2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

Anyone heard from FMC Carswell or the Colorado Dept. of Corrections?

Just to chime in with my $0.02, I'm a fan of the generalist training followed by specialized postdoc. I've known since before my PhD that I wanted to specialize in forensics but I would have lost a LOT of valuable training had I not done a generalist PhD. I still had courses in forensic-specific stuff, but I don't believe that the PhD is the time to specialize.

That seems to be the prevailing opinion for most specialties. There have been a number of "Forensic Psychology" programs try and get APA-acred, but they typically get hung up on not providing enough generalist training. While I think students should get some exposure to speciality areas while in training (with more exposure coming in the 3rd and 4th years), people seem to think that starting earlier is better.

IMPORTANT: If you have not heard back from sites who have already sent invites/rejections, do yourself a favor and email the TDs even though the notification day is not over yet. I emailed two sites and apparently they typed my email address wrong, but they never received "undeliverable messages," so someone must have a gmail adress similar to mine. I don't have a strangely spelled name or anything, so I'm not sure what the TDs did wrong.

The overwhelming opinion is to wait until the deadline. Some sites received 300-400+ applications, so they may need all of their time to be able to review and respond to the applicants.

That sucks, hope that doesn't happen to me. People rarely spell my name correctly (usually switch the last two letters in my first name - Quyhn), so I'm hoping that actually makes the sender look more closely at spelling my name.

I would be tempted to buy a vowel...and probably stick it between the n and h. 😀

Anyone else still waiting to hear from Jerry Pettis/Loma Linda VA? My classmates have all heard one way or another, but I have not. Thanks and good luck everyone!!
Yes, I have heard nothing from Loma Linda

Clemson invite, yay!

"We at Clemson University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) feel very fortunate to have received a record number of internship applications this year, and so many of our applicants had outstanding qualifications. One of those applicants was you!"

I thought that was cute.

I got the same email 🙂, very excited for it. I read the first sentence though and instantly thought thought that it was a rejection (that's how most of my rejection letters so far have started). It's like the opposite side of the spectrum from the people who got a rejection e-mail with a subject line reading "such and such site internship interview".

So does Geisinger send rejections or not!? I am assuming I am rejected, but I just want to be able to cross it off the list. Argh.

Jesse Brown VA - rejection - email
Edith Nourse Rodgers/Bedford VA - invite - email - personalized
dates offered 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th

Congratulations on the Edith Nourse invite! 😀

I got a rejection email earlier today from them, same as others have posted - individual email noting the 178 applications (I checked the directory, last year they got 144). I actually have my other interviews and some traveling between sites scheduled on those days, so I guess I can also look at this as "things have a way of working themselves out." 😛

I have not heard anything either. I applied to the adult psychology track.
I applied to neuro. Someone in my cohort just got rejected for the adult psychology, so I'm guessing that is hopefully good news for you at least 🙂 Not sure if anyone has heard anything from the neuro side.

Has anyone heard from the University of Illinois at Chicago CC yet? I thought I had heard that they sent out invites a week ago, but I looked back through the threads and couldn't find that post again.

Feeling pretty nervous. I only have 3 interviews, have 13 rejections, and still waiting to hear from 5 (2 of which are probable rejections:

Anyone hear from:
North Texas VA (Dallas) med psych track
UMass/Worcester hospital (out of state)
James Lovell VA (North Chicago)

Just FYI, last year WVU Morgantown's TD called applicants to invite them for interviews. I don't remember the exact dates but it was on the later side because I was driving to an interview when I got the call. But I assume they don't interview too many people because they have two slots and only one or two applicants per interview day. - Okay, just checked my calendar and that was on the 14th.

I am still waiting to hear from Loma Linda VA also :/

Yes, I have heard nothing from Loma Linda

I would write the TD ASAP, especially if you do not hear from them by this afternoon. They seemed to have sent out their invites, and their first round of interviews start this Tuesday.

Congrats on the invite! I still have heard nothing from Jesse Brown... which track did you apply to?

I am way way out of state and got a call from Umass yesterday.

Has anyone not heard from Riverbend or did anyone received a rejection? I just looked on the APPIC directory and the 14th was the last date to notify applicants about an interview or rejection.

Not sure if I should email them or wait it out until tomorrow or Monday? Thoughts?

I'm right there with you! Waiting and assuming I am rejected as well. I just don't understand why they would wait this long when they have "known" who they are interviewing early on, not the nicest thing lol. Good luck !

I received a personalized [Dear My Name] email invitation from them on 12/12.

Does the person on the forum who seems to have an inside connection at Miami Children's know if they're planning on getting anthing out before the weekend? Their notification date on APPIC is 12/19 but it would sure be nice to hear earlier.

Well, I am certainly hopeful! :xf: :scared:
I send lot's of positive vibes that you get a phone call as well. Let's hope we both get good news today!

Thank you so much for the information! You all are so amazing on this forum. Thanks for the support and information to everyone on here. Group hug!!!!

Non-personalized e-mail rejection to Aurora

I got that same email...at the exact minute that I got a rejection from Southlake/Regional Mental Health. Not a good morning for me. Waiting on one more site, but I'm not too hopeful about it.

However, I did hear from these in the past week:
12/9 Southern Arizona Psychology Internship Center - Interview
12/13 AspenPointe - Interview
12/14 Wasatch Mental Health - Interview
12/14 UCLA-CAPS - Rejection
12/14 Citrus Health Network - Interview
12/14 UMDNJ-Newark - Rejection.

Well I applied to both, but they didn't let me know which one I'd be interviewing for. My bet is on the general track since I would probably fit better there anyway!

Last year I only applied to NP tracks. When I went there for interview, I realized I was the only one there interviewing for the NP track. I don't even think my interviewers knew what track I had applied for. It wasn't until after the ranking deadline that I had the thought that maybe I should have ranked both tracks cuz my interview was the same as all the general people that I interviewed with. I will never know if I would have matched if I had ranked the general track as well... I was hoping to get another chance there this year but they haven't contacted me so I've assumed it to be a rejection. Good luck to all who did get interviews there, I really enjoyed my interview there last year.

Hi all,

Congratulations to everyone for hanging in there throughout this process!

I wanted to ask whether anyone who has tried to schedule a VA Palo Alto interview for January has received any confirmation on dates. I am hoping to finalize travel plans, but don't want to jump the gun if no one else has heard yet, either.

Thanks!

Valley Mental Health - Interview - personalized email
dates offered 11th and 13th

I haven't heard from Riverbend either. The APPIC website says the 14th but if you go to their site it says they will notify by the 16th so I would wait to email the TD.

I received a confirmation two days after I requested dates, which I did pretty much immediately after they sent out the e-mail.

By the way, has anyone heard anything from the Honolulu VA?

They don't have a clinical-developmental program, only a clinical psychology program that has been accredited since 2003. I found them on the list of accredited programs on that website, so I'm not sure where you saw that they were unaccredited?...Although the site still lists it as a "clinical-developmental" program for unknown reasons.

Personally, I think the field could use some streamlining of credentials, so I wouldn't mind the schools offering alternative degrees being asked to meet APA training standards. Otherwise, it's going to get increasingly difficult to draw the line between solid training and specialties designed solely as marketing ploys. It's easy to see examples of the latter in other fields.
So these are all designated programs in psychology listed in the ASPPB/NR registry of programs meeting criteria. All must adhere to APA accreditation standards in terms of coursework, practica, internship, etc.

Has anyone had rejections from Citrus Health, Wasatch Mental Health, or Riverbend? I haven't heard from any of these site, but I see that others are starting to get interviews. I am kind of assuming that I should expect rejections.

Just received non-personalized interview invite via email from UC Santz Cruz CC.

Hi -- Thanks for the reply! I also wrote back about 15 minutes after their sent out their original message. Was your preferred date in January?

Update for me: Interview at Wright State University; Rejections from Purdue and Grand Valley State. Still waiting for Riverbend. Is it too early to e-mail TDs at Cornerstone or Woodhull? Has anybody heard from these?

Has anyone received an invite for Denver Health - Health Psychology/Outpatient track? Or anything from that matter? I saw a few rejections for other tracks but just wanted to check in.

Southeast Human Services - invite - personalized email
dates offered 18th and 19th

I received a by phone interview offer from cornerstone on Tuesday. Good luck and congrats on your interviews!

General email interview invites to:

Kansas State Univ. CC
Grand Valley State Univ. CC

Both phone with optional open house/campus visit.

Feels pretty darn good after a string of rejections! Best of luck to everyone the rest of the day! 👍:luck:

For all those waiting on Riverbend, I did receive an email invite there a couple of days ago. It was personalized and when I called to schedule it sounded like more interviews than just mine had gone out. That doesn't mean all interviews went out, though! 🙂

Rejection email earlier today. Has anyone received a rejection from primary childrens in UT?

I spoke too soon. Just got an invite! Open house date is January 23rd.
