2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just looking at the 2011 appic thread from last year only to find the site I WAS most excited about had several posts like the following:

"I heard back right away. That said, I requested a phone interview because I heard from 4 past interns and 1 faculty member that its an awful site. Apparently, last year, every intern had negative things to say about every rotation! (working 70+ hour weeks, no respect, etc) So, maybe i heard back because I had a special request? Just couldnt justify a flight and hotel for that site .... "

Without looking over the thread again (bad memories, yuck), I'd just caution people to think about others' motives when making comments like that about particular sites. Not to accuse anyone of anything (I don't remember who made what comments, so please don't take this personally), I just wonder about the motivation behind posts like that. It could be simply to convey information or it could be to increase one's odds of matching to a site by dissuading others from applying. Based on memory, there was a TON of site bashing in Phase II. It could be that people were more upset when posting and that negativity impacted their writing about sites or it could be that people saw an opportunity to dissuade competitors for the spots... So make your own judgments and decisions based on information that you gather directly from identifiable/accountable sources.

Makes sense to me. I probably shouldn't be looking at the 2011 appic thread anyway. Good luck to all!!

After the match, I heard that internship programs have some capacity to either specify the number of applicants that come from a certain doctoral program or that they have identified some way to enact this through how they rank. I was surprised at this, although reviewing past match results suggests that internship sites have been able to limit the number of applicants from certain programs to 1. This seems to differ from my understanding of how the match ranking system is supposed to work. However, I realize that I might be confused and/or misinformed about the process (could also add naive to that list). I wanted to check in with other people on this forum to see if this seems familiar and transparent.

Think I understand my own question now:

http://www.natmatch.com/psychint/apcmultr.htm

Also: http://www.appic.org/Match/FAQs/Training-Directors/Rank-Order-Lists

2. What special ranking options are available to internship programs during each Phase of the APPIC Match?

During Phase I of the Match, internship programs have a number of special ranking options available to them:

Use of Multiple Rank Order Lists: Submitting more than one Rank Order List for a program can allow a program to meet certain requirements that might not be possible by using only one Rank Order List. For example, it is possible within the matching process to attempt to recruit a particular distribution of applicants for a program based on specific applicant characteristics.

Reverting Unfilled Positions from One Rank Order List to Another: This option allows a program to move a position from one Rank Order List to another List if that position cannot be filled from the original List.

Limiting the Number of Matches from any One University or School: This option allows a program to impose an upper limit on the number of applicants from any one university/school who are matched on a single program Rank Order List.
Due to the accelerated timeline for Phase II of the Match, the use of multiple Rank Order Lists and reversion of positions are NOT permitted in Phase II. However, in Phase II, programs may still use the option to limit the number of matches from any one university or school.

More information on each of these options can be found in the instructions for participating in the Match provided by NMS in December to each internship site that is registered for the Match. Information on these options is also available on the National Matching Services web site by the end of December each year.

As I said in the discussion thread, I think all this information is available but no one looks at the information for the other side until they get screwed by the process. (Sometimes repeatedly, like me. 😛 )

Many of the students in my program had interviews at the same sites. After talking with some of the students the other day, none of us matched at the same sites. The five students that I talked with and we had similar site interviews, we have all matched at different sites. There were six other students and I have not talked to them yet about where they matched.

It would seem logical that it may not be a good fit to have one program place students at the same sites, year in and year out. My guess is you are right, and APPIC has some regulations allowing sites to indicate if they want students from the same program. This may not bode to well for students going through as a couple, but I believe the couple scenario has a specifier where they may match at different sites but within 50 miles of each other.

I am considering contacting sites where I interviewed, ranked high, but did not match to ask for feedback/information about potential weakness(es) in my application/interviewing skills that might have contributed to not being ranked higher. What do folks think about this? Any personal experiences asking sites for this type of feedback? Any suggestions about how to best approach this? Thanks for any input!

I did this...and I got some great feedback. I asked a few sites, and 2 of the 3 responded back. I did this after Match was over, not during Clearinghouse (now Phase II), so I think that helped me because the DCTs actually had time to decompress from everything.

I think this is a great idea. I know of a couple people in my cohort who did this and got great feedback on their interviewing skills.

I, however, emailed 2 out of the 3 sites I interviewed at and never received a response. I know TDs don't HAVE to respond, but I thought, "how am I supposed to improve for next time if I don't know what my weaknesses are?"

When I emailed the TDs, I said something very brief along the lines of, "I was disappointed to learn I did not match to your site this year...I am open to your positive and constructive feedback about my application materials and interviewing skills so I can improve for next year's applications."

I didn't email site 3 because they were awful with communication throughout the whole interview process, so I didn't even bother to try. That, and they typically interview 100 people for 3 positions, so the odds were against me just a little bit :barf:

I remember that post because I interviewed at that site last year as well and that was NOT my experience at all. I would definitely question the motives of those comments.

First, you don't meet all the interns from all the rotations because the rotations interview on different days, so I don't know how that person would have met "every intern" from "every rotation." Second, the interns who focused on report writing admitted to spending 50 hours a week working when a report is due, but I never heard anything about 70 hr weeks. Third, there are always going to be negative experiences to an internship, just as there are positives. As far as the interns not being happy, one was staying on for a residency, so it couldn't have been THAT bad.

I was really excited about that site last year as well, even after my interview, it's definitely one to be excited for 🙂

Yes, take negative comments about sites from anonymous sources with a grain of salt. Some people are not above trashing a site to increase their odds of matching there. In the past, there was a poster who talked about a site that her "friend" had visited and hated for reasons which she enumerated. That same person later posted about how happy she was to have matched there.

I'm not saying this is the case with the poster you referenced or that it is common (hopefully!) but it does happen.

Thanks for sharing this and for the suggestion of how to frame such a request. I'll send out an email shortly and hopefully I can get a response from the DT.

Does anyone know when sites typically get back to you during phase 2?

I looked on the 2011 forum and most people heard back from sites by the middle of following week from the application deadline. I'm anticipating hearing from sites on Wednesday or Thursday. There were a couple of sites that did not schedule interviews for two weeks, but it seemed like the trend was the following week from the deadline.

Also, someone posted that Match II interviews were schedule at the end of the week last year.

I did not go through the process last year so I'm not 100% sure. I hope this helps. I'm on pins and needles. Good luck!

I mentioned one page back on this thread my experiences this year and last year.

Last year, I got 2 of 3 interviews in the first half of the week after the application deadline. My interviews were late that week and early the following week, about a week before the rank deadline. This year, I got an interview (Skype) offer by phone for one site on Thursday afternoon. I expect to hear from another site, possibly, before/on Wednesday. (I don't at all expect to hear from the other site I applied to. 😛 ) The interviews will, again, probably happen late this coming week and early the following week, as they did last year.

Has anyone else heard back from sites?

Lets hope for good news over the next few days! I applied to 9 APA sites during phase 2. I appear to be a good fit for each of them.... so I sure hope it works out!!

I havent heard from any sites. Will post if I do. Good luck

I received an interview offer on Friday afternoon from a site that is local to me (Chicago area) Hopefully we'll all hear good things over the next few days!

Any advice for Skype interviews? I've video chatted before and done internship interviews before but I've never combined the two. Tips?

I heard back from a non-APA site in CT this morning. Interview will be early next week.

Here's hoping for more good news for all of us!

Congrats! Curious if it was via email or phone? Hope we all get some good news today.

I had one Skype interview in Phase I and it was definitely a bit awkward. I would check the lighting and the background of where you will be before the interview. Also realize that you can't make eye contact which makes it strange. Good luck and congrats on your interview.

My offer was by phone. The interview will be in person, which is nice, but surprising.

Thanks! I have a feeling that, no matter how nicely I set up the room/area, the dog - angry at being excluded from the conversation - will start barking at noises outside the house, there'll be a power outage, a lightbulb will burn out, etc. 😛

Good luck everyone! :luck:

I had quite a few Skype interviews in Phase I, and I'll second the comment somebody else made about the awkwardness of being unable to make eye contact with the interviewers. I did a practice interview with a friend over Skype, which helped tremendously in familiarizing myself with the experience. One of the most useful pieces of feedback she gave me was to make sure I was looking directly into the camera when speaking, rather than at the image of the interviewers on my screen (which made me look like I was looking down). Some of my interviewers actually commented on this, saying that I was the only person to whom they'd spoken who looked like I was looking at them and asking how I was managing it.

Best of luck!

So did it work out for you with the interviews? Like should I go with the social norm for video chatting or should I go with the interpersonal interaction norm of eye contact? 😛

Haha, that's a tough one to answer - I wound up matching to my first-ranked site, which only conducted phone interviews, so I have no idea how I was perceived by the sites with which I did Skype interviews (for all I know, they thought I was some peculiar, heavy eye contact-making weirdo ). However, when the sites asked me about how I was making it happen, they seemed to consider it a positive (i.e., like they were hoping to adopt whatever top-secret strategy I was using for their own use 😛). I did a mix of the two - I looked at the camera when speaking to them and then looked at the screen image when they were speaking. Another thing I just remembered - consider practicing opening a file someone sends over Skype. One of my interviewers sent me a vignette that way, and I couldn't figure out how to receive and open the document. They wound up having to read it to me (which I'm sure impressed them tremendously with my technological prowess ).

I'll mix it up and let you know how it goes. 😉 I don't do interviewing particularly well, though I think I was getting better this year. Now they want me to Skype?! 😱

Anyone hear about any interviews today? I haven't. Just expecting maybe one more... but maybe not. It's the site I had all the drama with my program about ranking last year, so maybe I'm tainted in their eyes. *grumble grumble grumble*

I am still waiting to hear from all the sites I applied to. Doesn't seem like most programs have offered interviews yet.

I'll never forget my first phone interview for internship (pre-Skype days), mostly because it was a complete trainwreck from start to finish. The people on the other end weren't even done introducing themselves when one of the groundskeepers in my development flipped on his leaf blower. Then there was my neighbor's dog who ran over to my yard and was attacking/barking at my screen door. About 10 minutes after that my UPS guy kept ringing my doorbell repeatedly to let me know he was here (he knew I studied with my earbuds in, so he'd just mash on the buzzer for a bit...talk about bad timing!). Thankfully the site wasn't a good match for me, so no harm, no foul.

Quiet day today... hopefully tomorrow is a little more active.

Yes, I heard from UNC - Chapel Hill on Friday (They stated that they were conducting interviews last Friday afternoon, today and Tuesday). I also heard from Friends Hospital this evening.

I guess it's nice to know that other people are receiving interviews, so that at least I can cross those places off my list!

:smack: ugh...

P.S. all is quiet on the Western front. No calls or emails today...

Did you hear from Friends Hospital via email or telephone?

1 interview invite so far!

You would have known if you got an interview invite or not today from this site though.

Got an email rejection from Southern Utah University today. There are others in my cohort who received rejection emails from Pacific Clinics as well.

I know of people who have received interview offers for Berea Children's Home and Hamilton Health Sciences (Ontario). (Not sure if those sites are finished extended offers.) I received an interview from Daily Behavioral Health (based on the dates they gave me, I would guess they are done interviewing?). All offers were via e-mail.

So it looks like the following sites have offered interviews:

Friends Hospital-phone
Berea's Children's Home-email
Daily Behavioral Health-email
UNC-phone

Rejections

Pacific Clinics
Southern Utah University

I received an interview invite for University of Houston Clear Lake last Thursday and interviewed yesterday via Skype. Also has anyone heard from:

New Mexico State Univ. CC
Arizona State Univ CC
Cal State Univ CC
Institute of Multicultural Counseling

Thanks! Let's keep updating this and good luck everyone!

Does anyone know when sites typically get back to you during phase 2?

I was in Phase 2 last year and my first invites came on 3/8 and the last one came on 3/16. All of my interviews took place over the phone, though offers were extended by e-mail or phone. I didn't have any skype or in person interviews, though I know that a few sites did that last year.

I am waiting to hear back from all those sites as well. So if you hear something let me know, as I don't expect to get interviews from all (or any :scared:) of them. Interestingly though, the Institute is participating in both APPIC and CAPIC (the California schools only internship program) so I am interested to see how they work around having two different sets of applications, likely with some overlap.

The only way I could see that working that immediately springs to mind would be them having a certain number of spots dedicated solely to each of the two match programs (e.g., 2 APPIC spots and 2 CAPIC spots). Otherwise, I don't see how they could get around potentially violating the APPIC/CAPIC match guidelines.

Edit: Unless it's not against one/both match policies to pull out early due to reasons other than funding cuts.
