I'd like to say something regarding this discussion (AKA respectful yet dripping-with-resentment argument) between those who matched in Phase I and those who are involved Phase II. Before I say this, let me say that 2/21 marked the second time that I did not match.
Each of us needs to go through the internship match process. Given this fact, SDN is an amazing resource where we can band together and provide one another with much needed support. However, at some point, we must inevitably split into two groups: those who have been given the ticket to move on to the next phase of their futures, and those who have been given instead a large hurdle in their path and no map around it.
At some point as young clinicians, we learn that we can't just push our patients or tell them what to do; we need to meet them where they are. Those of us in Phase II have to realize that some of the people who matched in Phase I have the best intentions in supporting us, and are genuinely upset for us. However, I think a great deal more understanding is required from Phase I matchers.
To those of you who matched in Phase I, I beg you to ask yourselves why you feel the need to be on this thread when there is no practical reason for you to do so. Then, instead of becoming insulted by Phase II posters' reactions to your advice and encouragement, consider this: if we weren't in a place of anger, sadness, resentment, anxiety, etc. because of the very process in which you were successful, and if this were the general internship forum, your encouragement would be welcomed. Somewhere inside of us, we are happy for you, but given that we are struggling to maintain some ounce of self-esteem, we are simply not ready to have your success in our faces. Please try to meet us where we are.
