediation week is yours if you pass your exams) I thought I'd check back inwith this site. There's been a lot of discussion on the site as a whole (notnecessarily here) about the use of PBL - patient based learning where you usemedical cases as part of the curriculum. I've spoken with friends at a fewother medical schools who do not like this part of their curriculum at all. It's not structured or set up well and they don't see this as a great use oftheir time.

I am extremely thankful I chose to come to VTC because this is my absolutefavorite part of the curriculum and this is something our school doesexceedingly well. Each week our case is directly relevant to what we arelearning. For example, our first block covered genetics and metabolism heavilyand many of our cases were genetic or metabolic disorders. We spend 2 hourseach Monday in a group of 7 going through the case; discussing possiblehypotheses, lab tests, and learning objectives for Wednesday. This is led by a faculty facilitator andstudents are allowed to look up or confirm “quick” answers on the internet, sothis is a very useful exercise. Complaintsat other schools are that there’s no direction or organization to this processand that is absolutely not the case here. We then each pick a learning objective and give a 20 min presentation/lessonon that objective to our team on Wednesday. Some of these learning objectives are reviewing lecture concepts; someare about various diseases, lab tests, etc. We spend 3 hours in PBL Wed giving our presentations and moving throughthe case. We repeat this process onFriday and then the best part is case wrap-up Friday before lunch. We get to meet the exact patient (or asimilar patient, but usually the same one) and ask questions in an informal discussion. I remember every patient and what diseaseeach had. Every disease we have coveredthus far is in my board review book – so the faculty obviously took that intoconsideration when putting together this curriculum.

This is not a school for students who never want to go to class or enhancetheir public speaking and presentation skills. I am the complete opposite of that, so I love this school. It’s not perfect, but the faculty iscommitted to actively receiving and applying student feedback and as Imentioned before, there is very little I would change about PBL. Please feel free to ask questions (they don’thave to solely be about PBL) and I will try my best to answer them as honestly and accurately as possible. Good luck in the application process!

How many people do they accept here? And is there IS preference?

The medical school is private, there is not an IS preference. They have a class of 42, and in order to fill it they typically offer about 80 acceptances. The first ~50 will be sent out in January.

Just called and withdrew my application. I was set to interview next Saturday. Good luck everyone still in the running and hopefully someone deserving gets my spot!

If you received the secondary, what are your chances of interviewing? Just submitted it today. This place looks amazing!!

they get about 4000-5000 applications. they interview about 400 people. so you have like about a 7-10% chance. good luck! this place is awesome.

I would love to get an interview here and would go here...
probably explains why i had a dream i was interviewing here.

Interview invite here via email about an hour ago for 12/1. Pretty excited, considering I hadn't heard from any school for about 2 weeks, and those were rejections.

My stats are: 3.56/3.57/39R IS.

edit: and I received the completed email on 9/17 like a ton of other people. I think I actually spurred that email because I called the office and inquired about a completion email, and it was out the next day.

+1! Submitted 9/27, Complete 10/31. II for 12/1 this morning! Stats range: 3.4-3.7/3.0-3.4/31-35Q OOS.

My first responses from schools were rejections too- I love you, VTCSOM!!!

+1 - Interview for 12/1. Submitted 9/26, complete 10/31. In state. Super excited!

For those interviewing on 12/1, anyone driving back to D.C. after the interview? I am flying into Roanoke from another area, but live in D.C. and will need to get back up there that Sat. evening. I will probably just rent a car, though would be interested in sharing a ride if someone is headed back to the area. PM me if so.

For anyone interviewing at VTC and are tight on travel funds, feel free to message me. Myself, and a few of the other students have been known to provide good food and a bed/futon/couch for applicants during interview weekend. Also, if you need travel advice, just ask.

does it help to send a pre-interview LOI here?

I think a letter of intent can help anywhere. There are some things to keep in mind though. You might not want to send a letter of intent before interviewing. Remember, an interview is to also see how you feel about the school. Adcoms might think it odd that you are already willing to make a commitment without being taken on the tour and seeing the facilities. After you interview, I think an LOI is good, assuming you are serious about it. For ethical reasons, it would be in extremely poor taste to send multiple LOI, as I know a few people have done in the past....it would probably be bad if adcoms knew something like that was going on.

I submitted a primary sometime in October because I started panicking. I never received a secondary from them. Was I screened out?

I want to know this too. I don't know if the 4000-5000 means completed applications or it includes primary applications too.

Does anyone know how many secondary recipients receive an interview? I just got one and I don't know if I have the stats to get in. They seem pretty tough, lol.

Cuongoff, you will get a rejection if they reject you. I sent my AMCAS at the same time as well.

January is taking forever. I loved this school and I am so anxious to hear back.

When did you interview?

Sent from my HTC One X using SDN Mobile

For those of you interviewing on Sat., is anyone driving back to DC/Arlington, or possibly to Blacksburg? I am looking for a potential ride and am willing to split costs. 🙂

Any guidance on what to wear to the reception Friday night of the interview weekend?

Although I couldn't attend the reception before my interview, they emailed us saying business casual. They also said the reception has no impact on your admissions decision, but you should still look decent.

dress shirt and slacks. that's what everyone else wore. some people wore ties, but you won't feel left out if you don't.

since the december interview is held early, maybe they will move their decisions to late december?! one can hope!

I didn't bother to fill the secondary because I thought I wouldn't stand a chance...

Like a week ago, I got an email urging me to finish the secondary because they have reviewed my app and deemed as a competitive applicant.

Is this a standard email that everyone gets? Does this email hold any weight at all?

I would call and ask, being very frank that you love the school but didn't consider yourself as competitive applicant. I say this because my friend got a "hold for reconsideration" presecondary and I looked at the previous threads and google, with NO information whatsoever about it.

It's a new school. We have to dig in =)

I'm in this same boat too, and am curious what they say if you call.

I have some research (nothing really substantial) with ok stats... I wonder if its really just too late now to justify the 50 bucks.

Although I can't speak for sure on this matter, I'm pretty sure this means that they liked whatever your amcas said about you...They wouldn't have sent you even a pre-generated email if you were not competitive. Sometimes medical school acceptances don't make sense.....Apply.

for the peeps that interviewed on saturday, did they tell you guys an updated timeline?

When would the best time to send a letter of interest to this school be? I turned in my application mid-october and haven't head anything back yet.
