2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been doing that to the Living Social deals!

Are they really going to make us wait until 10???

I got the email that I didn't match at 8:36 last year. Most of my classmates' came in at around the same time.

Good luck everyone! Sending good vibes your way. 🙂

8:36am - Which time zone??!?

And also, good luck everyone!! I haven't slept well all week so I kind of slept last night out of pure exhaustion but I'm terrified.

I matched! Hennepin County Medical Center - Child track. YAY! 😀
If anyone else goes there - please PM me!

Well folks... I matched to my 1st choice.
HOLY SMOKES I DID IT!
Here's hoping everyone has good news to report.

Matched to my top choice!! Good luck everybody!!

And truly taking the time to think today about those of us who didn't match and looking into what I can do to rectify this situation.

Quynh I am so sorry. 🙁 Such a stupid system. I know how this feels...breathe.

So sorry to those who did not match🙁

I matched but to my last choice, a non-accredited site, Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems. Not excited that I missed out on getting an APA site, but I will take it at this point because I want to move on with my career.

An absolutely stellar applicant in my program didn't match this morning. I mean, this person is amazing. Proof of a f***ed up system.

I didn't match, 2nd year in a row. I'll see what's available in Phase II, talk to the director of my program about my options, and maybe withdraw from school (not going through the internship application process again!).

Quynh, I'm shocked that you didn't match. Good luck with Phase II and beyond.

Congrats to everyone who matched!

To those who did not match, I'm so sorry. I'm a Phase 2 survivor from last year (matched to top choice in Phase 2) - if anyone headed to Phase 2 wants to chat/vent/ask questions/anything, please feel free to PM me! It can still work out really well though I know it's hard to imagine right now.

My post in the Occupy the Imbalance facebook group:

Congratulations to those in the group who matched! To anyone who didn't (which included me, last year), believe me that I know it's hard. The system is damaged, and students will be the victims of that damage until we unite and force the system to change. Even if we match, we're going to continue to advocate for students and work to fix this system.

I matched. Believe me that I'm not going to stop the advocacy. One consequence of oversaturation is that every year the Occupy movement will grow by that many more. 🙂

F***, you guys. I didn't match. Dealing with fallout, but doing OK. Going to work it out with my advisor, who is SHOCKED.

Congrats to everybody who did match!

To those who are in my boat, let's keep our chins up! 🙂

Matched, which is great! Not to my top site, which is something I am still processing. Really, really glad to have matched, though, and be able to move forward, but not looking forward to moving. Congratulations to the rest of you who matched, and sincere sympathy for those receiving less-than-ideal news today.

That's what my dad just said. Sorry that you didn't match. Good luck with Phase II (if you see anything you like) or your other plans for the year.

It seems like there's a lot less disbelief in this thread than in past years. I think maybe (and sadly) we're all starting to understand the screwed up system. 👎

Matched to my top site!

Congratulations to those who matched. Also, to those who did not match, you are in my thoughts... And I hope that this broken system starts to get repaired in a serious manner.

I think my advisor is in worse shock than I am. She knew I was ranked highly by my top choice, and that the only way I wouldn't get it was if everyone else ranked them high too. It's cool, I'm going to figure it out. The crying/shaking phase passed pretty quickly. I think we all know it isn't personal and blah blah blah.

A person from my program who didn't match last year just got her top choice! There is hope!

Whoo HOO! I matched to my first choice. I am in Heaven, as I thought no way will I match in phase I since I am from a professional non APA accredited PsyD program and all of the prior interns at this site were from APA accredited programs. They are APPIC accredited and applying for APA accreditation so this site may be APA accredited before I finish up there. Based on the email it sounds as if there were a record of students who did not match this year. Some sites in Phase II are normally very good sites so hopefully everyone finds a place in phase II.

I think there are many groups at risk for not matching. Those that come from free standing professional schools and those at the very research oriented programs that the average internship site will not accept so they end up only interviewing at the "top" sites (e.g., Brown, Yale, et al. . . ), for started. Then, there are of course, there are those with geographical restrictions. I did not match, but got a clearinghouse site that was as good as the programs I interviewed for (very lucky).

I fall into the second category, with the additional hurdle of geographical restriction. But you know, it's not the end of the world. It isn't often that you have the opportunity to face a worst case scenario. Good to hear that your clearinghouse situation worked out. Perhaps it will for me as well!

👍👍👍 As frustrating as it is, Phase 2 does (and clearinghouse did) work out very well for some! I matched in Phase 2 last year and could not be happier with the site I am at now - great fit, APA accred, and just generally awesome 🙂 Recently accepted a postdoc offer at my top choice. Somehow, it all just works out eventually.

Dunno if this is helpful to anyone, but I had a really rough time last year focusing on Phase 2 and not dwelling on the results of Phase 1 - eventually I just kept telling myself over and over that I will get an internship, I'll just find out on a different day and that's all. It's not a black mark that follows you forever, you just have a different match day. It sounds corny, but it really was helpful for me to think about it that way.

Matched and secured an APA accredited spot in the type of setting I want, so I'm happy. My site will require a pretty big move, though, and my husband can't move with me, so I'm still processing all of that.

Matched at my #1.

Thinking a lot about those who didnt match (yet).

I matched! It was to my 5th ranked site, but who cares its an APA, counseling center, which is what I wanted.

Sorry for everyone who didn't match. This process is awful and def needs to be changed.

First, to all those who did not match, my heart truly and deeply goes out to you. I know you are deserving of great things, and this is beyond terrible. I know nothing I say will help, but I wish you only the very best of outcomes in trying for something in Phase II or in moving to whatever is next for you.

For all of you who did match, Congrats!

I matched as well, but to my number 5. All of my sites were highly competitive hospitals, so I can't complain. Adjusting to the idea of moving somewhere I truly hadn't planned for. But who cares, I'm just thankful that I matched.

I think we should also add that 40 hours week should be enforced. How can we finish our dissertation working like crazy...?
