So, does anyone have a sense of the average "return on investment" for applications to interviews? I have heard a statistic of approximately 40% from previous years' applicants in my program (again, on average), anyone else hear anything? I have yet to hear of anyone who was invited for an interview every single place they applied, but maybe it does happen on occasion.

I don't know about percentages. I think it has more to do with goodness of fit. If you apply to places where you have the necessary experience then you'll have a higher percentage. I've known very qualified applicants not to get interviews because they applied to sites that didn't fit their experience. I have also known individuals to get 16 interviews on 20 sites.

sure, of course, but there is a certain amount of randomness and arbitrariness in the system beyond the amorphous concept of "fit" that makes averages somewhat useful information, and individuals' experiences less so.

Do you guys feel comfortable sharing the names of sites from whom you've received confirmation emails?

Surely! U of Wisconsin, Madison Counseling Center, Northwestern College Counseling Center, and University of Illinois Counseling Center (I think this gives away the type of sites I applied too!)

emails from Suffolk University Counseling Center and McLean Hospital (sort of confirmation/acknowledgment)

I submitted my 21st and final application today. I thought I'd feel a sense of relief but instead I'm just panicked and neurotic. lol. I can't believe that it's already time to apply for internship. It seems like just yesterday I was on SDN talking about applying to grad schools! In a way I feel like internship is the last hurdle to get through before I can finally say that the rest of my life isn't being put on hold for school anymore. Not knowing where the heck I'm going to be living in a year is making it really hard to make any plans!

Good luck to everybody. I can't wait until we start getting interview invites!

Is anyone else having nightmares about this process? I have had dreams that I submitted my applications to the wrong sites and started to receive interview offers at places that I had never heard of before. My spouse dreamed last night that we moved cross country and our movers dropped our furniture off in the wrong city! This is going to be a long few months for us I'm afraid...

nope, I hardly ever remember my dreams unless I write it down immediately after waking up.

I just make sure to check my cover letters after hitting the Pay Now to make sure that it was the right one, and I read through it to make sure I'm not referencing another site. The Essays, CV, etc are the same so I don't check those. Then I pay for the site after reviewing the PDF of it.

Wasnt quite that bad, but when i moved for internship, our movers did break about 20 wine glasses the vineyard gave us at our wedding as a thank you. :scared:

Congrats RayneeDeigh! I have a few more to submit, but am hoping to celebrate at least a little when I get all my apps in later this week. 🙂

Are you applying all over the country then? I did and it's a real mix of scary and exciting to think I will be packing up (hopefully) next summer and be off to who knows where! Yes, looking forward to hearing from more people when interviews start rolling in... soon enough!

I'm in Canada so I'm applying all across Canada and into the US as well. If you asked me several months ago where I'd want to be I would have said I wanted to go as far away as possible to get a taste of something different. But now I kinda like the idea of staying close to home and not having to move or break up with someone, haha. We'll see what happens! Good luck to you!

Yep, I remember those days, Good Luck... being in internship myself this year, I don't envy you all... this application process is worse than trying to get into grad school in the first place!

Okay. I will have a B or even B- in Psychopathology on my grad transcript (clinical psych). How will that if at all impact securing an internship side? How important are grades from the doctoral program??

Any interns or former interns who can speak to that from their experience.

I'm applying right now and what we've heard from the APPIC stats is that grades are one of the lowest ranked things. Do your best to secure that B, but don't fret too much. Most people have some B's on their record. The reason why grades are not a big factor is that at this level everyone has more than a 3.0. If you fail a class they may look harder at your grades...but at least in my program a B is passing. Hope that helps.

Agreed. My school's clinic has an APA internship site, and the Training Director has told us that she does not care about grades because everyone is going to have at least a 3.0. Receiving a B- will not affect your ability to secure an internship.

Just received an application confirmation from UC Davis. In a way, it's nice to know they've received all the materials and they're not lost out there in internet space, but it did make my heart beat a little faster as I scanned the email for either an "I'm sorry, but..." or "We would like you to interview.."

x3. I've heard multiple TDs say that assuming the person hasn't failed out of their program, grades aren't taken into consideration much at all, as they do little to separate applicants at this level. Amount and breadth of clinical experience (depending on the site), research accomplishments (also depending on the site), letters of rec, essays, and cover letters are infinitely more important.

Thank you all. That's what I thought. Makes me feel better. G'luck with APPIC!!

Last year it got reposted in this forum daily, I'm not sure I would even know where to find it if it was moved elsewhere??

I am not sure what you mean. I was alluding to set up like that on the interview/acceptance thread for people applying to graduate programs. I can't do it, as I am extremely busy at the moment, as is everyone else. I just thought it would be a good suggestion if anyone was willing to do it.

I believe with last year's thread, the individual who started it went back and regularly edited the first post in the thread with the list of sites that had sent interview offers/rejections. It seemed to work well that way, although someone would need to ask the first poster in this year's thread if they'd be willing to do it.

A member of my cohort received an interview offer from MercyFirst in Long Island, NY last week.

When do the majority of sites get in touch with applicants for interviews? Before Thanksgiving or after?

depends, you can look at last year's thread to see who gave out interview invites early, but most are after thanksgiving from my recollection.

Isn't MercyFirst's deadline on 11/15?

Deadlines don't necessarily matter at sites that have rolling invites. Last year a woman in my program got an invite in October! Before any applications were due! She interviewed like the first or second week of November.

Actually, now that I think about it, it could have been that same site because all of her interviews were in NYC.

I was checking the forum last year for the sites I applied to this year and the first of my 8 sites notified on December 2nd. But a LOT of people got interviews in mid to late November. Its just easier for me to not look for anything until December so I don't get myself too worked up, except for those two weeks between Dec. 1st and Dec. 15th!

I'm curious to see how the ABCT conference being a week earlier than usual will affect notifications. My uneducated guess is that the amount of notifications sent this week will be higher than in previous years. But again, just a guess! Any thoughts on this?

Is it possible to receive a refund for a site that I applied to that has just lost funding and will cancel their internship for next year? Their deadline is not until the 18th but I have already sent in my application.

As best I no, know, it's not possible. I had a site pull out on notification day (12/15) last year, and just chocked it up to bad luck/unfortunate circumstances.

but many sites w/11-1 deadlines extended their deadlines a couple of days due to the technical difficulties, so I can see them not sending out invites until after their usual from previous years.

Didn't most extend by just 3-4 days?

congrats on all the early interviews!!! i have received 3 e-mail confirmations: University of Texas at Austin, Stanford, and California St. University, Long Beach. Also, an applicant from my program received an interview from U of Kansas Med Center (I believe). good luck all!!!

I received an interview invite at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, as did one of my classmates!

sure, of course, but there is a certain amount of randomness and arbitrariness in the system beyond the amorphous concept of "fit" that makes averages somewhat useful information, and individuals' experiences less so.

Averages can also be misleading, so take everything with a grain of salt. The challenge with the idea of FIT is that it encompasses a number of factors that can skew an application one way or another. If a competitive academic medical center interviews 20% of the total applicants who apply, that doesn't mean that you have a 1 in 5 chance. They may attract a large portion of applicants who are "reach" applicants, so they may not be in serious contention for an interview. Add in the local applicants that apply because of geographic restriction, and now you have some inflated numbers. If you account for all of these people, the "good fit"/"competitive" applicants may actually have a 1 in 3 chance for an interview.

I submitted my 21st and final application today. I thought I'd feel a sense of relief but instead I'm just panicked and neurotic. lol. I can't believe that it's already time to apply for internship.

It's nice to see a familiar name! Good luck!

I lost my entire wine glass collection, which I amassed from visits to a few dozen different vineyards. I am still bitter about the whole thing! I mistakenly shipped some of my things UPS and USPS, which was a mistake. Below is what was left of one of my boxes sent USPS, in addition to this note:

A parcel addressed to or from you was in need of repair. Every attempt was made to restore your parcel to its original condition. If your parcel is devoid of some or all of the contents, please complete the enclosed form and return it in the envelope provided. Every effort will be made to locate your items.

Do yourself a favor and use movers. I have moved 3 times since, and the only casuality has been my juicer.

I was a reviewer one year, and as long as the GPA was at least a 3.5 (more A's than B's) and I didn't see any Fs, I didn't pay much mind to the student's transcripts. Grades don't really matter at this level, as long as you pass. I'd probably want an explanation about any Fs, but that wouldn't automatically exclude something, though it'd make me review their academics more carefully.

Is it possible to receive a refund for a site that I applied to that has just lost funding and will cancel their internship for next year? Their deadline is not until the 18th but I have already sent in my application.

I'd inquire, as I'd be rather annoyed if I was penalized for something that I had no control over and/or couldn't know at the time of submission.

Hi,

Out of curiosity, what internship site of yours lost its funding? I have a site deadline on 11/18 and I would like know if it's the same one.
thanks
scott

I definitely had an application-related nightmare the other night- one of my letter writers is a neurologist, an MD. He is awesome but super concise and no one in my program has had letters of rec from physicians, so we didn't know what to expect.

anyway, in my dream, his letter of rec was ONE paragraph long, and included how many times a day he noticed me laugh at the clinic- 47! And that was about it, haha. It was maybe 4 sentences long.

Hopefully it was just a dream!

Letters from MDs often focus on different things than what we are accustomed to seeing in psychology, not good/bad...just different. They are definitely more concise, though hopefully you spoke with him about the kinds of things he should highlight in his letter.

The VA in Lexington's deadline is tomorrow, but after several weeks of starting and stopping the cover letter for it, I just can't make it to be a good fit. I don't enjoy working solely with adults, and I've very little experience with PTSD. I will consider it next year if I do not match this year, but I just couldn't make myself enthusiastic enough to write a well-written cover letter to show how much of a match we are. Plus, I have no idea what the Appalachian culture is like and a bit wary of it.

Some of the NY state psychiatric hospitals (OMH funded) that were previously affected by the internship layoff scare will not have an internship next year...Bronx psychiatric center, Creedmoor psychiatric center, Hudson River psychiatric center, Rockland psychiatric center, and Sagamore psychiatric center. This news just came out today, I'm sure they'll post this info on the APPIC listserv soon.

Well you are lucky if you can. I ranked VA Lex number 1 last year after my interview! Lex is a great town and rural KY is...well rural KY. Its no more scary than rural Kansas, Alabama, Mississippi, etc. From what I recall, they don't care whether you have experience in PTSD or not (they dont want good assessment experience though, as most VAs do). Just willingness to learn.

I received an offer yesterday afternoon for an interview at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital (Behavioral Medicine Track) -- it was by phone!
