I don't think, white poor, black poor, yellow poor or brown poor makes a difference on the hardship! The HARDSHIP makes the hardship, and everyone sees it different. Even siblings can have different views on the hardships growing up.

Wise up people. This thread is so hard to read, with one trying to up the other instead of helping each other. I hope this is not a sample of what the future Harvard doctors will be like!
 
The person you're quoting, while misguided, already apologized for starting this outrageous discussion over a week ago. It's okay to stop resurrecting the derail now.

Edit: Sorry, I think I may have come across more harshly than I intended. I'd just rather not see the one rotten bit of this thread continue to draw attention away from what really matters: Miley Cyrus. Let's all just hug already.

Sorry. I was just catching up with the posts and had to reply to it. You are right... we should not concentrate on the bad tasted posts.

Guys, this is an awesome place. My best friend is up here for our official white coat / oath ceremony tomorrow, and after he met the other people who just happened to walk into the kitchen while we made dinner, he gushed about how they are just SO different from the snobby, pretentious Harvard stereotypes he expected.

I'm so inspired by these first two weeks. It's about to get tougher, but just meeting really amazing future colleagues, interviewing patients, and having really fantastic discussions about ethics, etc., with some great people has been unbelievable.

So I'm five years out of college, and the following prompt applies to me:
If you have already graduated, briefly (4000 characters max) summarize your activities since graduation.

And yet, like everyone, I did a thorough chronology of this in the AMCAS activities section! In other apps, I have tactfully said that I defer to that section of the AMCAS application. Is that wise here? I mean, otherwise it's just going to be redundant...
 
I'm looking over their requirements for applying to the HST pathway--if I literally didn't take any of the classes suggested (calc-based physics, higher level sciences, etc.), but do have a relatively good research background, should I even bother trying to apply HST, or should I just go NP? I guess if I apply for HST it would raise my chances of getting in, but I'm just worried that they might be like, "this girl didn't even take calculus-based physics!" Any suggestions super welcome!

Even if you put it in your AMCAS, you can probably craft a nice narrative, with nuance, in this essay section. Describe exactly how one activity got you to the next, and use some space for describing learning if applicable. Basically, I felt like my AMCAS activities were kind of resume like, so I used this to really tell a story. My two cents.

I am looking for some opinion here. I submitted my primary AMCAS in late July. I did not choose Harvard as one of my schools at the time. However, I am thinking about adding it to my list of medical schools.

I read on this school's website that they need to receive letters of recommendation from all research supervisors. I have been involved in research for 3 years. Currently, I have chosen a science professor who evaluated my thesis project. Unfortunately, my main research supervisor is unable to write me a letter this year.

Do you guys think this will hurt my application in anyway? Overall, my letters include 2 science professors, 1 english professor, 1 letter from my community service supervisor.

I will most likely get a letter from another supervisor from an EC activity.

I think that I should NOT totally take Harvard out because of one letter. What you guys think?

I asked them about this and the response I got was basically along the lines of "It's not a strict requirement but you should do your best to submit the letters we are requesting." I went ahead and submitted my app and I may still try to get a letter in the future. In my case, I had letters from two prior experiences and I had just started my current research experience when I submitted my AMCAS, so I didn't feel that they knew me well enough at that point for it to yield a meaningful letter. It seems like they take it case by case so it never hurts to ask!

Sssss....you know what? I went with my gut and JUST added Harvard!
 
The application says that all applicants who submit by the October 22nd deadline will receive the same opportunity in the review of their applications, right? Does anyone know of any official word if you truly are not at a disadvantage if you apply closer to the deadline vs. as early as possible?

I have a friend who just finished HST. It is an insane program. If you think you can and want to deal with it, then do not let a few classes get in your way! Just know that you will have the best and brightest from all over the world competing for these few spots.

As a side note, if you do apply and get in, I have all of my friend's HST books and notes taking up a huge corner of my apt... so let me know if you can use them in the future 🙂 good luck!

And why would the official Harvard secondary not be good enough?? That's pretty much the best confirmation you can get.

They don't do rolling admissions so you're not at a disadvantage as long as you get everything in before their deadline.

this dudes a beast! I just checked your MDApps. It seems our apps are very similar. My stats are a tad bit lower and we're both URMs. Where from Africa are you btw if you dont mind me asking?

Anyway, I hope my interview list grows to be as big as yours soon!

Thank you for the kind words 🙂 I don't know where in Africa my family is from. My mom's side has always been in America so I can't trace my lineage. My dad is from Jamaica. Best of luck with your interviews!👍
 
II! Very excited about this. Does anyone have the actual stats on # of accepted versus # of matriculated for Harvard?

Received the interview invite last night. I'm super excited and still a little in shock! 3.7/37 non-trad.

Can any current students or former interviewees please suggest things to do during the interview day? I understand it's very unstructured and includes taking taxis to whatever hospital you happen to interview at. I'd like to use the down time as productively as possible to really get an understanding of what Harvard has to offer.
 
I've figured out that since Harvard really has nothing to prove, they can afford to not give a sh** about stats and artifice. I feel that they go for the individuals who they like and want, and that's a really, really cool thing.

Does Harvard update somewhere how many interview invitations have been sent out like some schools do?

Also, since someone said this school doesn't do rolling admissions, how come interviews are already being sent out? Just curious.

No.

How does non-rolling admissions have anything to do with interview invites? They interview as they go, but all decisions go out in March (I think). They claim at if you submit by Oct 22 you receive full consideration, so maybe they don't even make any decisions until after everyone is interviewed.

I had a Saturday interview last year, and those are more structured -- we stayed in one building except when we got a tour, and our interviews were all in that one place. But I urge you to please not take a Saturday interview unless you need to -- for example, I was a teacher and couldn't miss too many days with my students while going on interviews.

As for how to make the most of your interview day? Stay with a student host! Ask them questions! Meet their friends! Ask them questions! Most of us, I think, came here and love it here primarily because we met amazing classmates.

Harvard, within some reasonable range, doesn't seem to give a sh** about stats and artifice. Also, nobody here has told me their MCAT score or GPA or anything like that. However, lots of people have told me life stories or at least really moving stories about things they've done, projects they've worked with, etc. Harvard totally seems to be going for interesting, compassionate people. And brilliant -- like, you should sit in my tutorial -- those folks are smart!

Okay, I thought more about this and what I meant to say actually is that is there a certain number of interview invites that Harvard aims for? Because if that's the case, then isn't it better to send in the application earlier?

I hope I clarified what I meant. Again, I am not too aware of the process for Harvard. Just trying to learn it.

I would say that it definitely won't hurt you to send your application in earlier versus later. There's no telling whether you'd have a higher chance of getting an interview when they have more slots available. Yes, there are a finite number of interview slots (~900-1000 in recent years) but they also most likely review all applicants before filling up all of those slots. Bottom line - get your application in as soon as you feel that it is ready.
