2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I saw that Mendota Mental Health sent out invites, but I haven't heard from them. And they're not listed under the "rejections" category of the main list… I guess this means I should be expecting a rejection?

Personalized email invite from New York City Children's Center - Queens Campus (I was worried as calls went out yesterday) 🙂

Mass rejection to Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego :sour:

I received an official rejection via attached pdf on Thursday 12/12 (afternoon) from Mendota--the name on email did not match the internship director's name.

Received invites to South Shore and Denver Health today!

But I still have 5 more sites to hear from!! Still waiting on Cambridge Health Alliance, Astor (I saw a different track notified someone kind of late today, but I guess there's still hope), Rogers Center for Research and Training, Superior Court of DC- Child Guidance Center, and The Help Group. Wish this was over by now! If any of these 5 sites still want to interview me, I'm starting to worry that it will conflict with another interview.

Yikes, that's rough. Best of luck! Waiting on 6 over here (1 of which is a likely rejection). I've been trying to check the APPIC directory to see their notification dates but I keep getting a 404 file not found error. Anyone else having this issue?
yes!!!

I want to make a few points that have been addressed on this thread previously, but that it seems some people have not read (understandably, because it is a really long thread!):

First, if you haven't heard from a site yet, and you note that the site has sent out invites DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOU WILL BE REJECTED!! I had this happen to me last week, one of my sites had sent out 3 waves of invites beginning in November, and I had written the site off, only to be offered an invite! The "do not assume" principle applies also to sites that have sent invites AND rejections -- sometimes applicants are placed in a "maybe" pile. Until you hear directly from a site, assume nothing.

Second, if you haven't heard from a site by the notification date stated on the APPIC directory, you should call the site the next day to ask about your application. DON'T ASSUME that no news means a rejection. Sites are required to make reasonable efforts to notify all applicants of their status. Sometimes technical glitches, mistakes, etc., can prevent a notification from coming to your inbox. Don't be afraid to call to check in!

Finally got my Durham rejection. They sent out invites almost a month ago.

I'm still waiting on New York City Children's Center - Queens Campus (QCPC)...looking less and less likely that I'll get an invite though.

just came here to post this as well! such a surprise after 4 weeks 😉

tally is up to 12 interviews, 4 rejections, and waiting on 3. I was hoping to be done hearing back yesterday, but onward we go! I'm guessing people are also starting to make travel arrangements for interviews while we wait for the last few notifications to trickle in. I am thankful to have the opportunities I do thus far, but I had to drink a glass of wine while perusing ticket prices yesterday - yikes 😱

happy weekend, all!

Just got a mass rejection from Temple Univ CC. That one stung. Moving forward though...
Email came through at 10am EST

Does anyone know the date Utah State UCC was supposed to respond by? They have already contacted a group and conducted interviews, but I haven't heard anything back either way. I don't remember what their notification date was.

The 15th. I never heard from them either. My plan is to contact them on Monday or Tuesday. I'm guessing it's a rejection at this point, and I wish they would just send them close to the interview notifications so we're not left hanging.

Yeah I don't think it would be a bad idea to contact them.

Yeah, unless they're planning on sending out more invites, it seems kinda lame to stretch it out like this to the last day.

I am happy with my five interviews, but read a disturbing statistic that the average number of interviews for matched applicants was 9 and the average number of interviews for unmatched applicants was four. This seems odd to me since most people match to one of their top three ranked sites.

I think psychrat raises an interesting issue regarding the relationship between number of interviews and the chance of getting matched. In another post, psychrat posted the APPIC's 2013 match statistics as a source for this statistic.

I can't find that particular statistic on the page. As I have post-interview brain fuzz, could you point me to where it is please?

Like Cara Susanna, I couldn't find that particular statistic among the 2013 statistics. But then I remembered that APPIC has a more detailed breakdown of match statistics from 2011 at http://www.appic.org/Match/MatchStatistics/ApplicantSurvey2011Part2.aspx . Number 13 (reproduced below) seems to be particularly relevant to this discussion. Unfortunately, these data are 3 years out of date, but they do appear to be the most recent available.

13. Number of interview offers received:

1 to 2 interviews Match rate = 52% n = 385
3 to 4 interviews Match rate = 69% n = 516
5 to 6 interviews Match rate = 85% n = 538
7 to 8 interviews Match rate = 92% n = 433
9 to 10 interviews Match rate = 95% n = 355
11 or more interviews Match rate = 99% n = 417

I couldn't find any comparison between the mean number of interviews that people who matched had versus people who did not match. I would predict that the mean number of interviews for people who do not match is lower than 4 since people with 3 to 4 interviews still matched about 70 percent of the time (at least in 2011). Based on the above data, your chances of matching start leveling off after 7 to 8 interviews, but more is definitely better. Anyway, considering that the overall match rate is about 75%, getting 5 interviews or more significantly increases your chances above that base rate. Whether this increases or reduces your anxiety will depend on your situation, but hopefully we all are going through this process with open eyes...

It is under rankings in phase 1. The average number of ranked sites for matched applicants is 8 and for unmatched is 4. I am probably just making myself more anxious by looking at such stats. I am going to focus on doing well on my five interviews instead of ruminating

Ranked sites doesn't mean that they received interviews, though. I think that the 2011 data quoted above is more helpful (and reassuring)!

Just seeking clarification - we can only rank sites that we have interviewed at is that correct?

It's my understanding you could technically rank any site. What's more important is if the site in turn ranks you. I've heard of cases where students don't get interviews but they are told by the site to still rank them. But in general yes you want to rank sites you had interviews at the highest

I was wondering if anyone knows of an airline or website that has flight to hawaii under 800 dollars. I just don't know if I can justify an in person interview for that much. And what's worse is it is only a 50 minute interview and a possible tour. It's really making me think a phone interview is the way to go...

Is this a top site? That is way expensive!

Two things- I thought you could only rank sites in which you have applied and paid for (different from "any site"). It really wouldn't matter if you ranked a bunch of sites that you did not interview with above the ones you did. You would still match to your highest choice that has an open spot for you. Let's say I apply to 20 sites but didn't interview at 10 of them. I can rank those 10 above the ones I did interview with and my chances of matching are the same but I wouldn't likely match until my 11th ranked choice.

$800 for 50 minutes... I think I would stretch that interview out for about 5 days.

well, its looking like I'm at a 52% likelihood of matching. i have one interview and one site to hear from. i also only had two interviews last year. the 52% last year resulted in no match. heres hoping I'm on the other side of the % this year +pity+

My guess is that for sites in Hawaii, phone interviews are the rule, not the exception. Obviously it depends on how many other interviews you have, but paying $800 plus for a flight not including other travel expenses for one 50 minute interview seems like quite a stretch. I've said it before but the fact that people feel pressured to spend that kind of money in this process is completely unfair and a social justice issue. I think all APPIC sites should be required to do phone or skype interviews to prevent people from getting in exactly this kind of situation.

Unless I'm missing something, looks like the total cost for the match process is going to be about $1600. That's better than I thought. Now if I start to bill for my time we are somewhere in the $20,000 range. I'll probably just invoice APA.

Email rejection to Rutgers UBHC in Newark. Still waiting on the Piscataway site +4 others...

+1 for Rutgers UBHC

Anyone heard from:
  • Applewood (OH)...I know calls went out earlier, so I am guessing it's a no go, but any rejections yet?
  • Lincoln Hills/Copper Lake (WI)
  • Youth Opportunity Center (IN)

Have you checked out student universe?
Student Universe is putting me through the ringer right now. I just got invited to South Shore on the 7th (only gave me one date), and I have the open house for Didi Hirsch on the 6th (I'm interviewing in Maine on the 13th so that's the only option) so I'm changing flights around and suddenly a $250 fee appears. It's already exorbitantly expensive to fly into LAX. I'm killing my wallet right now and I hate this.

Generic interview invite at The Help Group! My top choice! 😀 but now, scheduling is going to be an ish. hahaha

Wow, do you have a lot of phone interviews, is that why your costs are so low? The reason I ask is because it seems you have quite a few interviews (congrats btw!) 🙂 I don't know the total cost yet for me, but it's high.

Yeah, that seems low to me too.
