2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview at UNC School of Medicine , 12/7/13, personalized. I had no idea this was coming - on a Saturday, no less!

Interview dates are January 14, 15, 22, and 23rd. We were asked to rank preferred interview dates at application submission, and the site has promised to attempt to match people to their top or second choice.

+1, for behavioral medicine track. happy saturday y'all!

The fact that this is a built-in graphic is one thing I love about SDN. 😛
I love all the graphics! :wacky: Most sentences I write I look and think, "Hmmm, which one of these best expresses my mood/affect now?" 😎 Seriously, love any excuse to use these! :woot:

All:

Many, many apologies for the lack of updates--pressing deadlines have been, well, pressing. I will update the main list tonight. Again, sorry!

There's no need to apologize. You're the one doing all of us (and next year's applicants) a big favor! Thanks for all of your hard work on this.

Sorry if I am the only one that doesn't know how to do this … could someone please let me in on how to access the "main list" thx everyone … many many thx btw to futureappysy2 for all of your hard work on our behalf!!! may your efforts be doubly blessed when you are faced with this effort in the future - what goes around comes around !!!:claps:

I scanned the list and didn't see this one: Missouri Health Sciences Consortium. I received a phone call on 12/3 for the VA general track. Interviews 1/10, 1/17, & 1/24. I still haven't heard from the adjoined University of Missouri, which I was told makes separate calls.

Also, has anyone heard from the Ann Arbor VA or John Dingle VA?

Anyone hear from DC VA? Invite or rejection? Their notification date was yesterday...

I have not heard either way despite the notification date, but know of people who were notified via phone...

So far I've gotten 6 rejections, and zero invites… but I'm still waiting to hear back from 24 other sites. How do you guys get through this?? Pray for an interview for me! Thankfully, I've only been rejected from 1 of my top 6 sites.

Ann Arbor VA doesn't do interviews. You just sign up to attend the OH if you want to visit in person.

Invite also from Missouri Health Sciences Consortium, phone call on 12/4 for the neuropsychology track. Interviews on Fridays in January: 1/10, 17, 24, 31.

...on Ann Arbor VA, they will not likely notify anyone. They do no offer interviews nor do they offer personalized invites to their open house. They invite all who have applied to attend the open house. Attendance, they report, has no bearing on ranking.

I also have 6 rejections and no interviews so far, you're not alone 🙁

Keeping my fingers crossed for you (and you too, CoralMint!) And wow, 30 sites?

Has anyone heard from Pace University? Their interview dates are Dec. 16 & 17 and January 2 & 3. Considering the first two dates are a week away, it is surprising that I haven't seen anything about them on here.

Yes, I heard from them last week via email.

It was personalized; I received it on Wednesday, but I know of friends who received theirs on Monday, so perhaps they are rolling?

Personalized rejection from illiana Va on 12/6. Semi personalized rejection from central iowa va 12/7 around 7:00. Hoping for good news next week.

My site recommended we apply to 25. I added an extra 5 since I am applying to so many different types of sites (State hospitals, university counseling, outpatient/private practice…). Good luck to everybody! It seems like so many people are hearing good news! I'm hoping for some this next week

I'm also really impressed you applied to thirty sites. That's dedication!!!

Are you me? :ninja:

You sound like me........ :uhno::whoa::hello:

But, I applied at 31 sites..............can anyone top 31? :smack:

I wonder who applied at the least number of sites?

Furtherest away in miles from their home? :woot:

Closest to their home? Anyone live above a site they applied to?

This could be fun :hardy: like school reunions....:soexcited:

I really don't mean this as any disrespect to anyone, but I think that APPIC should put a hard cap to the number of sites that students can apply for. I'm not sure what that cap should be, but probably no more than 20 in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I completely understand why people apply to so many sites given the internship imbalance, but I think it would be better for everyone if there was a cap. There would be less competition per site and it would ease the burden on training facilities. It also would be more fair to students who cannot afford to apply to and interview with that many sites. This is just getting out of hand. (Full disclosure: I applied to 14.)

I think I agree with the cap idea. It seems like they sort of tried a soft cap with the $ increase. 30 sites would cost like $1000. Yet of course that discriminates against those who can't afford it. Personally I think the applications should be a lot cheaper, with a hard cap. Perhaps money wins out though. I applied to 15, but only because I was trying to have an amount in the range that statistics have suggested are likely to lead to getting matched. It seems that if one applies to a lot more sites, chances of getting matched go down. Otherwise I suppose I would have done more.

I do not think that there should be a cap. The cost is prohibitive enough but, the cost of not matching this year may mean that I am done. I did not apply to competitive sites and I will sincerely go wherever I end up at as every single site is a long-shot for me. So, under those terms, you would limit my chances?

Does it limit your chances though? Applying to more sites (I can't remember what the number was... more than 18 I think) actually decreases one's chances, *in general.* We can't say for every individual, of course.

Furthest site from my home = 2,700 miles
Closest site to my home = 10 miles
Definitely not least number of sites applied to or most sites applied to (I applied to 19)

Well my furthest site is 2,645 miles away, which would take 38 hours to drive. Luckily I'm flying, even though this will still take 10 hours with two layovers and require me to go through customs. It should be a fun adventure though when I go to interview in January 🙂

Yeah, they've really tried to hammer home the point that it doesn't do you much good to apply to more than 15. And I think the price increase over 15 is a good idea overall. But this warning is often construed in a misleading way: the chances of matching for a given applicant almost certainly go up with each additional site applied for -- as long as the increased burden does not result in compromised applications. The statistic is likely an artifact of students applying to a large number of sites when they are worried about matching (and for some of which, that worry is grounded in a realistic assessment of their competitiveness).

It is more than a thousand dollars. I bought 31 chances out of over 500 sites. I have no way of knowing if someone at those sites might not like the way I look or speak, they may like the candidate with the blue blazer better or the one with the nicer smile. Why on earth should I be limited more than I already am? This is a very high stakes gamble and I am willing give all I must to know that I tried my hardest to finish.

Yeah that makes sense. I suppose if someone can put together 30 high-quality applications, then it wouldn't hurt. I know I struggled to do 15 cover letters that were well-written and tailored to each site. Plus some people tailor their essays as well. That's a TON of work for that many sites.

Wow! I think you might win in that category! :soexcited::highfive:

I understand completely, but it's about money not just trying hard. There's a major social justice issue going on here; am I the only one that cringes at the statement of "buying chances"?

The fact that it is so high stakes is all the more reason for a cap of sites. And it actually might be in your own best interest. There will be less people applying for each of the sites that you apply for. You would have more time to putting in high quality, tailored applications and make progress towards on your dissertation.
