2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was born and raised in west Philadelphia. One day, when I was out playing basketball in my particularly bad neighborhood, I got in a scuffle with two gentlemen. My mother became frightened on my behalf, and sent me to southern California to live with my aunt and uncle in Bel Air. I had the privilege of sitting in first class and they even served me orange juice in vesicle typically reserved for champagne. When the taxi picked me up from the airport, it seemed a little strange, and I remember a particularly bad smell. Nevertheless, by the time I arrived at my aunt and uncle's house, I knew I was home. I was sure that several seasons...ooops, I mean years...of hilarious hijinks would ensue.

I love that!

Where were you when I needed you during my interview?!

The story I told... The interviewer didn't know if she should commit me to her inpatient as a patient rather than an intern right there and then...

🙂

Oh well. I can post some more sane questions I have been asked....

Can I just answer: "I don't plan to tell you three things that I don't want you to know about me. Or any things, for that matter."? or "Well, one of them is what I think of that question. Another is what I think of your humanity for asking it." 😛 lol
priceless! talk about thinking on your feet 🙂

Regarding UC Davis CAARE.. Was it a mass rejection email (like it was a generic email that could've been sent to many applicants) or personalized? Still waiting to hear from them...

Well . . . I personally think that most rejections so far have been "generic", but my Davis rejection had my name and email. My friend got rejected yesterday and I got rejected today, so it seems they're coming in waves. Good luck!

Thanks---fingers crossed, best of luck to you too!

Has anyone received a rejection from UW SOM - SCH? I know some (all?) invites have gone out, but I'm not ready to give up all hope. Best wishes to all!

Is it really true that rejections go out first. I have seen that some of the sites I applied to have already notified people with interviews, however, have not heard from them yet. Should i brace myself for a rejections? :scared:

I emailed the site I was talking about earlier (thanks for the advice!!) and got a reply inviting me for an interview to the Calgary Residency 🙂

Got rejected today and it was personalized-my email and name. Hope this helps and good luck

I'm too lazy to go back and find the quotes, but you guys totally lightened my work-filled night, haha! RE: Weight/ATM password, etc. and Fresh Prince of Bellaire anecdote... I may have to use such brilliant answers in my interviews... please don't mind that I will be passing them off entirely as my own. 😛

Hello fellow obsessive SDN checkers,

I'm wondering if anyone has heard (either way) from:
UW School of Medicine - general adult psychiatry track :xf:
Charleston Consortium - general & neuropsych tracks :xf:

?????????????????

Thanks.

i'm in the same boat; i haven't heard anything from UW SOM- child so i'm not sure what that means...can't wait til the 15th!

I really appreciate the support from everyone!!! (Cervello, Duck Duck Goose, Member888, marvelgrrl, Therapist4Chnge, pinkasaurus, and also some of the PMs that I received) Cervello and Therapist4Chnge, I remember seeing you guys on here last year. It means a lot to know that there are others going through their own difficulties with this process and that we can all be supportive of each other. I try to offer words of comfort and congratulations whenever I can. It really is uplifting and helpful to know others are responsive to the unique situations of each individual here. Again, I really appreciate everything, and I am also thankful for everyone else who posts information on here, sharing where they did or didn't get interviews, what things people are worrying about, helpful information about interviews or getting to interviews, etc! 😍

I was afraid that some of you would react this way, and sorry to annoy/bore you with things you do not care to read about on this forum. I remember that this was a supportive place for many members last year when I was first applying, and have also seen some supportive things that people have said to each other on here so far this year. Last year I got the majority of my support from my cohort at school as we were all going through this together, but now that the majority of them have gone off to internship and even for those of us who did not, we are not at school anymore and don't see each other so... I took a chance and turned to this group for support and I was very grateful to the responses that I got.

Please don't feel this way (I realize what a ridiculous thing this is to say from one almost-psychologist to another). Countless people are feeling like you are, and we all know how important support is at times like this. I am mostly a lurker, but I know last year, when I was doing this process for my second time, I was on here a lot because it was nice to read about other people going through the same thing as I was, trying to keep optimistic. It was hard because I felt I needed to pull away from my grad school colleagues because I was so hard on myself for not matching the year before, I didn't want to have to tell another slew of people about how stressful it was the second time around.

From one internet stranger to another, I'm sending you lots of hugs and support.

Mass email rejection from UChicago (expected since invites were given out a while back). Interviewed there last year. That's never a good sign right? Of my top 3 sites from last year, this year I got rejected from #1 and #2 and re-invited for interview for #3. I do know that some places don't interview the same person twice as a rule but that's definitely not the case everywhere.

Of my top two sites the first time I applied, I got rejected for a second interview at one and matched at the other one... so you never know!

Does anyone have any experience with asking why their application was rejected? How they went about asking - calling, emailing training director? And if they received a response with specifics - type of experience, program type, number of intervention/assessment hours, etc.?

I emailed a bit after match day for one that specifically said they were willing to provide feedback, and they were actually pretty specific- e.g., lack of experience with a certain population.

Has anyone heard from the following:

Cal State, Northridge CC
Metropolitan State College of Denver
Purdue University CC
University of Maine CC
Towson University CC
Univ of North Carolina-Chapel Hill CC
Ohio State University CC
Temple University CC
Clemson University CC
University of Washington CC (Seattle)
University of Connecticut

Have only heard from 4 sites...getting ancy to say the least!

No word from Purdue. Their response date is later than usual (Dec 28)

Anyone gotten interviews at Johns Hopkins CC? I saw some rejections previously, but didn't see anyone list an invite. For now I might cross them off my list - the ivys seem to be getting a HUGE number of apps this year, even more than in past years!

Same here - I applied to Johns Hopkins and have not heard anything, but did see that rejections were mentioned a few days ago... Trying to stay hopeful! :xf:
Good luck!

Thanks.

I have heard from neither of these sites (and I applied to the general track at both)!

Woke up to an e-mail rejection from FMC Lexington...here's to better news the rest of the day.

I feel like since it's the last day of this week all sites should buckle and let me know if they're into interviewing me or not. The 15th looks miles away....

Thanks for sharing! Best of luck to you too🙂👍

Slow morning.... Hoping to hear back from my 7 sites remaining sooner rather than later! I need to force myself back to grading...

I'm having a hard time focusing on my closing notes that I need to write up before the holidays. I really hope there is some good news coming for all of us today! :xf:

3 invites, 2 rejections... I NEED TO HEAR FROM MY OTHER 11 SITES ALREADY! :help:

I know people received both invites and rejections from U.Penn CC yesterday- anybody NOT heard anything? I applied but haven't heard either way.... Thanks!!!

Good luck today, everyone... Here's to hoping for a more positive day!

Just got official rejection from Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC). It was mass email, directed at "Dear Applicant."

Expected this as the acceptances went out a week ago, but still was holding out hope.

They had the usual "we had record number of applicants...". How sad that such phrases are now "usual."

Seemed mass email interview to Emory University CC! YAY. 🙂

Also rejection from University of Maryland CC.

What a day!

One of my sites (The Youth Opportunity Center) has their notification date listed as January 2nd in the directory. However, their brochue says they notify by December 15th. Does anyone here know anything about this site and when they actually notify?

Side note: it is really frustrating when information in the directory conflicts with the information in the brochures/on the website! That happened for several of my sites regarding their application due dates.

Rejection, email, with my name - Probably the best "fit" of the sites that I applied to, even better than the site where I'm interviewing

9 rejections (45%), 1 interview (5%), 10 left (50%). Not a good fit for at least 5 of my remaining sites...

I wonder if I'll be the first person to not match two years in a row at my program (I don't know if it happened before... or if it'll happen this time, come on Phase II! 😛 ).

If they're an APA accredited site, it's almost definitely the 15th (there are VERY few consistent exceptions to this).

Just received a personalized email invite to Princeton House Behavioral Health!

I was a little worried since I know people had heard yesterday, but yay! They provided me with the interview date and time.

I've been checking this forum for years, but first time posting. I've seen that people have gotten rejections and invitations from the Milwaukee VA, but I haven't heard anything (I've checked all other folders in my e-mail, including Spam). I got my rejection from them before Thanksgiving last year, so I'm wondering why I haven't heard anything yet.

I'm doing this for the second year. Only got two interviews last year. I'm up to four interviews and two possible open houses. Still waiting to hear from 11 sites. This process is so rough!!

Also rejection from Townson U CC. Yuck day. Probably also rejection from UVA and Colorado State since others heard days ago and I haven't heard anything.

Just got an interview at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY!! Interviews are held between Jan 3-17th. It was a mass email I think.

I have also not heard from University of Washington School of Medicine (general track).
