I booked a hotel in Cambridge.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

I interviewed in the area for postdoc last year and stayed in Cambridge as well. It's a fun little area, and finding a decently-priced hotel within walking distance of the hospitals/university wasn't terribly difficult.

Is anyone else on here interviewing at Massachusetts mental health center on January 13?

I interviewed at McLean a few years back, and I stayed at in inexpensive hotel just outside Boston. I must have been nervous about driving in unfamiliar early morning traffic, so I parked at the Alewife station on the red line (cheap!!), took the Red Line to Harvard Sq, and then took the bus to McLean (http://mclean.harvard.edu/about/directions/).

Please bring your warm coat and shoes/boots - you'll be walking from building to building on the McLean campus, and although they're probably good about clearing snow off the sidewalks, interviews always feel better when your feet aren't freezing!

Anyone heard from Gateway Foundation, IL?
Their notification deadline was 12/30. I may have to call them since they didn't respond to my email.

Personalized interview invite to Howard University. It gave me a bit of a heart attack because it started the same way most rejection emails start - thankfully they underlined the sentence about acceptance. Dates are any time in January and we're supposed to call or email to schedule. That's my final site. Heard from all of them! 5 interviews. I'm quite happy.

Scary question - I'm hoping for the best but planning for the worst. I have an interview in California and then I'm flying directly over to Boston for an interview. There's not much time between the two and I'm pretty positive I have the latest possible flight. Let's say worse case scenario the flight is canceled and I can't make my interview - obviously I'd ask for a phone interview, but is there anything else one can do? A girl at my school had the same issue and the site refused to conduct a phone interview with her and she lost her interview opportunity completely due to the weather. Again, planning for the worst - what's some general advice as this whole "snow" thing rears it's ugly head?

I don't think there is anything you can do. It's like when I was fearing that it would rain on my wedding day and ruin my outdoor ceremony. It didn't rain. In fact, the day was perfect. I could have just enjoyed being a bride instead worrying about things out of my control. All this to say do what you can do and if the site won't give you a phone interview you don't want to go there anyway. One thing that could help your anxiety is check the weather a few days before and call the site ahead of time so that they can prepare and you can feel better. Good luck!

So, I'm pretty disappointed about my interview today and I'm looking for honest opinions! Unfortunately, my interview today for my top site was cancelled and changed to a phone interview :-/ I was pretty alarmed that they changed it to two half hour time slots, as opposed to the two one hour in person meetings that were originally scheduled! I also now miss out on the morning overview by the TD and lunch w the interns. Honestly, I'm sure this puts me and the other applicants that would have been there with me today at a disadvantage. Any thoughts or suggestions or words of comfort would be helpful! Thanks y'all!

I don't know how helpful you will find this, but I'll give it a stab! First of all, it seems to me that the vast majority of the day during in person interviews is spent trying to give the applicant a better sense of the program, rather than trying to evaluate the applicant. As I look at the interview schedules I have received a good portion of the day is spent with an introduction, tour, times for questions, and wrap up. What that means from your perspective is that by not getting a chance to do the on site interview you will probably lose some perspective on how much you would like the site (though you say this is your top site, so it sounds like that part might not matter as much to you), but so long as you are still doing phone interviews, you probably won't lose too much advantage in doing phone interviews. Second, I know several people from my program who in the past have matched with places where they did not do in site interviews. Third, I presume that this site is in a location prone to stormy weather, which means probably a number of applicants to that site will be in your shoes (not just the other applicants from today) and they have probably been through this dilemma before and found ways to balance things out for those whose interviews are interrupted by weather.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I heard from them on the 20th. They have different sites (with different people notifying from each) , so I'm not sure of each site's timeline.

Thanks! I applied to 3 of their tracks. Didn't hear from any (even emailed them asking for an update and nothing). I am just going to give up on that site. My schedule is already pretty hectic for January.
Good luck with your interviews! 😉

So I'm feeling pretty discouraged…only 3 interviews out of 10 applications 🙁

I was disappointed with the number of interviews I got last year too, but take heart. I ended up at a VA in the end, and though it wasn't in my ideal location, things are working out just fine. Embrace all of it, learn what you can, keep it in perspective and remember that this is not a reflection on who you are as a person, but you can certainly learn and grow from whatever happens! It might not feel like it will all be ok (it didn't when I was in that position last year) but it will be ok. Try practicing distress tolerance and habituation to worst feared outcomes, and focus on being authentic yet prepared in your 3 interviews!! 😀

I really appreciate your offer, I'm definitely looking for some tips on successfully interviewing. I guess I'm just wondering what questions to expect and prepare for most generally. What are some general tips, things to avoid, how to handle questions we aren't sure about. I'd love to hear from people who have already interviewed or are well past this process. My first interview is Monday and unfortunately it's at one of my top sites.

Also, anyone at a forensic or correctional site, I'd love tips on correction specific questions if possible. Most of my sites are forensic in nature.

Thank you so much for any responses, I really appreciate it!

I would really appreciate this as well

Anyone going to the American Lake VA open house, which ends at 5:30pm on 1/8, to the Portland open house on 1/9? If so, do you mind sharing how you are getting there? Is transportation (shuttle) available from Lakewook, VA to Sea-Tac airport? Thanks!

I am going to both sites. You can catch the Amtrak from Tacoma to Portland at 6:15pm. The train ride is about 3 hours long and the fares are quite reasonable ($26 bucks for general and $40 for business class).

Unfortunately, there isn't any specific train from Lakewood to the airport so your best bet is to hire an independent shuttle (https://www.capair.com/seatac) or to get a cab. There are also bus lines that go the airport that start from Lakewood and Tacoma but you may have to make 1 or 2 transfers. You can look up routes here: http://www.piercetransit.org/pierce-transit-routes/

I grew up in Tacoma and have been very frustrated by the lack of progress the city has made providing airport services but once the LightRail is extended from Seattle to Tacoma, it should get much easier.

Hope that helps!

So I know that several of my interviews will read me a case vignette and have me diagnose and talk about how I would go about treating hypothetical clients. My concern is both remembering the vignette and keeping tack of my thoughts. Would it be odd if I asked if I could jot some notes down as they read me the vignette?

Almost all of my interviews have given me a vignette. For each one, I wrote down notes as they spoke and even asked them to read it again if I thought I missed something. I think that's normal.

Hi All,
Any advice is welcome, I am trying to decided if I should attempt to drive to my interview on Monday in Pittsburg given the snow and freezing temperatures forecasted for tomorrow and Monday. I originally planned to drive to Pittsburg tomorrow (3 hrs usually), stay the night, go to the interview then drive back Monday. I have an interview on Tuesday as well so I need to make it back home Monday evening. I e-mailed the training director explaining my concern and asking to either reschedule, do skype or a telephone interview instead but have not heard back. On top of it all, I have the pretty scary drive from last thursday to my last interview etched in my mind; when I got there the site had closed due to the weather. I chanced driving to the last one but I'm pretty sure that I'm not up for a drive like that again. I have a feeling I won't hear from the TD by my interview time which is 8:30 on Monday. Any thoughts?

Thanks, so you think it is okay to have a pen and pad out during the interview or do I take them out when they say they are going to read me a vignette. These are in-person interviews?

Could you take a Peter Pan bus? That is what I am doing so I do no have to worry about driving.

Hi, Thanks for responding. I'm coming from Ohio, and I'm not familiar with that but I'll check it out as an option.

When flying to interviews, do you find it's easier (and cheaper) to rent a car or pay for taxis to and from the site?

I'm renting cars for my interviews. If you think about the cost of a taxi to take you to your hotel from the airport (if your hotel doesn't have a shuttle), take you to and from your site, and take you back to the airport it may end up costing the same.

If you're concerned about the cost, see if your undergraduate college has any alumni benefits. I looked up mine and they had a 25% discount with budget car rental. (Your undergrad may have some deals with hotels). Also, if you rent a car for a couple of hours it will be a lot cheaper. For one interview I'm renting the car for about 6 hours and it was about $40 less than what the daily rate was.

I'm doing a bit of both depending on where I am and how many days I'm spending there. I prefer to rent a car because it's nice to have the flexibility, but I don't want to drive in snowy places!

Anyone else off to the VA Puget Sound Open House Monday? They mentioned the possibility of limited on-site parking due to construction, although I haven't heard any updates since the email in early December. I am planning on driving as I will have a rental car. What are the plans of others? Do you know of any good parking alternatives in the area?

I don't know if this helps, but that's actually pretty average for that number of applications. Remember, you only need one internship, so just focus on the interviews you have and know that total strangers on the internet are sending you good vibes and hoping you match at your top choice! 🙂

I'm trying to do other forms of public transit (bus, subway) to cut costs when viable and have been reasonably successful thus far. Only planning to rent a car once and that is to actually drive between locations in the northeast. Plane tickets from site to site would have been around $700 and I got a rental car for 2 days for $50 so well worth it! These sites are just a couple hours apart so it actually seems significantly less risky than dealing with airlines. I'm not thrilled about having to drive in between my one back-to-back interview, but just can't justify the expense given I'm already spending a small fortune.

I actually ended up renting cards and driving to almost all of my interviews, but I'm a glutton for punishment in that sense. If it was >7 hours, though, I flew (except in one special circumstance).

Same thing happened to me-- From your description, it was the same site!! Such a bummer-- I had also already flown in, and was five minutes down the street, but they still had me to a phone interview (to be fair, I am guessing; though they never replied to my email offering to meet in person, so I can't be sure). I appreciated the response from PsychApp2. I'm not sure if you've done your phone interview yet or not, but I found the faculty very nice and easy to talk to. I'm not sure I have anything particularly useful to say, but just wanted to empathize with your disappointment!

Generic rejection from U. Hawaii UCC, January 3rd.I'm done now, with 5 invites and 10 rejections. 3 interviews done, two more to go.

What are the case vignettes like? Also, dsm v??

I haven' had one yet, but I think they just read a you a vignette and ask you to diagnose and discuss treatment. I am not sure about the DMS V part.

  • Please help us paint an accurate picture of the 2013-2014 APPIC applicant pool
  • Fellow applicant part of research tem 🙂 Your support and participation are much appreciated!!!
  • Research announcement has IRB approval as well as approval from SDN administrators for posting
You are being invited to voluntarily participate in a research study investigating the qualifications of applicants applying for APPIC or APA accredited internships focused on the provision of services to children and/or adolescents. Students meeting these criteria are eligible to participate.

INSTRUCTIONS BELOW...THANK YOU!!!!!!!

If you agree to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey about the internship programs you already have or are planning to apply for and about your various pre-internship experiences. You will also be asked to upload a pdf copy of your basic APPIC application onto the survey website or by emailing the primary investigator, Emery Mahoney, Ph.D. ([email protected]). Your participation in this research is expected to take 10-15 minutes. You may choose not to answer some or all of the questions. In addition, the AAPI lists identifying information. You may choose to provide a scanned de-identified copy of the basic application which would require you to black out any identifying information, scanning the document and uploading it on the survey site linked below or emailing it to the primary investigator. You may also choose to leave this information in. This information will not be distributed or used in any way except for purposes associated with this research project. Identifying information will not be used in any way for this research. We would like to extract the following information from your application:
· professional certifications, publications, presentations, history of disciplinary action in program, history of legal action, academic program (clinical, counseling, school) and degree type working on (Psy. D./Ph.D./Ed.D), GPA, program accreditation status, training model used (scientist practitioner/scholar practitioner/other), dissertation research type (collecting own data/using established data set), date of completion of coursework, date of completion of comprehensive exam, date of completion of master’s thesis (if applicable), status of dissertation, number of practical hours (including assessment, intervention, supervision and support) and broken down by population, setting, modalities (individual, family therapy etc.) and tests given, anticipated number of hours to be accrued after application submitted and internship start date, previous supervisors’ credentials (allied professional or licensed psychologist), and primary theoretical orientation (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, etc.)

Participants who provide their basic application will also be contacted in March for a follow-up survey about their match results. This follow-up survey is estimated to take approximately 5 minutes. Any questions you have about this research can be answered by contacting Emery Mahoney, Ph.D. ([email protected]); you may withdraw from the study by choosing not to complete the survey while in progress or within 3 weeks of survey completion if identifying information is provided, by contacting Emery Mahoney, Ph.D. While many precautions are taken to protect the privacy of information, those students who upload their application with identifying information on it risk confidentiality being breached and their identifying information and information from their AAPI being revealed. This could impact the ability to gain employment and potential consequences to the individual’s reputation could occur. If such a breach occurs, you will be contacted if contact information is listed.

Those individuals who follow the survey link and either agree or disagree with the terms of the subject disclosure form and provide a name and email address will be entered into a drawing to win one of ten $5 Amazon gift cards. No other direct benefits from your participation are expected. There is no cost to you except for your time. The survey is expected to take 15 minutes or less. Only the principal investigator and co-investigators will have access to the information that you provide.

You can obtain further information from the primary investigator, Emery Mahoney, Ph.D. If you have questions concerning your rights as a research subject, you may call the University of Arizona Human Subjects Protection Program office at 520- 626-6721.

By responding to the survey and uploading your AAPI, you are giving permission for the investigators to use your information for research purposes.

Tomorrow begins a 3 week marathon of 12 interviews with 3 already finished in December. I found it was cheaper to just fly a series of one ways and staying an extra day or two versus flying back and forth from school but this is still turning out to be one of the most expensive ventures of my life..... O_O

I'm doing that this week and next, only with less interviews 🙂

I have my second interview tomorrow at one of my top choice sites and then all of my other ones packed into the next few weeks. Good luck to everyone these next few weeks. :luck:

Yeah, I'm going to be a wreck for the next week and a half (literally an interview EVERY weekday through next Wednesday) but then it will all be over! Hard to believe we're hurtling towards the actual end of this process already!

Good luck, everyone!!
