2013-2014 SUNY Buffalo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just as some encouragement, I was not interviewed until almost spring, had already received many acceptances (would rather not say the exact number), but in Februaryish my name was pulled, I was interviewed, and accepted next day. I empathize with the frustration waiting, but by the same token random review balances out the fact that some very good students (especially the increasing # of non trad and graduates) will just not be on the same schedule as others. It takes the statistical advantage of submitting early away, which some won't like and some will. I like knowing that my classmates were judged purely on their own merit and not how good their pre-med advisor was. It also gives students who needed a retake late in the season hope, which I think goes hand in hand with holistic review. That said, your frustration is understood But hold tight, your day will come!
Thanks for the encouraging info. It gives hope to many of us who were considering the delay as silent rejection.

Any other MD/PhD applicants in here? I received the "application is complete" email on 10/21 and haven't heard back since. Anyone else in the same boat. It seems with UB this could take a while.

I interviewed on the 20th, and I remember them saying that we will hear back by December 5th, so I think decisions for this interview date will be coming out tomorrow! Wish everyone the best of luck 🙂

Good luck fellow interviewee! Fingers cross that there will be good news today. :xf:

Current med students-- can you please tell me what your typical daily class schedule looks like (class days/times)? The website shows the classes you take for each semester, but I am interested in learning how many lecture hours, small group hours, and lab hours, there are in a given week at UB 🙂 I'd really appreciate the info!

Does SUNY Buffalo send out HOLD/Pre-interview rejections?

I've been asking the same question. Mr. Rosso has stated that this year they have this policy, where in previous years they did not, but to be honest, I have heard of no one receiving a rejection. Only 1) Interviewed, 2) Placed on the Hold list and/or 3) Your application is still under review, because UB takes this "holistic" approach.

II today! When I try to respond to Mr. Rosso's email, gmail tells me that the delivery failed. Is there a different email I am suppose to respond to?

I was able to get a hold of him at [email protected] as listed on their website. I have not been invited for an interview, so I'm not sure if that's different than what they list in that communication...

Hmm, I got it to work with sending a fresh reply email instead of hitting reply to the original email. I wonder why that is the case. Oh, well at least it went through!

Thanks for your help! Yeah, for some reason if i respond directly to the email with the reply button it won't send, but if I send I compose a new email it will even though in both cases I am emailing to the same address. weird

Weird indeed. Maybe it was sent through some sort of listserv or whatnot that doesn't allow replying. Who knows. Congratulations on the II!

received II
congrats! when were you complete?
Also anyone know if there's a status check page for buffalo? I was complete mid-october and still haven't heard anything from this school. OOS/3.8/30MCAT

I was complete late July and only just heard back last week. Exactly when you actually sent in your stuff doesn't matter with Buffalo. They do a random review process so you could hear back at any time. It sucks, but they believe it is a more holistic way of handling applicants. Good luck to you!

I was complete in early July.

Waitlisted boo!
But on a positive note, they gave the impression at the interview that a LOT of candidates are waitlisted, so I won't lose all hope.

Can anyone from the Buffalo area recommend good neighborhoods to live in? Is Craigslist a good source for apartment hunting?

Really anywhere in Amherst is pretty safe. There are apartments on Eggert Rd that are called Collegiate Village which are often advertised, however they are in a very sketchy neighborhood. If you are looking for somewhere nice and don't mind ~ 15 min commute, the Elmwood neighborhood is very nice. It has a bunch of shops/restaurants and the rent isn't bad at all. If you find something on Craiglist and you want to know more about it - just message me. I have lived in Buffalo my whole life.

Awesome, thank you. I will definitely take you up on that offer!

I was complete way back in July, but haven't heard anything yet. IS, MCAT 34, GPA 3.9. Have two acceptances already. However, I'm still very interested in UB Med school. Hope to hear from them soon.

I'm in the same boat. Have 1 acceptance, had 2 more interviews waiting to hear back, and have 2 more interviews coming up. I've been complete since the first week in September. 35, 3.8.

Does buffalo accept grade updates post-waitlist?

Update: They do.

Hey, everyone, complete since 10/14. No word yet. Guess it hasn't really been THAT long yet. I know some people were complete since July with no word yet. Still…frustrating.

Yeah, definitely frustrating... the "random" review hasn't worked out so much in my favor. I'm part of that July crowd. 😛

Has anyone sent post-interview update letters?? Or is it not at all helpful considering the committee ranked us post-interview?

I really hope Dr. Severing release waitlist tiers next month! Good luck everyone.

II! 31-34/3.6-3.8, OOS, Complete in Aug
Excited to have this good news after receiving rejections from the other 3 SUNYs ... all within the last week

Rejected pre-interview today, 3.8+/35. Didn't see that coming. After interviewing at all the other SUNY's, I thought Buffalo would be a cinch.

Sorry to hear that. That is very surprising. In past years (from previous threads), UB did not reject people for the M.D pre-interview until Mid-March. It sounds like they are making some changes in their admissions process. I have to say, I would rather know sooner than later.

Well, you'll def. get in to one of the schools so cheer up buddy! You seem like a stellar candidate based on those stats! Best of luck 🙂

Haha, thanks. Actually, I've been accepted to all three for a few months now (withdrew from all but Stony).👍 Still, I would have liked to see Buffalo because it sells itself as a research-heavy school. I was a bit disappointed at Downstate and Upstate since they talked a lot about community service and public health on interview day, but not much on research.

That's life I guess, good luck to others in the running.

I emailed Rosso and he said don't send in update letters unless you've bee invited to interview, or you're already interviewed.
+1. I sent in an update and got the following response. It didn't make me too hopeful...

"We can only use this update if you are invited for an interview. We will see what happens."

They could do the same as some really catty schools and put a note in your file that you don't follow instructions, and yes there are admissions offices that do that to students who call too much, etc. But chances are it just won't be read.

They may have responded differently for reasons idk. But, why the hell would you not follow the instructions they have clearly stated?

Is there any consensus on how long it takes to hear back from Buffalo with a decision post-interview? I am interviewing next week on Wednesday and was hoping to know before my next interview at Stony Brook on Feb 7th so I can (hopefully) withdraw from Stony Brook if accepted at Buffalo. Would sure be nice to save myself a 14hr round trip drive!

I heard back about 15 days post-interview, but they may have had the date set ahead of time.
