2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Received a personalized email on 12/2 (Dear my name) to interview at UMass Amherst Center for Counseling and Psychological Health.

Received non-personalized rejections (Dear Applicant) from University of Delaware Counseling Center on 12/2 and also from University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center.

Good luck to all!

I got a personalized email invitation from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio today (Sat 12/3). Wasn't expecting that on a Saturday...especially since I just submitted my application on 12/1! Dates offered are Dec 12 & 14, Jan 4 & 9. :xf:

If anyone has any first- or second-hand info about this site, please personal message me. It's a great location for me, but I don't know anyone who's ever applied, interviewed, or done internship here.

Hi,

I was curious about when you applied to Upenn...also did they provide a list of dates? Congrats on the interview!
I applied to UPenn on Nov. 1st. I think they are interviewing on Fridays at 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30. Each interview is approx. 3 hours and you spend an hour with a current intern for a tour, then a half hour with two psychologists and then an hour with the Training Director. I actually just came back from their interview and it was very friendly and seemed relaxed.

Hi everyone, even though last week was a slow one for me (10 down, only 15 left to go!), I just want to thank people again for the updates, which have been super helpful... AND I thought I'd give a shout out to all those lurkers in my program who totally read this site but don't post 😀 😀 😀

No one else knows our nicknames, but you know who you are!!! Luscious J, Curly C, Heavy Q, Rondo, Lingding, Super B, Da Phobic, Mallrat, Socks Man, Island Time, Double Dip, Wafflesaurus, H Totes, and of course Diamond R.

I love all these kids and I KNOW that degree is totally going to happen next year! 😍

Thanks for the reply about UMDNJ. Looks like I am probably not going to get an invite there, which is sad because it was one of my top choices. 🙁 Good luck on your interview there! I like Ethan Allen/Lincoln Hills a lot too, so I hope we both hear some good news from them soon!

I am also curious if anyone has heard from the St. Louis Psychology Internship Consortium. I'm starting to worry I am going to get rejected from nearly all my sites!
I was under the impression that Ethan Allen was closing. I could have sworn information about this came out in MATCH news as well?

"Additional Information on the State of Wisconsin Budget
Like many state governments, the state of Wisconsin has a significant budget deficit. In addition, there has been a significant decline in the number of youth placed in Division of Juvenile Corrections facilities. This, unfortunately, makes complete reassurance that the internship at Ethan Allen School for 2011-2012 will be operating impossible to provide at this point. Due to the decreasing population in the Division of Juvenile Corrections the Secretary of the Department recently indicated that in the next budget cycle it will be recommended that one juvenile institution be closed. We expect that if any issues related to this arise, they will be resolved prior to the APPIC Match. Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding this issue. Our internship has been around for a long time, but it is important for us to communicate with prospective interns the possibility it could not be in operation for 2011-2012." - taken from Ethan Allen pdf from APPIC info.

Same here, I do juvenile work but you can't find it very much! Where else have you applied? Did you apply to Wisconsin Department of Corrections? Some people have heard, but I haven't 🙁 I'm also waiting for Mendota Mental Health...
Received bcc'd mass email for invitation to interview from Wisconsin DOC (12/1, 5:30pm)
Still waiting for Mendota (but their deadline states 12/13, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed)...
Good luck!

received a rejection this afternoon from the Univ. of Wisconsin health psych track via personalized e-mail.
Same here (11/28)! It was a stretch for me, so I wasn't totally surprised, but still a little disappointed.

Hi!
Does anyone know anything about Indiana University School of Medicine? Anyone else apply?

I also applied and I haven't heard anything. If invited, I'm assuming/hoping we'll get the interview date we requested in the supplemental materials (ie, interview date preference form) we submitted with our applications. Keeping my fingers crossed for Jan 13 :xf:

Good luck to you, too! :luck:

It would be WONDERFUL if someone could update the list... just a thought! Thanks!

Hi, could you point out any sites I'm missing from my last list from yesterday? I had updated that list to actually be up-to-date to Cici's post with the Canadian sites. I did not see any posts after that and before yours that had updated sites information. Thanks.

Has anyone still not heard one way or another from St Luke's/Roosevelt (NYC) - child track? Has anyone received a rejection from this site yet?

Many thanks to all who are posting interview info! I though I would follow suit. Received telephone invite to interview at Pine Grove Treatment Center. Good luck all!

For those who have already had interviews this season or have gone in previous years, does it seems like there are other reasonable options for women besides a traditional business suit? I understand suits are the norm and the safest bet, but a hospital is not a corporate environment where everyone interviewing us also will be wearing suits. Men tend to have more limited options in general, but I would think there might be the possibility for a little more leeway for women here, such as a dress with a jacket or sweater, or sweater set and trousers. Thoughts?

Interviews - St. Luke's - email (had it, they were super nice), Columbia - phone call (had it - doubt I'll get a second interview...), Jacobi - phone call, South Shore Mental Health, Quinsy MA - email.

Thank you all for the useful updates!

Yes. You can go more casual and survive. I had a couple of interviews with other people - one girl was wearing a simple black dress, the soft kind. Another was waring a fancy button up shirt and dressy pants with dressy shoes. In another case a woman was wearing dressy pants and a simple shirt with a west-top with big collar (the drippy kind). She looked nice.
🙂

What Columbia site is this - CUMC/NewYork Presbyterian/New York State Psychiatric Institute? If so, I didn't realize there were phone interviews too? Was this a screening interview? In any event, congrats on the interviews so far, hope they went well!

I just wrote above that I got a call from Jacobi and an email from South Shore Quincy, MA.

Thanks for sharing your experiences 🙂 Must feel nice to have some interviews under your belt already!

It's a HUGE relief. As you might imagine that I spent my time since sending the applications being 100% sure NO ONE WILL EVER GRANT ME AN INTERVIEW. And I will die Ph.D-less and lonely.

Feel free to ask me questions. If you're interviewing where I did.

The faculty at my program all STRONGLY encourage wearing a suit unless the site indicates otherwise. And many of them have been part of intern selection committees in the past.

Besides, we've come this far. It seems like a big risk to take at this stage in the process.

CUMC/NewYork Presbyterian/New York State Psychiatric Institute, adult, and the notification was by phone. The interview itself was at their outpatient clinic with one of their post-docs.

Hi, I think it's a matter of opinion really and what you would feel super confident in. You have to FEEL GOOD in what you are wearing...all the way down to your shoes!

Thus far I have been to two hospital interviews in Manhattan, NY, and everyone was wearing a suit. Pant or skirt suits, actually all the women were wearing a black suit-and one pin striped! I wore a gray or soft patterned gray. I plan on wearing a skirt suit for my next one (weather permitting).

Its up to you...but I was told to wear a suit. Besides its better to be overdressed than underdressed...this of course is my opinion but i really believe if you don't feel comfortable in a suit then don't wear it and wear something that you will!

Good luck!

I have no idea given that I've never interviewed for internship before. I can, however, share that the DCT at my program explicitly told us to wear suits (men and women). I'm going with that because I don't want to risk it. 🙂

I third the idea of wearing a suit. Just because you're in a suit (pants or skirt variety) doesn't mean you can't be have a piece or two that are unique. My grad program recommends wearing suits but there's nothing saying that you can't mix and match a bit (e.g., tweed jacket and solid slacks with a white blouse). At the end of the day, though, you need to be comfortable and "own" what you're wearing.

I currently work there and know that they have not sent out invites/rejections to a ton of people. they do it rolling...

Just thought to let people know that Kings County Hospital listed their end date for interview calls as December 31st. Later than most sites.

Surely! U of Wisconsin, Madison Counseling Center, Northwestern College Counseling Center, and University of Illinois Counseling Center (I think this gives away the type of sites I applied too!)
Would you mind sharing what information you received from U of Wisconsin Counseling Center. Was it an invitation for interview?

Yes, I guess... I applied to both and only heard from Jacobi at this point. The interview is in January, so there's plenty of time still. I have not heard from NCB. I hope I get an interview in both.

Just wanted to mention about possible interview clothing sale.

NY & Company is having a B1G1 75% off. I found 4 jackets for $75 each, so

1 - $75
2 - $19
3 - $75
4 - $19

I then added a pair of shoes for $13.

Added code 3319 for $100 off $200, and I did this so that I get free shipping (since $100 + gets free shipping).

So, each jacket ends up being $25ish dollars or so, which I think is a great deal.

I also got 4 pair of pants for $40 each ($50 for 2). i got a pair of argyle sweaters ($50), and 2 $20 dress pants, and just added a $10 accessory to make it to $200 then took off $100.

So, yes, I spent $200 on clothes, but given how much professional clothes I was getting, it was a great deal; 4 jackets, 6 pants, 2 sweaters, a pair of shoes, and a necklace.

Yea, an interview for both programs would be ideal. Was it a personalized email? Good luck!

I posted that info awhile ago. . . those emails were confirmations of receiving my application. I have yet to hear from U of W since. I do not believe the counseling center has sent out invites or rejects yet.

I just got on and am trying to catch up while learning the nuances... thanks for the response! 🙂

I just wrote above that I got a call from Jacobi and an email from South Shore Quincy, MA.

Thanks for contributing, I've added those sites, but it would be great if you could let us know the dates of notification. Thanks!

Just a question about interview attire: do I have to wear a skirt / dress, or would a pantsuit be appropriate as well? It's January and I'll be interviewing at Canadian sites, where the weather will be cold......and I'm just more comfortable in pants in general.......

I think the only complaint I've ever heard about are those "capri" like pants. Wearing full-length pants are fine I think as long as they are the appropriate length (i.e. if you wear boot-cut pants, wear heels/boots. It doesn't look good to have a lot of fabric extend past the ankles.)

Hey guys! How are you all handling luggage? I'm thinking carry on garment bag with suit and shirt in it, heels and jewelry in backpack, and the other clothes for the days I'm there in a suitcase I'll check. That way if the suitcase is lost I wont lose anything essential for the interview. Thoughts? Tips?
