2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all! First congrats to those of you who have gotten interviews! For those of you who haven't hang in there tomorrow's the big day! Thanks for the all the support and congratulations I've received the support through this tiresome process has been incredible.

I do have one question. Do a lot of others have later notification dates for some of their sites? Like 3-4 of mine have dates 12-24/12-30 and I'm going crazy. As stressful as this process is/has been I don't want to wait another 2 weeks! UGH! Thanks!

Personalized email rejection for the Adolescent Track at Yale.

So glad this process is wrapping up soon.

I have sites with notification dates for Dec. 22, January 9th, and January 15th.

I know that people have heard from the adult/child track at CHA (congrats to those who have interviews!), but has anyone heard from Track I: adult outpatient/acute services? Thank you!
No, I am waiting too... good luck! holding out hope 🙂

Got interview offers at:

WestCoast Children's
The Help Group
Minneapolis Internship Consortium (University of St. Thomas Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services)

Good luck everyone!

Congratulations!!! So happy to see your good news 🙂

University of South Florida Counseling Center mass e-mail rejection with the subject line "USF Internship Open House". I hate that. Why would you title the e-mail that when you are about to slap someone with a rejection?! 😡

Interview at the Bronx VA. Mass email to "dear applicant"

Was the rejection from Edith Nourse Rogers VA for a particular track?

No it wasn't track specific, and the letter was your typical.."blah blah too many applicants this year..blah..wish you the best...blah.."

HAHAHAHAHA I got the same email!

WTF were they thinking??

I'm sorry to hear that but good luck with the rest!

Just received a call for an interview with Track I (adult outpatient/acute care). So excited! Hope others get more good news today 😀

Just received my rejection email from CUMC...kind of made peace with that one 3 weeks ago when invites went out. Womp womp.

URGH x1000
Just got an invite to Emory (mass email) which is my top spot (yayyyy) but I was sure I was going to get a rejection... so that means calling to rearrange other interviews I'd already confirmed PLUS flights I'd already booked to make this happen. This process is a DELIGHT!!!!

I heard a rumor that Canadian sites are not accepting American students this year for some reason. I have received rejections from all 4 Canadian sites I applied to, including one where several alumni from my program completed their internships (Millard Health). Have any of you (Americans) received offers from Canadian sites?

Yes I got an interview with Baycrest Geriatric Centre. I was rejected from 3 other Canadian sites I applied to though.

I'm American and got an invite to a Canadian site. I heard that they give Canadians preference though.

(I'm a Canadian student)

I haven't heard that, but I do know that most Canadian sites will only take Americans if they're more qualified than Canadian applicants. I think it's an effort to try to keep the Canadian internship imbalance more manageable than it is south of the border. A lot of Ontario sites are only taking Ontario students too, so the imbalance affects people in a variety of unfortunate ways.

For the record, I've been rejected by every American site I've applied to so far. I think now that times are tough each region is just trying to make do.

Is anyone comfortable sharing questions that they believe caught them particularly off guard? I have only had one interview so far, but nothing was particularly unusual.

I was already warned that it might happen, but I think the quesiton that was most difficult for me to answer was "I haven't had a chance to look at any of your materials, tell me about yourself?" It's just so hard to know where to begin. I went with my most recent professional experiences.

Anyone else have a question that stumped them they they are comfortable sharing?

....And a second rejection from Palm Beach Youth County Affairs via mass e-mail...I am gonna need a drink tonight. 🙁🙁

I'm really fed up with one site in particular. I emailed them way back in July to ask them a question that would determine if I was eligible to apply or not. They never responded, so I took a chance and applied anyway. Their notification date has already passed, people have gotten invited, and I CONTINUE to have no word from them.

I mean yes I realize you're super busy but come on. Send a bulk email rejection and call it a day.

I am in a very similar position. I e-mailed a site back in October because my program needed information since they were not APA accredited. Their notification deadline was on the 9th and I have e-mailed the director since I heard people were getting interviews on Monday. Still no word. I am wondering if my e-mail in October hurt my chances because I had to ask so many questions that were not answered by the website....It's like I paid money to apply to your stupid site, the least you could do is give me a formal rejection letter.

I also got an invitation to interview for Emory's General Track! Congrats to others who also got interviews. I called within 20 minutes of receiving the email and my preferred interview date, December 29, was already booked!! I scheduled for January 4 instead. Maybe a long shot, but is there anyone on this forum who is interviewing on the 29th and might be switch with me??? THANKS!!!!

I've had a very similar experience this year, I spoke with someone at a site in Ontario who told me that they weren't even reviewing American applications this year. I understand that people are trying really hard to match students in their programs, but it would have been nice to know before I applied so broadly in Canada.

Personalized email interview invite to the VA in Fargo, ND 😀

I recd that same one from Gouvenuer. It was difficult. Do profeessional than personal

Last year in a group interview I got asked first their "tricky" question (of which they had one every year but I only knew the one from the year before). They asked what influences/experiences from my childhood/upbringing influenced my decision to want to be in a helping profession. It was a pretty CBT/evidence based site so I wasn't expecting any questions about my childhood or family. So that kind of threw me.

Which 'OSU' is this? Ohio? Oregon? Also, was it personalized? If so, what letter does your last name start with?

CONGRATS, btw!😀

THE Ohio State.

It had my name on it, dunno how much it was personalized otherwise.

P. An "L" friend also got an invite.

I think there should be a rule that rejection and invites be sent within a certain # of hours/days of each other so I don't hold on to hope that they somehow forgot me or I'm on their alternate list.

The internship process can also be a very hectic time for internship sites, so interviews/rejects seem to go out when they can get out. The challenge with formalizing notification is that sites can have different "review" processes, typically hammered out over the years of review, so that can impact how/when notifications happen.

I went through one cycle on the review side, and each application was reviewed and graded by at least 2 people AND our Director of Clinical Training...and then there were additional steps by the internship committee, but the point is that all of this is done in addition to our regular workload. I'd argue that the vast majority of people on the other side reviewing are trying to be fair and give every application review fair time, which sometimes mean there is a "first notification" and "second notification".

Did you choose 1/19 or did they assign you that date? Just thinking...if the "local"applicant was given 12/19 (the first interview day) and you were called two days before the notification deadline for 1/19 (the last interview day) perhaps if applicants are not invited by phone by the end of today then its a rejection.

This is how I deal, apparently.

don't give up just yet....they are still calling. I had given up hope, only to receive a phone call today. I don't know that there is any rhyme or reason to the order (my last name is early in the alphabet and I JUST got a call today so I doubt it's alphabetical).

I feel like its quieter than it should be today... still waiting to hear from a site that notified on Monday before the deadline last year... then I will be done. If I get an interview, that will be two interviews! If not, only one interview... my one interview offer came first. After 6 rejections, its really hard to keep the faith that my last notification could be an interview.

Starting this off with good wishes and good luck to everyone on here! Crazy process isn't it? I have a possibly obvious question but I'd like some feedback. I'm a third year psyd student and I've done everything possible to be competative to apply this year (e.g., completing my dissertation proposal, extra curricular activities, leadership roles, etc.) However, I'm wondering if others are seeing that there is a "seniority" to this process? Again kind of obvious that the answer is yes but I'm throwing it out there. Any feedback? Overall, I'm happy with 2 interviews/ 8 rejections/ 7 waiting... but would like more interviews 🙂 Thanks and good luck all!

I had one site with a Jan 2nd notification date but they've already offered me an interview so I guess they're ahead of their own timeline. Their materials were due late too....Dec. 1st...and I got mine in the first week of Nov. so that may be part of the reason I have already heard from them.

It has been hit and miss at our program. Some 3rd year applicants have 1-2 interviews while others have 8ish. Probably depends on their backgrounds prior to graduate school. Some of the ones with more interviews have had stellar clinical training prior to school.

I've been told by faculty in my program and a TD that how far along you are toward completing your dissertation plays a large factor - so people who have all their data collected (or better yet are ready to or have defended) are more appealing because they won't have that to do while on internship. I don't think that seniority is a large factor (other than you're more likely to be done with data collection) as I have only 3 interviews, have extraordinary practicum experiences, leadership roles, publications, teaching experience, and fabulous letters of rec but do not have data collection done and I am a 7th year. IF seniority were a factor I'd be rolling in the interviews😳

This sounds like a good reason too! I could just be that they throw the applications up in the air and the ones that fall in a certain area are invited--who really knows! IT really seems extremely random at times.
