At some point they said we would receive an emailed link to a closed class of 2017 group after they receive our intent to matriculated form. I haven't gotten then email yet though

+1 I haven't gotten anything yet either

I got the official email and the intent to matriculated forms today. There didn't seem to be any other information though. They send that out after they get the forms back, right? Sorry to be obnoxious/paranoid, but I waited a long time to get in (as has everyone else) and I'm terrified of messing something stupid up or missing something.

Thanks, and congratulations again to everyone else who has gotten in. 🙂

Did you get the matriculation checklist packet yet? it has the technical standards stuff and health insurance stuff. thats the last thing i got from them

the deadline for everything other than the intent to matriculate form is may 31st or june 15th

You should recieve the following:

1. The matriculant packet (includes a bunch of forms for health insurance, tech standards, etc.)
2. Financial Aid packet (includes worksheets to be completed)
3. Intent to Matriculate form
4. Facebook group invite (just received it today)

Also, if you call and ask, you can get more info on living options, however, it is basically just hard copies of apartment hunter and apartment finder. Also, just to save you some time, I contacted the River House (previously recommended on this thread) and was told that they were full until at least the end of August.

Cool. That's all by email, right? 🙂

Correct

I don't think I got any hard copy information at all. I might have eventually gotten a hard copy acceptance letter long after the electronic one, but I don't think so.

Does anyone remember how long it was before they received the rest of the paperwork to fill out? I was accepted off the waitlist last Friday (5/17) and filled out the intent to matriculate and the class reservation forms on the following Monday (5/20). I got confirmation that they received those, but have heard nothing since. Is this what everyone else has been experiencing, or should I call the admissions office?

Thanks!

For me, it was really scattered. They confirmed the receipt of a few things, but very few, so I would usually call a few days later to make sure they got them. However, if you have any doubt, the people in the student affairs office are very friendly and helpful.

Has anybody been told when tuition is due/if we pay all of it before classes start or in installments? I'm trying to figure out some stocks right now.

Thanks!

Half is due in the fall (when school starts, so end of July/early August I guess) and half in the spring.

Has anyone seen an academic calendar for the 2013-2014 school year yet? If so, where can I find it?

Does anyone know if there's a student clinic at vtc? Or some sort of psychological counseling office? Just trying to figure things out. Thanks in advance. 🙂

p54-56 probably has all the info you're looking for. If you're talking about a clinic run by VTC students for the community, then I have no idea

Thanks, Ill check there. 🙂 I also called the admissions office today, but the person I spoke to seemed mildly unsure...

This is a random question, do we dissect our cadavers ourselves or are they already dissected for us?

On the school tours I have been on and the students I have talked to, I have never heard of a cadaver being pre-dissected. The dissection and learning as you move through the tissues is the whole point.

Students dissect the cadavers.

This is pretty much how I feel, but some schools do use prosections (one school I interviewed at did), where the cadavers are pre-dissected by more experienced people to make it look all pretty and stuff. I'm sure its a big time saver, but I want the experience. Although we both might regret saying all this in a couple months when we're elbows deep in an abdomen haha.

My bro goes to UCLA DGSOM and they pre-dissect the cadavers for the students. He says that it saves a lot of time, but I would rather learn the anatomy better

There was at least one school I toured--I think it might have even been VTC but I could be wrong--where students mentioned that students dissect their cadavers in groups, but there were also prosected cadavers to look at in case you accidentally sliced through a nerve you weren't supposed to or something. So you did it yourself, but if you did it wrong, you weren't screwed.

Hey all!!! Congratulations to all who have received acceptances!!!! For those of you still waiting, hang in there, we're routing for ya!!! Anyways, I had a quick moment to hopefully bring some more information to some of the above questions...

Student Clinic: Some of the VTC students in my class have setup a partnership with the Bradley Free Clinic in town. On Thursday nights(and possibly one other night), student volunteers work at the clinic based on the skill level they are capable. It is a peer motivated group and the students that are involved have really appreciated the experience. It is not a requirement of the school and participation is solely based on what you want/can do.

Anatomy Lab: I think this topic is a confusing one for many medical schools across the country as the arena and philosophy of anatomy instruction appears to be evolving. Some schools are reducing/eliminating cadaver studies, others are turning to a more digital arena, others are holding firm to tradition. As unofficial tradition at VTC dictates, we hybridize everything, including anatomy!!! =) At VTC you will be assigned to groups of 6-7 students(6 groups total) of whom you will work with in the Anatomy Lab as well as within your Problem Based Learning small group curricula. These groups change every block and as such, you are likely to work on multiple cadavers during your 1st year experience as you shift from group to group. There is a visceral appreciation for anatomy with direct hands on dissection, but unfamiliarity with anatomy along with time constraints makes it easy to slice through an important structure. With 6 cadavers, there are 6 chances someone will do a good job and produce a dissection worthy of examination! Ha! But it isn't all trial by fire. VTC is exploring a lot of techniques to make these experiences more academic. For starters, the anatomy faculty are superb! We have a surgeon and a neuroscientist fully capable of not only guiding you through your dissection, but also provide some great clinical highlights. Second, one of the tables have a camera positioned directly overhead that can project dissection relevant procedures/structures to the monitors throughout the room. This comes in handy for those intermittent faculty led prosections to get us through the tough parts. Finally, VTC is exploring the use of some interesting technology to further develop the anatomy experience (see link below):

All in all, just as many things in medicine go, you get what you put into it. VTC grants first years plenty access to the anatomy labs for further study. As for exams, I know VTC has been changing the way they have been testing anatomy so I'm afraid I cannot really comment on this as it is ever changing.

I hope this helps!

Does anyone know if there's a general PC/Mac preference? I really have not had good luck with PCs, but I'm not sure if there would be an issue with Mac compatibility with necessary programs...

Thanks for the info! Thats all very cool to hear.

+1, if a current student wouldn't mind talking about computers and compatibility that would be great.

I'm looking to get a new laptop as well before school starts (PC is 4+ yrs old and battery is effed up). The student handbook says that VTC has laptop purchase programs with Dell and Apple, so maybe students can get discounted prices, but I haven't heard anything yet or asked.

Also fyi if you haven't heard, the new line of intel processors just got released recently and are supposed to allow for much longer battery life and slightly improved performance over the current line. Apple's new macbook air has these processors, as well as a couple of sony's and an acer, but I think more PC's will be released with them within in the next month or so.

Another question:

So I'm looking for apartments right now. A couple of them want proof of student loans so they know that I'm not going to default on payments. A. Does anyone know how to get said proof of loans? B. There's a good chance that I'm not going to be taking out any loans between the grant VTC is giving, selling my stocks, wiping out my savings, and one or two other things. Can I still get proof of a loan, even if I'm not taking one out this year?

Sorry for the many questions.

If you don't end up taking out a loan you should be able to show a bank statement of your savings to "prove" you're not going to default on the rent. Alternately if you have a good relationship with your parents/legal guardians, you could have them co-sign the lease. If one of them is receiving a paycheck, then a copy of that should suffice. I didn't look at apartments here, but apartments I've lived in before had multiple ways you could show you could afford to live there. Good luck!

What date was the white coat ceremony last year? Or, what day of the week is it typically?

Has anyone heard about a definitive date for this year's ceremony?

Just trying to get an idea of when it might be...thanks for any input!

Computers - I have seen Mac, PC, and Linux all used without much problem at VTC. I dont know if any Linux distros can run vitalsource software (electronic textbooks) or the software used in histology, but I have seen students use Ubuntu without much stress. As far as I am aware, Mac and PC are fully compatible with software you will use. Also, tablets are becoming quite the novelty. Great for reading textbooks as well as taking notes/accessing EMR on the wards. If you are interested in a tablet, try to find one that can dock with a keyboard. The Asus/Android line has an amazing notetaking app and in my opinion, blows the iPad out of the water as far as functionality goes.

Apartments - can't help you prove to a landlord you won't bogart them, but if anyone is apartment shopping in the roanoke area and needs a guest bed to crash on during your search, look me up... i will be around, studying for step 2... i have 2 beagles but plenty of claritin if you are allergic... if you are a Zyrtec person, you can just go find yourself another place to stay! =P

White Coat Ceremony - this may throw some of you off, but plan for white coat ceremony to be held in late October... i know a lot of schools may hold there white coat ceremonies much earlier, sometimes during orientation week... but VTC makes a very big deal about white coats and their significance... with that said, they like to have you go through some clinical experience within the curriculum before you put on your new threads... Held on a Friday evening.
