2013-2014 Panic Thread

Just called a school I interviewed at because there was a committee meeting yesterday. They accepted 9 people during the meeting and I wasn't one of them....... Why dont these schools want me???
That hurts. I am sorry to hear that. Did they disclose 9 out of how many people?

Sigh, officially on 2 WL, with no more II coming up. Ughhh was really looking forward to celebrating an acceptance. Oh well..

No they didn't say 9 out of how many. I have heard that this particular school has already accepted ~60 (before the 9) for a class of 100..

I just got accepted to medical school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys have no idea...of the struggle...to get here....

(They left a voicemail telling me to call them back. I didn't even see the phone call because I hide my phone in my desk so I can't stare at it obsessively.)

WE CAN DO IT GUYS!!!!!!!!!!! I AM 100% ROOTING FOR YOU!!!!!!

Niceeee, school and stats to give us hope?

Oh gosh... the people gearing up to prepare their apps for 2014-2015 application cycle are starting to fill the threads... is our time over 🙁

It's not necessary over but if we have to re-apply, we'll need some time to add activities to the application for the next year. Applying late once was enough of a lesson. 🙁

Look guys, we still have 4-6 months left in this cycle. Anywhere we're still in, we still have a chance to get an interview at. I know of VERY few schools that are full or totally winding down their interview seasons. Especially at this time, people start dropping interviews and withdrawing. I'm not saying there are great chances for multiple interviews yet to come, but I hope there might at least be another one in some of our futures. 🙂

My PI (also a pre-med advisor) loves to tell me all of the people she knows who were interviewed and accepted at the very bitter end. It's not over yet.

WL & deferred (seems like a nice way of rejecting me, I think) at the 2 schools I've had interviews so far. One II left for next year...

Based on the numbers i know for one schools, they have accepted 70 people for a class size of 100. Im not sure how many extra they normally accept. I would say most schools have accepted ~60-70% of the people they are going to. Its not over yet for us but the door has started closing...

Congrats man!!! Hopefully you won't be seeing this anytime tonight because you'll be too busy celebrating but congratulations again.

For everyone not yet accepted please keep the faith. Was speaking to a few Rush students the other day and one of them didn't get an II until March. On top of that it's already been a slower cycle with the processing delays. We can do this!

This is giving me the most panic. I don't want to think about having to do this again but I know I'm going to have to. No II so far and only one more day before the Holiday breaks means I'm going to have start preparing for 2014-2015 cycle.

Second rejection from UNC today. Whoo -____- They're handling business before break. Everyone be aware.

Christina: do you want to know what a good roommate i am?

Christina: i am resisting the
urge to call you from my coworkers'
cell phones with different area codes and
accepting you into the medical school of christina
I've been thinking about it since i got in
but i thought that would be mean
so i guess it's not that I'm a good roommate
it's just that I'm resisting the urge to be a mean one

I have never been more neurotic about checking my e-mail then I am today.

I wonder if anybody will really send out II today or if it's going to be a general "still looking, will get back to you after break" type situation for most schools.

I hope its the former! Good luck to you!

I'm leaving the country on the First of January for two weeks, so the fact I won't hear anything until late January if I don't hear today is driving me slightly mad.

II's are over, 2 "continuing evaluations" and haven't heard from the other (over 5 weeks now). Pretty sure I'm not going to get anymore.

Praying for a Christmas miracle here.

Just received the latter from a school today. As long as its not a rejection I'm fine with it.

Now we get to have silence for at least another two weeks.

68.2%. Honestly though it depends on the school. Some schools might have already filled up-NYU I believe is one of them- and others may be barely halfway through the interview season (Rush comes to mind). It's not over yet.

Ugh, I convinced myself that everything would happen this week due to the holiday break, and I haven't heard a peep from a single school for the past two weeks. 🙁

This is something I am trying to tell myself that some schools are not through their interview season yet. I don't like entering the holiday break with 0 II's. I keep telling myself, the silence I'm hearing from schools is still not a no and there is still more to the season.

It is hard to keep the thoughts of a positive outcome for this season.

You have come to the right place to vent my friend. Do you guys remember how many people around you came in as pre-med during freshmen year?? I swear, almost 70-80% people I met were premed! How many of those people are in the position to have applied to medical school?? And speaking to you specifically, having a LizzyM score of 74 is pretty ******* awesome and definitely something to be proud off (I sure as hell dont have that!). We all sacrificed more than the average college student to get to the position of being able to apply to medical school. It's understandable that we would expect some kind of reward for our hard work and sacrifice. I have been fortunate enough to have snagged a few interviews (but no acceptances). A lot of you out there with much more impressive applications than mine haven't been so lucky. You would think that a system such as medical school admissions would have some kind of method behind its madness. The only thing I have learned from going through this process is that it's impossible to estimate how well you are going to do. The best advise I could give to any future applicants is to go into this hellish process as humble as possible and as patient as possible.

I'm going to burst.

Did I mention I am a great f'ing person????? I saved a child from drowning. Giving myself brownie points for that.

I have to agree with all the venting. I am on 2 wait lists, so I shouldn't complain. But even being placed on the wait list can feel pretty bad at times because I feel like its med schools telling you that you are totally "acceptable" but we don't want you because we'd rather have someone else.

I agree too. With 1 waitlist and 9 silences (in short no acceptances), it can surely be heart-breaking often times. But as someone else mentioned, think about all those students who decided to not be pre-med anymore after their first semester of Undergrad. You all are still here! You all have worked hard, and having reached the position of apply to medical schools is a feat in itself. Feel good about your efforts and yourself as a medical school applicant! If you want to become a doctor, you will ultimately become one! Some of us will get at least one acceptance (if not more), while others will unfortunately not get an acceptance to medical school at all for this cycle. And those who are truly dedicated will just think about their ultimate goal and apply again next cycle after addressing and fixing the aspects that resulted in no acceptances last cycle. So guys, chill! We really can't do much now other than wait patiently (or neurotically in my case). Haha  Let the Adcoms take a well-deserved break, so they can come back and give interview invites and acceptances to us awesome panicky people too. Have an amazing break! And I'll keep y'all in my prayers.

I sometimes wish medical schools could do a basic screen for pre-reqs/GPA/MCAT for competency and then be able to look deep into our soul because some of us truly, deeply yearn to become doctors, to attend their particular school, and to earnestly give back to society.

Still heard nothing in the past 2 weeks, absolute silence. Please give me some good news before Christmas!

Same here. Applied to 18 schools. Little on the down side. 6 rejections and silences from rest!

Rejected from ECU several months ago. Rejected from UNC last week. Just rejected from Georgetown. Sitting on 3 decent waitlists, and 1 likely rejection pool. No further interviews in the pipeline.

There are likely several reasons why I'm being rejected, but I want to know exactly why, and the uncertainty is killing me. These rejections likely bode poorly for my waitlists.

Maybe I am misinterpreting you, but I made a thread a few months ago saying that schools should do a basic screen before sending secondaries, and go from there. I wonder how much time I wasted writing secondaries for schools that never gave my application the time of day on their end.

We ask you to do this screen.

We ask you to do this screen.

It's much harder for applicants to screen themselves out than for admissions committees to screen applicants based on their own guidelines. Most schools have relatively vague guidelines for what they are looking for based on MSAR and websites: 3.65 GPA, 33 MCAT, volunteering, passion for service, some exposure to healthcare, research. So many people fit the criteria for so many schools that most solid applicants could easily apply to 20 school thinking they are a good "fit". However it SHOULD be the schools screening out applicants before we give them 100 bucks a piece (plus the 30 from AMCAS just to add a school), particularly if there is a set system in place to reject most applications, and especially because schools are getting so many applications. If I spend 100 dollars and get a rejection a day later without eyes giving my application a fair look, I think that is unfair. Just don't send me a secondary and we can go our separate ways.

ps i know i make some assumptions in this but the main point is that I think school who don't screen just want the money which I don't think is right.

Well I have already secured an acceptance, but just got my fall grades and didn't do so hot. I got a c in one of my classes. Should I be panicking about this? The medical school I was accepted at says they expected continued satisfactory school work.
