2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to 14 sites (15 tracks), 4 interviews so far, 1 rejection, and 10 to hear from.

In keeping with the PhD/PsyD discussion earlier. I applied to a number of different VA's with no VA experience, yet three of my four interviews are at VA sites. I have very strong assessment background and have pretty decent research experience, so I'm wondering if that's why I seem to be receiving invitations with them.

Also - a collegue of mine has received a rejection from the North Texas VA, but I have not, so I'm hopeful for that site still.

Congrats on your interview! Did your email come tonight, or was it earlier today?

I got it early today (In the 2:00 hour, PST), but it was personalized, and my last name is at the beginning of the alphabet. It looks like somebody else just posted about getting one more recently.

Thanks for your response! Hopefully I'll hear from them soon too! :xf:

INDIANA BASKETBALL!!!! HOOSIERS!!!

now back to the anxiety of the damn internship process!

This is a major problem in our field. I come from a PsyD program (cohort under 10 with tuition waiver and funding) but every where I go, I feel I have to defend my degree. I had to be very careful with the sites I applied to because so many programs equate "PsyD" with subpar training.

Once you get out in the real world, it is more about your skills....and less about where you went to school. You still need a strong CV, but that is needed no matter where you went to school.

Not to spook anyone, but we are going through apps at my site right now and some ppl are not being interviewed because of the rep of their program. I am by no means at a ivy or anything close either. But, yea, if you have a cohort of 80, 90 ppl or whatever, its kind of an automatic cut at our site.

I also know that some sites have had bad experiences with interns from different programs and then they tend to blackball that program. I'm in a Ph.D. program, but we have one site that we're discouraged from applying to because they had a previous bad experience with one of our interns and we are no longer welcomed at that location. However, we also have other sites that the opposite is true, where we are encouraged by faculty to apply because we have a good reputation at their site and we often get interviews. I think your program can definately help or hurt you in this process, just hopefully it's not simply based on the initials that will be after your name...

...thus my disclaimer: "Once you get out in the real world".

When I reviewed applications, I always paid attention to:
-The university
-The GPA (if <3.5)
-Publications/Presentations
-EBT training

I think there are many reasons that people get selected to interview/rejected. Previous experience is definitely something beyond our control - but good to be aware of! Also, a good thing to keep in mind when we are completing an internship - to do our best so we potentially open another door for future students from our program. However, I also think if your credentials, experience, etc. are stellar programs may make an exception for you - this has been my experience many times...

Similarly, there are reasons why we chose one type of program over another. I knew someone who was a professor/psychologist, PsyD, and excellent researcher - he saw his degree as a means to an end (be able to practice) and didn't care whether it was PhD or PsyD, however, the PsyD was a choice of convenience for him... he was obviously an exception as most people looking to do research would opt for a PhD. When we are all matched and graduate we will all potentially be able to do the same things... but yes, there will be distinction among us regardless of the string of letters behind our names such as our work ethic, ability to work with others, a special 'gift' to work with a particular population, or our ability to develop new interventions, cutting edge research, etc.

Here's to good luck in matching this year and in our future professional career paths! And when we are in a position to make a difference with what is wrong with the system - we remember what it's really like out here for students...

Here here!

I come from a Psy.D. program. The research we do for our dissertation is sometimes more intense than some Ph.D.'s student. Depends on topic and advisers.

We have some sites that love working with us and others that never interview us. Unclear why.

You can see the stats in the APPIC directory that will show you how many Psy.D. vs. Ph.D. student were accepted in prior years.

And too bad for one intern that ruins the reputation of a whole program. That is just a shame.

Snail mail rejection today. :lame:

I applied to 14 sites (15 tracks), 4 interviews so far, 1 rejection, and 10 to hear from.

In keeping with the PhD/PsyD discussion earlier. I applied to a number of different VA's with no VA experience, yet three of my four interviews are at VA sites. I have very strong assessment background and have pretty decent research experience, so I'm wondering if that's why I seem to be receiving invitations with them.

Also - a collegue of mine has received a rejection from the North Texas VA, but I have not, so I'm hopeful for that site still.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I am in a similar situation. All of my interviews are at VAs, and I have yet to get an interview at a UCC. I have no VA experience, but have worked at my university's counseling center for 3 semesters. Coming from a Counseling Psych program, I have received various messages from peers and even my program that "we" are more competitive at UCCs. However, also like you, I have a lot of assessment experience. In the end I think, and hope, it is more about your clinical experiences and skills with the population you decide to work with than the letters after your name or the program type.

Good luck with your remaining sites kds!! You are gonna have a busy week! 😀

I just wanted to voice my support for those who aren't having much luck with interviews. It's hard to know exactly what sites are looking for with some of this. I think that in addition to the rep of your program and publications/minimum GPA/oreintation, your practicum experiences are a huge factor. If you have a progression that fits within a good rationale for why you are applying to a given site, you're going to have a much better chance of getting an offer. Also, if your practica have been at well-known sites that helps. I did all of my practica at one of the top VAs in the country, and I have had very good luck with applying to other VA sites (not so with medical centers though).

There is obviously a large component of luck in the process, but I think that the above sets you up well to get interview offers.

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has heard from any of the following sites:

Saint Elizabeths Hospital
Fulton State Hospital
Wyoming State Hospital
VA Central Iowa Healthcare System
Louis Stokes Cleveland DVA Medical Center
Captain James A Lovell Federal Healthcare Center

Thanks! Good luck to all of you!

I

In a moment of panic after receiving several rejections, I applied to a non-APA accredited site that was a really great fit. It seems like a great program, they are in California and have been operating since the early seventies. Apparently, they are in the process of getting accredited, but probably won't be for the 2012-13 training year. I am just not sure what to do-do I interview and rank them, or hold out for my one apa site (an ivy league). Any suggestions?

I think APA accreditation is overrated. You only need an APA accredited internship if you want to work for the government or live in a state that still requires one for licensure.

Last year I only applied to APA accredited sites and I did not match. I wish I had been more open-minded about accreditation, especially since there were so many places I felt were a good fit with my goals that weren't accredited.

So, if your school allows you to apply to non-accredited sites, I say go for it! We have all worked too hard to limit ourselves in this way; let's get this internship done and get licensed already!

Also, I've been told by several people (TDs and previous applicants) that how much progress you've made toward completing your dissertation can be important as some sites would prefer you not be distracted/busy with that while you are on internship. In past years several extremely qualified applicants from our program applied immediately after proposing their dissertation (a prereq at our university) and did not receive many invitations or match whereas others who were not expected to match but had completed data collection did. Moreover, those who did not match the previous year matched to some very prestigious and competitive internships the next year after they had completed data collection. Yet another factor to throw into the mix along with luck and everything else:scared:.

Eh, not quite...

I think you're forgetting that it rules you out of many, many post-docs too though. Generally, its a big headache in mutiple areas, starting with the post-doc search, but extending on into things like licensing, boarding, jobs eligibility, etc. I agree with the sentiment though, its silly, given the massive imbalance that exists now, that APA accreditation is still expected for the vast majority of formal post-doc offerings.

Careful, there are some other restrictions that can pop up later. Some board certifications are not possible unless you went to an APA accredited internship (e.g., neuropsych boards require it). Additionally, if there is any chance you may move to another state (and who can say what the future holds) you may not be able to transfer your license/get licensed if you did not attend an accredited internship.
Personally, if I didn't want to eventually be board certified I would apply to my local, non-accredited internship in a heartbeat!

You did all of your practica at one site? We aren't even allowed to do that in my program. Now I wonder if anyone looks at my CV and thinks "how come she only did 8mos to a year at each of these?" Like maybe questioning whether I run away from sites or don't get along well enough to stay at a site etc... but two of my sites (one of them very prestigious) hired me for research or testing after I finished so that's definitely not the case, our program just pushes for multiple experiences... hmmm, now you got me thinking about ANOTHER reason maybe I'm not getting interviews... there really is no way to know what sites are looking for! I can't believe there are so many people with multiple VA interviews and no VA experience. We were always told there is no way a VA would interview applicants who have no VA experience! I got denied from two (even though I have a lot of assessment experience like others on this site are saying) even with experience this year (for the first time) with a military population. Again, I guess there is no way to know exactly what sites are basing their decisions on...

I have to agree that I dont think that doing all ones practica at one site is wise at all (and I'm not sure how that would be allowed), even if one is sure they want to be a VA psychologist in the future. I'm sure Huxwell had good reasons, but we prob dont want to encourage that kind of thing, even if its at a good place and has happened to serve him/her well.

Mass email rejection from Penn Hospital (12/11). Super bummed about this one.

Email invite to Pennsylvania Hospital!

For those who are unsure where they stand with invitations that have gone out, so far all of my invitations to interview have been received after people posted them here. So you never know!

PS- Sorry to the above poster..good luck with your other sites.

7 more sites to go!

I don't think that this is true at all. My program, a highly prestigious Ph.D. program, has had all our students due their practica at a site associated with our university for many years. Our grads receive excellent training, and generally do pretty well with internships, postdocs, and jobs.

I simply meant that, obviously, this going to reduce breadth of training/exposure, and that's never a great thing. Doesn't mean its always going to limit one in the internship match, but its just not something I would really advocate...at least for someone who wants a clinical career.

For example, the in-house university psychology clinic is great training with close supervision, but generally, is not at all reflective of the the real (clinical) world. It would be nice if it was, but its not. Trust me. I would encouraging anyone who wants to be a clinician to gain exposure in multiple settings, especially integrated care medical settings, since that's where psychology is increasingly headed.

Just a little tip for everyone regarding the numerous expenses relating to the internship process (I apologize if this is common knowledge) : make sure you save all your receipts (travel, hotel, food, application expenses, etc) as almost all of them are tax deductible, assuming our school requires us to get an internship to fulfill educative requirements for higher education (that should be a yes for all). Not to mention, this tax benefit also includes daily travel to work/school and many other
activities we do everyday in our programs, but that's for another discussion.

Anything to help save money right?

Anyone else is dreading tomorrow and thinks that it may only bring depressing news?

I have a few sites that already sent out invites but no rejections (Lincoln and Montefiore in the Bronx). I am trying to be hopeful and believe that they may still invite me but I suspect that my inbox will be filled with "sorry to inform you that application is no longer under consideration..."

I also have a couple of sites that sent both invites and rejections and I did not hear from...

I hate waiting.

I am kind of dreading it, but I also am tired of being in the dark with this whole process! Like you, I have a few sites that have already sent out interview invites (St. Louis Consortium, UMDNJ Piscataway and Newark), and I am prepared for bad news from them. I still have several sites to hear from, including my top choice and the site in my hometown! I will be at my prac in a prison all day tomorrow, so I will not have access to my phone or e-mail. I hope I don't come out to my car at the end of the day to a wave of bad news!

Good luck to you!

In response to Erg923 and OvertheRainbow: Just to clarify, my university starts everyone at a department clinic to learn ESTs for anxiety/mood disorders. After that, you're on your own, and I decided to do 2 years on different rotations at an awesome VA because I knew I wanted a VA position for internship/postdoc (so "all" my practica is not exactly accurate). This was a good choice for me because of my goals, but if someone was not locked into a VA internship, I would not recommend it. This has been borne out in my results, as I have been offered an interview at the VAs in Boston, Baltimore, Seattle, American Lake, and Palo Alto (with zero VA rejections); I've also been rejected from every medical school/hospital I've applied to. Basically, I've opted to specialize in VA/military.

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has heard from any of the following sites:

Saint Elizabeths Hospital
Fulton State Hospital
Wyoming State Hospital
VA Central Iowa Healthcare System
Louis Stokes Cleveland DVA Medical Center
Captain James A Lovell Federal Healthcare Center

Thanks! Good luck to all of you!

VA Central Iowa sent out some invitations back on November 29th. I have not heard anything about the Cleveland VA...

I'll second or third that! I know it's hard trying to stay positive and I keep fluctuating between being certain that sites that invited my colleagues last week (or two weeks ago) will send rejections out on the 15th--and, as others have pointed out, being hopeful that they still might contact me. Hang in there:xf::xf::xf::xf:
