2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have also heard that is is VERY difficult to get a NYC internship if you're not from a NYC program.

Does anyone have a sense of how this might relate to theoretical orientation (i.e., the majority of NYC programs are still psychodynamic, as might be the internships, whereas outside NYC the majority of programs are not psychodynamic)?

Still no word from Saint John's… I am really excited about that site so I hope it's not bad news. Otherwise I got the other 3 I was waiting on today! Congrats to everyone out there and hang in there for those still waiting 🙂
Got a personal email invite from them this afternoon. Super excited! And also so happy that this stressful wait process is over for me… Now on to the real stress!!

My orientation is psychodynamic, and two of the CA programs that I was rejected from were clearly psychodynamic also. That's why I was so disappointed. So I'm not sure how much it is related.

Sorry you didn't get invites to the CA sites. CA is very psychodynamic outside of the VA and Kaiser. Psychodynamic treatment of child trauma is very popular among graduate students in professional programs here, so perhaps the applicant side of the market is just very saturated?

Sorry to hear that, AttachmentGal, and I hope you match somewhere that's a great fit for you!

My question was more motivated by the idea (perhaps mistaken) that NYC is predominantly psychodynamic, and that although CA of course has psychodynamic sites, the orientation is not predominant in all/most of the sites there. I guess I'm wondering if there's less room for applicants with other orientations to match in NYC in particular.

I am doing a lot of phone/skype. About half of my sites don't offer onsite which is helpful. Some did offer onsite which I turned down because they either said it didn't matter or I had a conflict. Hopefully my cheapness doesn't come back to bite me!

"Cheapness is not a sense."

I am in a very similar situation, where most of my sites are phone/skype or I couldn't justify the expense of an in-person because a) it was crazy expensive and b) the site indicated that it didn't matter either way. Here's to cheapiness!

I felt like that with all of my autism sites, most of which I was rejected from. It's really weird and random🙁

Well, eowyne was just saying that CA is very psychodynamic aside from Kaiser and the VA, so maybe the same rules apply.

NYC (and much of the northeast/New England in general) does seem to be hanging on pretty strongly to their psychodynamic roots, yes. I interviewed with a couple places there for postdoc, and felt that my limited experience in the area (even in neuropsych) didn't do me any favors.

It ended up working out well for me personally, as I wouldn't be a great fit for a strongly/moderately-psychodynamic program anyway, but I can see how it'd be particularly frustrating for internship applicants.

As for CA, I really feel that state is its own internship/postdoc/practice ecosystem. There definitely does seem to be a HUGE networking component to placement at all levels, although there are folks from my grad program (which was most definitely not in CA) who placed out there.

+1 for Rutgers UBHC

Anyone heard from:
  • Applewood (OH)...I know calls went out earlier, so I am guessing it's a no go, but any rejections yet?
  • Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake (WI)
  • Youth Opportunity Center (IN)

I'm also waiting on Youth Opportunity Center....good luck!

Mass email rejection from western ny (buffalo) VA (Gero and neuro tracks) received about an hour ago.

I am curious if you could expand on your thoughts re: the VA and Kaiser in CA. Any perspective you might share, I would be interested in learning about.

Has anyone not heard one way or another about Lovell VA? I know invites and rejections were sent out, but alas nothing for me!

Has anyone heard from Clemson UCC yet? I haven't seen anything, but I'm anxiously double checking!

I'm also waiting. Their website says they will notify on the 15th. I take that to mean not any sooner than the 15th.

Is Clemson high on your list?

Received only 1 notification today…

Rejection from Springfield Hospital Center. Received at 12:09 PM.

This process sucks. :smack:

Still waiting on 13. Expecting to hear from 6 tomorrow or Monday.

It's mid-high ish on my list, especially with the location, which is relatively close to Vermont (home) compared to my other sites!

I'm still waiting on New York City Children's Center - Queens Campus (QCPC)...looking less and less likely that I'll get an invite though.

Me too. Sheesh I wish some of these sites would just get to it.
well, its looking like I'm at a 52% likelihood of matching. i have one interview and one site to hear from. i also only had two interviews last year. the 52% last year resulted in no match. heres hoping I'm on the other side of the % this year +pity+

Sigh, me too. I'm with you.

I actually just checked the Montrose VA brochure and they say the deadline for scheduling interview appts is Dec 31. Isn't that really late...?
that's odd- they still have their interview notification date as 12/15/13 on the APPIC webpage. Maybe they mean that they will notify on the 15th but scheduling of interviews may go on through the end of Dec?! Just stabbing in the dark here haha.

I'm going to chime in on the CA topic. I finished my grad program in FL and have been living in CA unable to place on internship in previous years. I had been geographically limited because my husband is active duty military. I picked up a great job as a therapist at the VA in San Diego where I'm involved in addictions research and am supervised my the chief of staff of the VISN 22 VA hospitals (he wrote me a glowing letter of rec this year). I applied to 7, yes 7, VAMC to include the one I'm already working in and didn't get a single interview. I have a competitive CV, research experience, and a passion for working with this population given my personal experience as a wife of a combat vet. So I'm not sure how much of it involves networking and how much involves best "fit". Id like to think I had both qualities and wasn't selected. I also volunteer at another site here in San Diego and wasn't offered an interview either. Not sure how many applicants can say they've put in 20 hrs of free work a week over the past year at a site...but it didn't help. So I think it's speculation to guess that networking with sites here in CA is key. I think it's really just a gamble and the sites are too saturated with applications. I definitely had better luck outside of San Diego this year.

Thanks for the info, do you happen to know when they got the notification?

Actually, sorry to freak you out, but she has NOT heard from them yet. That is the one she is waiting on.

Has anyone heard from Mt Sinai rehab and Kaiser LA? I'm starting to get very frustrated. :rage: My travel plans are in limbo until I hear from these two and I might have to contact a site to switch days 👎. Do you think it would be okay to contact sites early tomorrow? The site I might have to switch is one of my top choices and I want to contact them as soon as possible. These sites should be considerate of how much time we need to plan :uhno:

Good morning everyone! I know it is Sunday, but let's hope for good news anyways since it's the 15th! We are getting closer to the end!
I know I've said it a bunch of times, as have others, but I am so grateful for this website! It is so nice to be a part of such a supportive network. 🙂 Have a good day everyone!

I agree that it is about networking at CA sites. I think the only reason I got an interview at one of my sites is because I worked there previously.

Kaiser LA's notification date isn't until the 20th.

Edit: N/m, I need to work on my reading comprehension skills

mass rejection Mailman Center for Child Development. But at least it was very sweet!

Here we are on Dec. 15th. I'm still waiting on 3 sites that listed today as the deadline for notification...and I've got one more with a Dec 30th deadline. So tired of waiting!

Does anyone know if Kaiser LA and Kaiser Walnut Creek are one and the same?

On another note - best of luck to all given this is what we hope to be a big notification day! To those with large numbers of sites, awaiting a reply - best to you with the responses. It does help when at least you know something!!

I wonder if some of the Dec 15th sites will wait till tomorrow to notify. I’m still waiting on 5, so I feel your pain!

I think it is very possible we might not get notified until tomorrow (hoping it's today though!). But I am guessing if it's tomorrow, the notifications may come earlier in the day, as the sites will want to avoid the barrage of emails they will most certainly get re: "what is the status of my application?!" Just guessing though.

Still waiting on LIJ and St. Luke's. They both say notifications will be sent by the 15th. If I do not hear from them by tomorrow, I am going to email them on Tuesday. Heading out to see Frozen for some self-care.

haha oh man you gave me a bit of a heart attack,:wideyed: but so glad to hear that the person hasn't heard! :xf::happy:

Yeah, that's what I figured too. But then why not just list the 16th as the notification date?!

That's really bad! I'm glad you've at least had better luck elsewhere, and I hope those sites will work for you!

All quiet on the Western front. I still have 3 more sites to hear from that have notification deadlines of today, and another site that is confused and listed something about yesterday and something about tomorrow. IDK. Hope we all get good news soon!

Most of my notifications have come between 12 and 4, so I'm hoping some of my 8 remaining sites will chime in over the next few hours. 2 did not list a notification date (boo!), one is Dec. 20 and one is Jan. 15, but the other 4 have no excuse! 😉
