This is likely the case. This whole process can bring out the paranoia in everyone! As far as being useful information for them in evaluating you, it may give them a sense of your interest in their population or the type of work they do (e.g. if they are a geriatric track, and all your other sites are peds, that might bring up some questions).

So in the spirit of paranoia, I got worried when you said if this is asked and I mentioned different places that is not similar to their rotation it might count against me. So I have interview in different fields: community mental health both children and adults, hospital (Kaiser/Sharp), one university counseling center and one VA. Would that look bad for the interviewer?

Well, this is obviously just anecdotal but I had a pretty terrible experience on an interview last year that made it clear that I wasn't high on their list. Two of the people I was supposed to interview with did not show up, and the one person I met with was 15 minutes late. Also, the person I met with was clearly unprepared for the interview. Thankfully, I had another interview in the same city so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.

On the flip side, I know a woman who was told point blank by a site that they were going to rank her #1 and, well... they didn't. And she didn't rank anyone else so she was pretty screwed in the end. I know there are rules against that happening, but it doesn't necessarily mean those things don't happen.

Anyway, I think those are pretty extreme examples and hopefully won't happen to anyone. I don't know that it's worth putting too much energy into trying to decode what certain behaviors or things said might mean about where you fall in their ranking, though I definitely understand the temptation to do so. I worked in college athletics in undergrad and the interview process reminded me some of the recruitment trips we'd have athletes come on. I think it's worth remembering that both sites and applicants are trying to sell themselves.

I'd definitely caution anyone against trying to read too much into interview day "antics," even in your example. It's possible that the faculty scheduled to interview you may not be in your area of interest, may have been assigned last-minute because your original interviewer had something come up, etc., none of which might actually reflect on the site's interest in you.

You also raise a good point that regardless of what a site tells you, it's NOT BINDING. Thus, they could tell all of their applicants, "you're a very solid applicant and are being strongly considered," and while they may not be lying, they may still not rank you as highly as you'd take that statement to mean. Thus, rank based on your own preferences and happiness with the site rather than attempting to discern what they think of you.

This is an interesting question that I had not thought of. How do you go about answering this- what are the implications? Are they likely to think less of you if you don't have many other interviews?

Building upon Tutu's question, I am wondering what sites may think if you only have one interview. I am only waiting to hear back from two placements, but I'm going to assume that I will end up with one interview after this entire process. How should I approach such a question in that instance? I obviously don't want to lie, but I also hope I don't give off an impression that I am a poor candidate and that no one else wanted me. I don't believe I am a poor candidate - I actually have been able to hold on to some of my confidence in my skills and performance clinically throughout this process - I firmly believe that the probationary status of my school detrimentally affected my chances of matching in the APPIC process. But I also don't want to place blame either...

Any suggestions?

Hi All,

I was hoping I could get some help from a fellow SDNer who is also interviewing at Southern Arizona Psychology Internship Center on January 12.

I'm not arriving into TUC until midnight on the 12th and am finding it incredibly difficult to rent a car around that time (unless anyone knows if it's better to call a car rental place than try to reserve online when it comes to late flights/car rentals?). I was wondering if there is any one else that is interviewing that day that wouldn't mind letting me hitch a ride with them in the morning to La Frontera and then drop me off at my car rental place after (I'm staying in AZ for a while). I would stay at the same hotel to make it easy.

Of course, there is always the ability to take a taxi, but thought I would throw it out there and see if I got any bites. PM me if you willing and able!

I would go, personally. I've run this scenario past my professors and overall, have been told that any chance you get to show interest in the site, meet the staff, and let them meet you, personally, is going to increase your chances. I think unconsciously it would be hard not to favor someone you had the opportunity to sit with and experience in person. Since that's so important in our profession, I think it helps.

But, of course, these are trained professionals who can sense people without being in the room with them, and it would be discriminatory to rank only individuals who had the financial means to visit the site. I think it's nice that so many UCC's are phone-only because it levels the playing field regarding financial privledge (but I'm a sucker for in-person interviews because I think I do better! 🙂 )

While I assume I am being rejected from Sharp, I haven't received their rejection email yet and their due date they announced on APPIC was 12/16. Hmm, anybody hear anything from them?

I have not heard from them yet. I too have been assuming I am being rejected, but somehow have a small tiny (and probably foolish) glimmer of hope that maybe they are waiting to see how many interview invitations were accepted before emailing rejections. The alternative is depressing.

Has anyone, besides the one post, heard about people getting interviews or rejections from SHARP HEALTHCARE in San Diego???????

I would go, personally. Email invite yesterday. I'm still waiting on Temple, then I'll know all my sites.

I had my Boston Consortium interview yesterday, and for those who have interviews there coming up, I think you'll be pleased. They have the interview day down to a science. Everything was very organized and the faculty were very enthusiastic. The interns also seemed happy. Dr. Lancey is incredibly nice and I can't think of a better word to describe him than "jolly"! Dr. Shaw was also very nice and down-to-earth. Nobody asked "tricky" questions or tried to really stump me. They provided bagels/coffee for breakfast and a variety of sandwiches for lunch (including veggie sandwiches). There was water/soda available all day.

The only downside to this interview was that I got stuck in the elevator very first thing! The policeman at the hospital eventually let me out, and I was early enough that I was still early for the interview, thank goodness. Dr. Lancey joked that that's part of the stress-testing, but it was in fun.

CC are unique in this, in talking to my supervisors at a CC they recommend that I go to any open house I can in order to help with my rankings and understanding of sites. However, some sites will not do their open house till after interviews are done - and submit their rank order list before the open house to not be influenced. So I say go, more for yourself than the site. You want to see where you will be working for one year. However, some sites say you can visit are your own time - I am not doing this because a)I dont have the time/money b) many of these sites have pictures/tour on line. If you are going to schedule a visit I would do it after your interview.

I'm interviewing at a rural VA and am trying to avoid the expense of renting a car (especially 'cause of the available public transportation and everything is close together) and hotel late check-out fees. The interview is all day and I planned on jumping on a bus to head back to the airport when it's done, but I'm wondering what to do with my carry-on.

I think it is fine taking your luggage. Most sites know that you probably don't reside in the area and that you're traveling. They are also probably used to people, especially in areas with public transportation, bringing luggage - granted, I'd caution saying this because it probably wouldn't be appropriate to have several bags, but I think a carry on and computer bag are acceptable. I know a few peers did that last year and you just put them in a corner for the day.

Last year some of the interviewees at my externship placement brought their carry-on luggage with them and were able to leave it in a office. I think that it's typical and should not be too much of an issue but I would ask before heading to the interview. Otherwise, some hotels will allow you to leave your luggage behind their frontdesk after you have checked out.

I think you just convinced me I'll contact them and gauge their level of interest. I'll definitely try to schedule a visit for the ones who would meet with me and give me a tour. It's gonna hurt my wallet not to mention time/stress, but since everyone else's doing it (for none CC sites), I guess I can't complain. So thank you for your feedback and good luck to you too!

I received the invitation 2 weeks ago and was told interviews for my track would take place on 1/13. btw question for second timers: did anyone re apply to sites where they interviewed last year (with more hours and obviously better materials), only to get straight rejected this time? that happened to 2 of my sites and im starting to wonder if i did really bad on my interviews...although one place i reapplied to where i interviewed gave me an interview again.

Niknok- I said "it might bring up some questions", not "it might count against you!" (there's some paranoia guided re-stating for you!) Remember- you are at the interview because they WANT YOU for their position. They are not doing you a favor. If there were insurmountable gaps between your training and their needs, you probably wouldn't have been invited to interview. My best advice is to focus on the similarities and how they make you a good fit.
If you've done community psych with adults and children, highlight your experience with the community psychology, and how your experiences with both children and adults has strengthened your appreciation for the general applicability of this approach. If asked directly about the different types programs you are interviewing at (which I'm almost certain you won't be!), you could talk about how your strong generalist training has prepared you well to be a successful professional psychologist in a variety of settings. You could also focus on how your commitment to and strengths with a particular clinical approach or framework (i.e. CBT) guides your case conceptualization in wide variety of clinical settings with many different client types and presenting clinical issues.

Seriously though- try not to be paranoid about this issue. They WANT YOU to be their intern and they have determined that your background and training are appropriate for their site.

Just wanted to see if anyone has....I will probably end up emailing the training director just to be safe since a friend of mine had not heard from a site and she ended up getting an interview (w/the email lost in cyber space).

I heard back right away. That said, I requested a phone interview because I heard from 4 past interns and 1 faculty member that its an awful site. Apparently, last year, every intern had negative things to say about every rotation! (working 70+ hour weeks, no respect, etc) So, maybe i heard back because I had a special request? Just couldnt justify a flight and hotel for that site ....
