2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What makes this worse for me is that someone (many people?), somewhere in a cube at APPIC HQ knows whether I matched and if so, where. It's out there, I just can't get to it. That makes me CRAZY! :scared:

That makes me CRAZY too!! If they get to know, why can't I? I mean... I understand it rationally (and I am thankful that they are so thorough), but my emotion mind is taking over! I think the other thing that is killing me is that I know a couple people who have been told they were being ranked by sites (not ones I applied to). Even though all my sites indicated they don't notify people if they are being ranked or not, it's still causing me a lot of self-doubt.

I only had one site make the effort to let me know that they were ranking me, but I thought it was a little odd, actually. I would hope that they all rank me somewhere on their lists, as there would have been no red flags or misbehavior during the interview that I think should cause me to be completely out of the running. But just knowing a site plans to rank you tells you nothing about where you'll be ranked, so I guess I don't see it as any great information to have. Knowing they were NOT going to rank me would be informative, but not necessarily pleasant news. There are many aspects of this process that are frustrating, but I would think many of us are in the same boat as far as not being informed specifically if we were being ranked for all our sites. I would try not to allow this fact to be a source of self-doubt, especially as you know your sites weren't going to notify you anyway. I know it's hard, but hang in there! 🙂

Actually I wish I heard from the sites that they will be ranking me too. That might have eased my anxiety. A friend of mine heard from two of her sites (both CC) that she is still very much under consideration or that she would be ranked. Since then she has been enjoying herself and not worrying about the match day as much as me. I on the other hand have been going crazy, thinking that I am not gonna match. I am aware that none of my sites are CCs but still I would have appreciated knowing some indication that I was under consideration.

Do hospitals and CMHCs usually act as CCs? I mean do they ever indicate that they are ranking the applicants.

I know I know I should just keep my mind occupied until Friday morning, but I can't help myself!

Aww man, I hadn't spent too much time thinking about this aspect but now I can't stop. It's crazy-making to know that my path is already set and someone sitting in front of a computer already knows it and I don't. Aaaaaaahh.

I am going to try and get through these next 4 days by staying busy. I am setting a goal of having a minimum of 6 hours a day of dissertation work and finishing up my last IRB protocol for submission. Need to funnel this ball of nerves into a productive direction before I become catatonic under the weight of anxiety, lol.

Normally, I would love a 3-day weekend.. but it seems to make things go by slower!

A couple of questions:

1) Is it everyone's understanding the e-mail will become BEFORE 10 am? I know in past years it was supposed to come between 7 and 10 am EST. The NMS website says the e-mail will come before 10 am, but Greg's e-mail from a couple weeks ago says AT 10 am.

2) I know it does not make much of a difference now, so I guess I am just asking our of curiosity, peace of mind, filling up time, whatever you want to call it. Did you e-mail a "thank you" to your sites? I did to some of my sites, but only got a response from 1 or 2. My guess is they get a lot of emails or maybe they just want to make sure they are playing it safe when it comes to the rules? Just some thoughts...

Not long now... 🙂

Not sure about your first question but in regards to your second question, I sent thank you emails to my sites as a courtesy. I received responses from a few but not all the people/sites. I truly wasn't sending them out expecting a response. I know I get thank you emails from applicants applying to my doctoral program (I help out with admissions) and I typically do not respond to them. I gets awkward thanking someone for thanking you 🙂. Plus, we can't really give them any information, just as our sites cannot, so there isn't really too much to say. Hope that calms you down a bit...

Very helpful! Thank you! 👍😀

Only 4 days now! In 4 more days, there is a very good chance I'll know if and where my family and I will be moving in a few short months! I just can't wait for the uncertainty to end. Fingers crossed for everyone that you get a good place for you!

4... long... agonizing... painful days and 4 more sleepless nights. I don't know if I can take it. My anxiety is through the roof. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack. And y'all, I'm not really an anxious person. In general, I'm very laid back and easy-going. UGH!

To cope, yours truly is going to eat pizza and drink beer and listen to techno, everybody, all while ordering a new hard drive and some heels online. I hope I don't get too much grease on the keyboard. Let's all try to enjoy some irresponsibility this week, since we have a valid excuse.

👍 Love it.

I should be working on the intro to my dissertation today, but my scrapbooking materials are sprawled out all over my living room floor and they are so much more inviting....

My current version of irresponsibility is sitting on the couch, drinking way too much chai latte, and watching "Kitchen Nightmares" with Chef Ramsay instead of doing the work I need to be doing. :-/ Oh sweet negligence, how I love thee so.

Sorry to have been the one who put that thought in your head! 🙄

Emails come before 10. What happens AT 10AM is that our status is posted on the NMS (or is it APPIC? I forget...) website. We can click a link to read it, but it says exactly what our email says.

I emailed all of my sites to say thank you and often asked follow-up questions that popped up after reviewing notes and scoring the site. I got responses from about half or so of those I sent. Most were just answering my question(s), some were just saying "glad you liked it, good luck."

I am trying to be productive this week and just met with a colleague to discuss strategies for EPPP prep. Will I actually do any of it this week? The jury is out at ths point. Right now, clearly, I am slacking!

How much sleep will you get Thursday night? It might be an all nighter for me.

Just reflecting on this thread and my posts... A few months ago, I was told I was being too negative for saying the system is really flawed, misses great people, and does not represent the "just world" that many would like it to. Recently, I think I've been told that I'm being unrealistically positive for saying that a year in your life, regardless of circumstances, is what you make of it. (Still not saying it's a just world and people get what they deserve, just that people can choose to make lemonade with lemons or at least pretend it's lemonade ) Just thought this was a funny turn of events. 😛

Good luck everyone! Most people will know in 4 days. :luck:

I love Kitchen Nightmares! I've been working my way through all of them on Netflix...almost done!

LOVE THIS! I keep reminding myself that it is kind of okay that I have been a waste of life for the past two weeks. I have gotten what I need to done, but have not done much extra work. My way of coping is putting on my favorite TV show and having a nice glass of cold white wine and allowing myself to just not think for that period of time. I also will put on my song for the day (it's been Gotye's Somebody that I used to Know for the last couple of days) and dancing around my apartment!

4 more days, I cannot believe we are finally in the home stretch. :highfive:

Somewhere in cyberspace Our matches are lingering- or the information of a lack thereof.

Slightly odd, but at the same soothing. All we can do is keep busy and hope for the best.

Four days has NEVER seemed so damn far away!!!

OMG Psyunknown...that is the same song I have been dancing around my apartment to. Lol. Happy dancing!!

I stole the dancing around the house plan to pass some time... danced to tUne yArDs- "Powa" though... which is my favorite right now.

Out of curiosity, do other people have predictions or strong inclinations about where they think they might match? I do, and I don't really know why. I am almost certainly setting myself up for a weird sense of loss if/when I don't match there. It's not even my favorite place really, just have a strong feeling it's where I'll end up.

I totally have the same, likely irrational, feeling that I know where I will match (if I match). Honestly just hoping for a match, but if I match at this place, I anticipate it will feel a bit anticlimactic. Let's do this thing already, NMS, just over 3 days left!! :xf:

I've swung completely the other way, I'm actually expecting NOT to match. It's not a great feeling either. But the statistics are heavily weighted against me and I just have this ominous feeling. I hope it will turn out better than I am expecting, but unfortunately I am very prepared to be scouring for another internship opportunity soon, and ultimately to not match anywhere.

🙁 Poo.

Anyone know if there is a way to view sites from previous years that were posted in clearinghouse/phase II?

ClinApp, good to know I'm not the only irrational one. 😛 You're probably right that matching at the 'sure' place will feel a bit anticlimactic,,, but I'll take it. Lol. Like you, I just really want A match, any match really. :-/

eudaimonPsyD, I think your sentiment of "Poo" is exactly right. Couldn't have said it better myself. Three more days until we're all put out of this misery that is Phase I.

APPIC does not save this data. However if you look in older post in this thread someone posted the Phase II sites from last year. There is always a handful of really good sites available.

I think it might've been the same day as the match, which last year was 2/25. And yep, I do remember there being a decent number of great programs available.

I don't think the list was posted on this forum last year, though I could be wrong. It was posted in this thread. I don't know when but you can use the SDN search function. The list was spread over quite a few posts.

Ah, well then, I stand corrected. Hopefully it'll be easy enough to find in here.

Wow, hard to imagine that a year has passed since that whole process. Again, best of luck to everyone this go 'round.

Do you think the majority of sites will conduct face to face interviews for phase II, or are they more likely to do phone interviews due to the short time frame?

Given the compressed timeline, I dont think anyone is gonna mandate that you come for an in person interview in order to be considered. In fact, i doubt many places will offer an in-person. I think APPIC has been pretty clear about that.

I believe the guidelines say that sites have been advised to conduct phone/skype interviews unless the applicant is local.

Like others said, sites do not generally do in person interviews during Phase II. Last year, I interviewed at 2 sites in Phase II in person because they were "local" (<2 hours from me) and offered them. However, the vast majority of interviews were conducted over the phone, based on what those sites told me about their procedures.

I'm wondering if as many sites will be in Phase II this year (and in the future) as there were last year. Phase II is a huge improvement over the Clearinghouse frenzy but it's still a pain in the butt for applicants and sites alike. Since this is the second year of Phase II rather than Clearinghouse after Phase I, I think sites may have "learned their lesson" about ranking too few interviewees/applicants to fill all their spots through Phase I last year...

Or maybe it could go the other way and far more sites will end up in Phase II because they don't fear having to go immediately into the Clearinghouse, so in Phase I they only rank applicants that they REALLLLLLY like and figure they'll get another chance in Phase II if they don't match.

Phase II is a real game changer, I just don't know what direction it'll go. 😛 What do people think?

3.5 more days... The most anxiolytic part of this for me is the thought of having to ask my husband to quit his job, and move my family (my husband and two year old son) to a distant city for one year for est 20k. Are there other parents out there? How will /did you make it work?

I'm not a parent but one of my friend's parents did a half-time two year internship to work through it (she had 5 kids, including 1 8 and 1 3). She rented an apartment near her internship (took about half her stipend) and stayed there 2-3 nights/week, did her internship 2.5 days/week (or 2 very long days depending on the week) and stayed at the family home the remainder of the time. The internship was about a 3 hour drive from her house so this was pretty doable. Still, friends/neighbors, her husband, and grown children (2 in 20s, 1 late teens) wound up doing the "mommy" stuff for those few hours a night that the young kids were home after school and day care on those few days that she was gone. I'd really like to hear more about how other people manage it.

Good luck! :luck:

I'm a parent (two young children - one is in school). I applied to sites that were close to family or close to where we live now in order to minimize concerns about moving. I am really really hoping for my top choice, where we will have a lot of family support, so moving halfway across the country wouldn't be so much of an issue. I only ranked 2 sites, and my second choice wouldn't require a far move. We already moved once for graduate school, so I am confident we can do it again. My biggest fear is not matching and facing geographic reality of the Phase 2 sites. I looked at last years openings, and very few are in areas that I would want to move my family to-especially for only one year! My top choice had tons of post-doc opportunities, so the ideal situation for us is only to move one time and try to stay on for a 2 year post-doc.

When we moved for grad school, my partner had a really difficult time finding work. Then we had another baby, so we decided it made more sense for him to stay home with the kids. We've been able to make it work, though I do have loans as a result. I fully intend on applying for loan repayment programs, as I also expect to take out loans during the internship year. If we are able to move closer to home, then he will go back to work. If not, he'll stay home for another year. Either way, I'm confident that it will work out-it always seems to!

Good luck to everyone during these final days! not sure yet how I'll make it through the next two, but I am SO glad that Friday is getting closer!

Seriously.
Every hour feels like a day... every minute feels like an hour... Holy smokes, it's like waiting for the gallows.

:scared:

Hey everyone,

Quick question: I applied to a site that was brand new this year and I just noticed on their website it stated that they will conduct phone interviews and then the Training Director would do second phone interviews with applicants still under consideration. Now, I never got that second call, but I thought my interview went fairly well...What are the chances they actually did not follow through with their plans of doing the second interviews? I was thinking perhaps they did not do it since there weren't too many applicants in the first place...I really hope I am right because they were my first choice too 🙁
Honest opinions, what do you all think my chances are? And, have you heard of any sites claiming to do second interviews but then not following through?

Thanks and good luck to everyone 🙂

Honestly? I think you like torturing yourself.

You will find out in 3 and half days.

With Friday morning match results, we only have 2.5 days left of this awful waiting!

I did not apply to APPIC but am going through CAPIC. Yesterday was the deadline for sites to tell us they weren't ranking us and since it was a holiday, some sites were not in the office. I just got an email from my top site stating they would not be ranking me. I'm crushed. I will admit the site was not a 100% best fit but the staff and the location (city)were great. I have not heard from my second choice which is great (no news is good news right now) but I really thought I had a good shot at my top spot. They were way more competitive than I thought (74 applicants for 1 spot) but I still thought I had a shot.

Thanks for listening to me cry but I figured if anyone would understand, its this group. Good luck to you all on Friday. We rank on Monday and find out on the 5th.

I think I wish it was Saturday Morning.

Who knows. Is there really any logic to this madness?

You got that right, we understand! Bummer about your top pick, but we'll keep our fingers crossed for good news for you on March 5th. Thanks for the good wishes, I'll take all I can get, I'm greedy that way!

Speaking of greedy . . . discovered delicious new cupcake store near me, not such a great find the week of match results. Yummy way to cope, though! 2 days and a potentially sleepless night left, folks! :hello:
