2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"Dear Applicant" e-mail indicating that GHSU/CNVAMC has reviewed applications, filled all interview slots, and placed me on a wait list in the event that they receive a cancellation. If no further notice from the site by Jan 15, then application is no longer under consideration for an internship position.

Personalized e-mail invited to Northport VAMC. Various dates in January offered.

Just got a mass email rejection for Baylor College of Medicine. I had applied to the Texas Children's and DePelchin tracks. Not a good morning so far!

Interview offer via personalized email 🙂 Dates are Jan 6, 9, 13.

Well I guess it's not the best of news, but maybe you can take it as a little bit of a boost that they liked you enough to put you on the list? I got a similar email from Kaiser San Diego and thought it was just "fluff", something they say to be nice. Maybe it is actually legitimate?

"We cannot offer you an interview, however, as we have filled our available interview appointments with applicants who (based upon their application materials) appear to offer a somewhat better "fit" with our program. We will, though, keep your application on file. Should we be unable to select an adequate number of potential interns for the national "Match", or have an unfilled position, we may contact you to see if you are still interested in being considered."

Anybody have an idea?

How is it that Duke University Medical Center still hasn't bothered to send out a single rejection, despite the fact that their interviews went out on Nov. 22?

I don't mean to call out just one site, since I know they're not the only ones pulling crap like this. But seriously, they can't possibly still be considering applications at this point, and I don't understand how sites justify waiting this long to let rejected applicants down. Is it just laziness? Given that I spent a good couple of hours writing their cover letter and applying to their program, don't I deserve the courtesy of an actual rejection?

Just got a phone call from Maimonides finalizing interview dates and schedule. He was super nice.

That's a good way to start this awful week!

Good luck everyone!

I thought that by scheduling myself a ton of clients this week at practicum I would keep myself busy and not be obsessed with waiting on emails and phone calls... but when two clients cancel before lunch time and don't give you any notes to write over the lunch break... all of a sudden I got three hours of nothing-to-do-but-be-anxious time... and no notifications, good or bad, to occupy my thoughts! Just obsessively checking this forum over and over!

I know. It's incredibly rude, actually. I tell myself that I wouldn't want to intern at a site that pulls that crap, anyway. That seems to help lol or maybe im just being bitter ... who knows. I was pretty unaffected by this whole process up until now, but now im just annoyed with it (see my previous post)

Mass email invite with dates 1/12, 1/18, 1/26 and 2/1.

Congrats! I am still waiting to hear back from Manatee Glen despite writing the director an e-mail after the deadline...:xf:

Personalized, email rejection from Univ. North Carolina Counseling Center in Charlotte.

I'm regretting applying to so many student counseling centers without having any experience with the population.

Mass rejection from FCC Terra Haute. Can I vent for a second?! How did I make the cut at at least 5 other FCCs ... that are accredited ... and that get over 200 apps, but Interview only 20-30 .. yet I'm rejected from a nonaccredited site that got 28 apps last year and interviewed 21. Really?! No offense meant to those who got it, but I find that frustrating! And reflective of how truly random his process is! Sorry ... Bitter. I have several interviews but that's my 3rd rejectionin a row and was my "safety" site!!! LOL ugh

This is so frustrating, especially when it isn't what you expected. My TD warned us that this could happen with safety sites. He said that they can tell if you are over qualified for their site and/or that their site would not be near the top of your list...but 5+ interviews at CCs! That's great.

I think some sites reject you if they think you are actually over-qualified for their site and likely to match somewhere else. Not sure if that helps, but our DCT told us that before we applied.

Hi all! So glad this part of the process is almost over!

I'm wondering if anyone who applied to the trauma track at Primary Children's Medical Center has heard from them. I was holding out hope that they were just waiting to send out invites to the trauma track until today given that they seemed to send out personalized invites for other tracks on Friday. However, since I didn't hear from them this morning, I'm beginning to doubt that this is the case. So if you applied to the trauma track and received an invite (or rejection), I would really appreciate hearing from you! Thanks!

I'm not having much luck either, and the majority of my experience has been in college counseling (2 out of 3 pracs). So who knows??

I know this wont help but I saw an interview with Melvin Williams (the Baltimore drug kingpin that inspired the Barksdale story-line on HBO's The Wire) where he said that FCC Terra Haute was the scariest place in the whole BOP system. And that MFs been in alot of of em too...

Remember that sites also have individual profiles that shape their sense of "fit" to their specific site; they also scan carefully (especially if application numbers are small enough you can read very closely) and may have a good sense about for whom they are a "safety". They want to spend their interview time with folks who really want to match with them. Unaccredited sites know they are considered second-best and so it is not entirely "random" when they decide not to interview students if application or essays or letters may indicate they have strong odds of Matching elsewhere and that the site can see would be a better fit there too. Sometimes they also know that some schools will actively discourage ranking them and so they will prefer to see students from programs that recognize that un-accredited does not mean inadequate. But it is still true that rejection is distressing and the current problem means everyone is getting large doses of this distress.

Rejections from Baylor (knew that one was coming) and LSU Health Sciences (infant/child track) this morning. Not exactly how I wanted to start out my Monday. Still waiting to hear from 3 sites.

Personalized invite from Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) counseling center. Dates are January 3, 4, 6, 9, 10.

Mass email invitation to University of Washington SOM behavioral medicine/neuropsychology track. Open house date is January 10th. With that, I have heard back from all of my sites! Good luck to everyone still waiting!

What made you want to apply CC's, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm all about helping the next generation so I would like to be able to give the next cohort some sound advice on this process.

Was this Baylor Menninger?

Just received this very short and somewhat odd email from the Black Hills VA:
"Dear Applicant,
Thank you for applying to the Black Hills Health Care System Predoctoral Internship Program. Even though we did not select you for an in-person interview we are still considering you for ranking."

Is this kind of thing unusual?

They typically don't require an on site interview and I am 10 months pregnant 🙂. I'm not able to travel for interviews that aren't local, so I applied to some CCs that are not local and was hoping for some luck.

I am waiting on this, too. I haven't noticed anyone posting about the trauma track, yet :scared:

Congratulations, your done with the this stage, press save and proceed!!!

Very nice, personalized email rejection today. No surprise since some offers went out last week. Would have been a fun place to visit though!!!!

Seems like the day is filled with good and bad news for everyone, here's to going for much much MUCH more good news

Interesting... I haven't heard anything like this from sites myself. If they are still planning to rank you, however, I guess they need to let you know so that you can rank them? I would have difficulty with the idea of possibly matching somewhere when I did not even get to meet any of the staff or learn more about the program though.

Received an interview invite to Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health via phone call. Interviews are Mondays in January.

Oh ok, wow, congrats! Makes sense, I hope you got some local ones.

This is one of the three I am waiting on... maybe since it is personalized mine will come later?? I have my doubts though... congratulations on your interview and thanks for the info!!!

A classmate received an interview invitation from the San Francisco VA last week, and it looks like they have sent out a few waves of rejections over the last few weeks. Has anyone else heard from them?

They do this every year. For them it is an assumed rejection from what I've been told.

Congrats! I am still waiting to hear back from Manatee Glen despite writing the director an e-mail after the deadline...:xf:

I got an email from Manatee Glens for an interview today (mass email), check your spam mail just in case!

I thought someone posted about the U of Louisville School of Med but I just got a personalized invitation to interview for the Child Clinical and Pediatric track.

Hope more good news is on the way! Hang in there everybody!

Fantastic and congratulations! Just wanted to make sure folks see this since someone posted way back that they were done offering interviews - guess that is not the case! This is one I am waiting on (it was the probable rejection to which I kept referring), so I am keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

So update on my status in light of this is that I have 6 rejections, 0 interviews, and 6 still waiting on... have heard back from 3/6 on what I need to do to improve and it seems very feasible but a little concerned that I might get all the experience they suggest and still not do well next year...

Still thinking about whether I want to wait and do this all again next year if I don't match OR if I'd rather do a non-accredited local internship and be done with it... but also still very much hoping that this week brings a bunch of interview invitations and I get matched in the end! Good luck to us all!

This does help! Didn't think of it that way... 🙂. Thanks!

Yikes! That kind of makes me feel better, but also intrigues me 🙂 I know they have the only Federal death row, which was my reason for justifying an nonaccredited site... So I guess you have to figure there are some real characters in there!

Remember that sites also have individual profiles that shape their sense of "fit" to their specific site; they also scan carefully (especially if application numbers are small enough you can read very closely) and may have a good sense about for whom they are a "safety". Rejection from Iowa State Counseling Center . . . 🙁 That's two rejections today.
