2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted all of my 21 applications on Saturday. Today I realized that forgot a send in one supplemental piece. One of the programs wanted an unofficial copy of my undergraduate transcripts (which is just ridiculous by the way). I had them ready to go, but simply forgot to attach them to my application. So, I emailed them to the administrative assistant for the program. I didn't know what else to do. Should I have sent them directly to the training director instead? I didn't want to annoy the training director, or highlight my mistake too much. This was one of my top sites, so now I am just kicking myself!!!

I don't know, it really depends on the program. Some administrative assistants put all the stuff together but some don't even know their site has a psychology internship (or what that entails). If you don't hear back from the assistant, maybe contact the TD before Thursday?

Or maybe if APPIC gets past the most recent difficulties, maybe they could add the supplement to your application to that site? I'm not sure, sorry. 🙁

If a site 'closes' their portal, can an applicant still apply to them (futilely)? Or, will APPIC say that the site is not accepting applications?

I'm asking b/c I don't want to spend money on a site that won't consider me b/c I did not get my application in on time with them.

It might be different this year but last year sites were removed from the select designations page when their portals closed, so you couldn't apply. But a lot has changed since last year!🙄

Thanks, I hope that is still the case. I've got about 3 more children's site lined up that I would apply to if the ones today don't extend their deadlines.

I finally got through to the helpline and was able to add designated sites using Firefox. I also noticed that everything (even the money ordered submissions) are listed as "completed."

What a day!!! Good luck to all 🙂

one, dartmouth, but it's due 11/15, and that's a real stretch (they are super competitive). The other's have a couple weeks too.

I'm applying there, too. I applied last year but didn't have the minimum hours so I don't think they even looked at my materials. I wonder if their applications tend to be more for neuropsych or if all three tracks get roughly the same number of applicants. Like it's a nationally known hospital with tons of research going on but I doubt anyone outside NH or right on the border of VT knows where West Lebanon is (unless they went to Dartmouth).

Yay! Congratulations! Now you can "relax."

Well the last 48 hours have been interesting. I submitted all of my apps today and I am so glad it's over. Here's to hoping I match in round 1, I don't want to do this again!

So, there's a good chance APPIC is not going to resolve my issue. So, I called at 9am EST, and the rep told me he was going to call me back. He never did, so I just called, and now another support person told me I have to send an e-mail to customer service to send it onto IT to fix. I don't know why it required ME calling to get this information when I could have done this earlier.

The second support guy told me I have a very small chance of getting that resolved today b/c obviously IT is having a lot of issues to deal with today, and given how late I am sending this request to them, he isn't sure when it'll get done.

I am very sick and tired of this process. You would think they would have a safeguard in place for this issue. I don't care that I made the mistake about this one site, but they won't even let me apply to any other sites b/c of this issue. I have about 3 sites due today, so I am very bummed. Of course, I can only hope they will keep their portals open until Thursday, and that my issue is resolved by that date.

I'm sorry to hear that your still having difficulties with your application. I hope that it works out soon. Keep your head up and try to engage in some self-care right now. :-/

Thanks! I will shoot you a PM to see if there's any other overlap of your interviews and some of the sites I'm looking at.

Sure thing - I'll keep an eye out for the PM!

I did the same thing last year and it wasn't a big deal. I forgot to add on a report to one app so I e-mailed it to the admin assistant right away, explained my mistake, apologized, etc, and kindly asked that my report be added to my app. They responded the next day I think and said they added my report and that my app was then complete and gave general info about interviews. Considering all you forgot was undergrad transcripts, I don't think it's a big deal (granted that's just my opinion and I def. freaked when I realized my mistake too. The process is stressful and many of us panic about every possible error or mistake.) Just try and relax as much as possible 🙂 In my opinion, it was a small mistake, you realized it, and then sent the transcripts to them promptly (who knows...maybe the assistant can somehow add it to your electronic app so then the TD won't even realize it was left out initially!). It's ok 🙂

I have received confirmation back from two 11/1 deadline sites, Children's Memorial and Vanderbilt Consortium, that they are both extending their deadlines to 11/3. Hope that helps others!

One site asks for 2 integrated assessment reports and 1 "psychotherapy treatment summary"-- I've recently hear two different guesses as to what constitutes a psychotherapy treatment summary...does anyone know exactly? otherwise i'm going to go with a treatment plan

Hi member2222- It is usually recommended in these situations to contact the site directly. I would send the TD a quick email and ask if it were me! Good luck!

One site asks for 2 integrated assessment reports and 1 "psychotherapy treatment summary"-- I've recently hear two different guesses as to what constitutes a psychotherapy treatment summary...does anyone know exactly? otherwise i'm going to go with a treatment plan

Some of my sites specified that they wanted a treatment summary and one meant anything from an intake to a quarterly review to a termination, while the other meant a termination from a conceptual point, kind of an overview of the treatment. I hope APPIC doesn't allow sites to request such stuff next year, it's just a pain.

Whenever I've done a "treatment summary" it's been at the end of treatment and it's basically what it sounds like; a summary of the presenting problem, the goals that were a part of the treatment plan, the interventions, and what goals the client did and did not complete. I'd definitely ask the TD of the site asking for that to specify if that's what they want or if they want a treatment plan.

Hello!

Does anyone know when we can expect to hear back regarding whether we will be offered an interview? I imagine we get a call if we do get an interview and a letter if not, so we probably find out sooner if we DO get an interview?

Thanks!
Kelly

Not necessarily. This is discussed earlier in this thread, if you want more information. Mid-November is pretty early for notification and some sites wait until December 15th.

Just wanted to update everyone on my situation, APPIC finally fixed my error, and I was able to pay for 5 sites today (3 of which were due yesterday, but thankfully, all 3 told me they were extending their application deadline to tomorrow).

Again, it's been a rollercoaster, but I'm glad to be able to move on to the next 4 applications' cover letters with deadlines in several weeks. 🙂

Congrats! Glad everything finally got worked out.

Good! Glad to hear you got things resolved. Hopefully things will go a bit smoother with your next batch of applications you try to submit!🙂

I get to take a break from cover letters for a few days as midweek is busy for me between work and school responsibilities. I will be back at it over the weekend working on some more cover letters though. Night SDNers...😴

Glad to hear the technical problems are being resolved and people are able to get their apps in! I submitted the bulk of my apps last week before the madness (thankfully), but still have some more to submit that are due around Nov 14. Hopefully all the issues will stay fixed.

Good luck, everyone! Now, we wait.... 😉

Hello everyone! I am re-joining the site this year as someone who did not match last year. After the anxiety last year of gearing up during the application phase, waiting and obsessively checking emails throughout November and December, spending thousands of dollars to travel for interviews, counting down to match day, and then not matching.... I told myself to hold out checking the forum until now. However, I went to the APA conference this year, made multiple improvements (I believe... based on the internship series) to my essays and cover letters, gotten farther with my dissertation, and been accruing lots of hours at a completely different type of training site to broaden my experiences. I'm feeling refreshed and ready to go again this year and hope to be chatting every day here on the forum! I wish everyone the best and from what I have read about concerns so far, don't worry about forgetting to submit a supplemental and having to email it, or any kind of APPIC issues. Training directors are human and understanding in the majority of cases, and if not, you don't want to go to that site anyway! Best of luck!

Do you remember what page that was on? I tried to find it but must have missed it... Thanks!

Are internships in Pediatric or Child Clinical Psychology as competitive as I think they are? I get the feeling as I'm reading these brochures that these places are more out of my league than I thought, but I can't really gauge what they're looking for in applicants.

Hi all

I submitted 7 applications this week (5 left to go)!!! Here is my question (with a brief background):

I am a fourth year in a clinical phd program, and I am on my advanced practicum. For this year and last year, I have been at the same site, but my supervisor changed in July. For my APPI, I requested letters from all 3 supervisors, plus 2 research mentors, and my current supervisor forgot to submit her letter. I figured that this was ok, didn't send her a reminder, and just used the letters from my first and second supervisors as well as at least one of the letters from my research mentors. As most sites only requested 3 letters, I didn't see a problem with this.

The other day, my current supervisor asked me when my first deadline was, and I said it had passed, and she was obviously embarrassed that she had forgotten to submit my letter. I told her it was ok-I had enough letters (plus I read all of them and they were pretty good). She indicated that sites would wonder why I didn't submit a letter from my current supervisor, and that it could work against me.

Has anyone heard of this happening? After talking with her, I felt anxious about the whole process, and have been second-guessing my decision to not remind her about her letter and use it. I can, of course, in the remaining letters.

Interesting point you raise. Just some thoughts from my perspective- curious to hear other's.

I have been at my current site where I am doing therapy for 2 months, so I thought it would be ridiculous to have someone write a letter who had known me for that short period of time. I also did not ask my therapy supervisor from last year because she was completely unengaged in anything to do with being my supervisor and didn't know anything about me. I did ask my current testing supervisor who has known me since May. I also asked other supervisors from last year from a secondary site where I worked and a supervisor from the year before. I did wonder if not asking my supervisor from last year would hurt me. I struggled with it for a good part of the spring before I left there, ultimately deciding against it.

I have to wonder if sites are paying that close of attention to when these individuals supervised us. And I also have wondered what some sites mean when they say they would like a letter from a "recent" supervisor. Does this mean current or within the last year or is two years ago okay?

When we have had some local TDs from accredited internships come and talk to our program they have really downplayed the role of LORs in this whole process. They said they all say the same thing- we are all wonderful. They more worry when LORs consist of "faint praise." They also told us they don't care about hours- as long as you have their minimum required. Anyway, I am rambling, but I guess from my perspective I see LORs as one piece of a lot of materials we are turning in. Again, I don't know how closely they pay attention to the details such as how long ago that person supervised us and whether we have one from a current sup.

If I was you I would probably just let it go. It doesn't sound like that big of a deal given that one of you LORs was supervising you through part of the summer. I also totally relate to the anxiety. There does feel like there are major parts of this process that are out of our control-it makes sense to want to try to grab onto those parts that we think we do have control over, like who writes our letters.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! Only you can really decide if you want to send her an email and ask her to go ahead and write a letter.

ps Congrats on submitting over half so far! I am pretty much in the same place.

I agree with the above poster. I did not ask my current supervisor for a letter because I only started at the end of August. I didn't think it would be fair to me or to my supervisor to have her write a letter after knowing me for such a short period of time, though I'm sure it would have been a good letter.

I agree with previous posters, and further, my own current supervisor, who is on our faculty and reviews apps for our program's accredited internship program, actually told the applicants from our program NOT to have current supervisors submit letters, as they haven't known you long enough to write meaningfully about your skills. She recommends previous supervisors who worked with you for many months or longer.

Thank you all! I appreciate your feedback, and won't stress about it any more! I most likely will get a letter from her (for political reasons) but probably won't end up using it. I agree, she can't really speak to my clinical skills, because she hasn't been my individual for very long and also because our site is in a period of major transition and I have been doing much more group therapy than individual.

Good luck to everyone on wrapping up applications! And thanks again, I appreciate it!

i was sort of in a situation like this too. i didn't ask my current supervisor for a letter bc i thought it was too soon. but then my DCT said i should get a letter from him since i am at a college counseling center and most of the sites i am applying to are college counseling centers. she said the college sites may find it odd that i am at a college site but have no letter from there...so i ended up asking him for one, and he wrote a pretty nice letter considering i have only been there a month. honestly though i think you'll be fine either way

Is anyone on here applying to the Hines VA? How are you handling the addendum to the cover letter? As a supplemental form?

sounds like everyone is making great progress so far. I have hit the point of being REALLY tired of working on these but continuing to keep going!

I would agree that it depends on whether the site you are currently training is similar to what you would like for internship. This is often the case in our program, as people tend to secure positions most closely aligned to their professional goals for their advanced practicums. I think one would do well to obtain a letter highlighting their performance within a setting similar to what they would like to continue in for internship.

So I'm experiencing a bit of anxiety regarding my apps, I sent them out on Sat to 19 sites. Yea!!! right? Well not really I found out that a friend who applied to one of the same sites as me received an email from the site stating they had received her app. Now I am worried that since I did not receive an email they didn't receive my app. I know this is a bit neurotic but it's making me worried that maybe my apps didn't go out or something. My APPI states that the 19 sites are completed but that still hasn't reduced my anxiety. Any thoughts from my fellow applicants?

This is akin to worrying if the post office is going to lose your app, no? Except, computers are infinitley more relaible than people. I would take comfort in that.

Thanks Rainbow and same to you! I also did not match last year, but I'm feeling much better about this years process because I'm applying to a fresh new list of sites that are much better matches for me and I've had tons of support from my TD and other faculty. We will rock this! 😀

Is anyone applying to a VA that requires the OF612 form? I am still waiting hear back from a TD about this form, as the site brochure lists this as a requirement; however, after clicking the provided link, I am directed to a page stating that OF612 is "obsolete."

I'm not even applying this year, and all of these glitches are causing me irritation.

Now I don't even want to apply next year.

I think that I shall quit while I'm ahead.

Problem solved. :meanie:

WHEW! What a relief!

GOOD LUCK everyone! :luck:

Hey All-
14 apps in and done.
Last friday PM I submitted my last 6 or so applications (for due dates 11/4/11 and beyond) and this AM I got an email thanking me for my application. Is this normal, because I certainly havent read anything about this before. I've read about thank you letters after invites, though.

Should I reply and just say I'm really interested in their program and look forward to meeting them? Or just that I am very interested in their program? I mean, I already said that in the cover letter. Basically, I'm a little surprised and unsure of what to write now.

I wouldn't respond, I'm sure it's a form e-mail, I received at least one of those so far. No harm really, I'm sure, but might be annoying if all the applicants to that site did it.

So, in other news, all of my apps are now officially in! Hooray! More of a relief than excitement - the last few letters were painful to write because I am just so fatigued with this part of the process. If I had it to do over again (note for next year's crop), I would try to write them all at the same time. The 2 days or so I spent writing all the November 1 letters went very fast, and the ones after that date r-e-a-l-l-y dragged.

So, half of my sites listed their interview dates and half did not. I'm assuming these things work themselves out, but it's definitely making me anxious wondering about possible conflicts and how best to schedule those interviews I'm fortunate enough to receive. I'm trying to just have faith that it will work out somehow. Some of my sites asked me to identify preferred dates to interview - anyone know if that means anything at all (like they might save you a space on your first preferred date) or if it is still just a free-for-all, first-come-first-served? If the latter, what's the point of listing a preference?
