2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CONGRATS MAN!!! Maybe we'll be classmates lol

And yea we have to take a CPR course, I'm not sure if there is one offered by Downstate but it's a simple class for a few hours on a Saturday usually

Yeah could be! I'm strongly considering Downstate, there are probably only 3-4 schools I would consider over here. You can't beat the price, and its so local for me!

Haha same, considering 2-3 other schools but I love Downstate

Congrats to all who were accepted! But for those of us waiting to hear back, anyone receive an II recently?

I recently received an II this week. Complete beginning of september. IS. GPA>3.6, MCAT>38. Interview date was given to me as the end of November.

Has anyone who interviewed on 10/7 received a response (acceptance, WL, rejection)?

Can someone explain this to me..I had everything in during early August and I called to confirm that they had everything needed..and yet I received a "complete" email less than 2 weeks ago.

ANyone know if there are any merit scholarships available? If so, do we have to apply for one or are you automatically considered?

According to the trend on this thread, I should receive a notification of my status (post-interview, 10/16) this week. I hope it's good news:luck::xf:

For those who mailed in their acceptance reply form via USPS, did you get any kind of confirmation from the admissions office? I'm starting to get paranoid.

I hope you're right! I thought 6 weeks was the right count. Did you look at this year's trend or last years? Best of luck!

no, but i'm also wondering....

I called and they confirmed they received it, but said there will be no email coming until later... I guess next emails we will get will be shadow a student and research day

Nope. But I called them and they said they got it.

Does anyone know what percentage of interviewed applicants are accepted at Downstate?

Downstate doesn't report its stats to US News so no one knows.

They interview ~1100 people for a class of 185, and since most schools seem to accept between 2-3x their class size I'm guessing the acceptance rate is somewhere between 30-45% like at most other schools. Might be on the lower end of that range for OOS kids though.

SR: 10/28
II: 11/12

interviewing mid-December

I was complete here pretty early but have heard NOTHING from Downstate since. Anyone on the same boat?

Congrats! I was complete 2 weeks before you but your MCAT is wayyy higher. Just goes to show MCAT>Gpa wah :'( lol

Hah! it's weird cause it's been nothing but crickets from the schools I was complete at in September...

It says my interview is at 1 pm but I should be there at 11:30 am. Does anyone know when the day actually ends?

has anyone had any luck sending updates to downstate? (ie. recent publication) thanks!

I sent an email update to my interviewer, but I didn't receive a confirmation . :/ I haven't received any news yet regarding my status, post interview (10/16).

I sent one about 2 months ago but i don't think i received a confirmation email about it. I did call them prior to sending it to make sure it was ok and they said it was fine and that it'd be added to my file.

I got an II about 2 weeks ago so it's difficult to say to what extent that letter helped.

Well that was the shortest tour I've ever been on. Didn't really see much of the school or hospital unlike many of the other schools that I've interviewed at, which is somewhat disappointing. But heck, the my fellow interviewees were really fun, especially after I started breaking the ice early on. Speaking of which, three of them were from California, which seems to be the same for a lot of my NY interviews. What's up with that?

I feel like it's self selection, California pre-meds are most likely to apply OOS due to how hard it is to get into Cali schools. Also they probably eat you guys up because they know you're most likely to actually move that far lol. Just my 2 cents

Accepted! postmarked: 11/15 and letter date: 11/16, interviewed: 10/16

So excited, top choice!

OOS

Personal question if you don't mind me asking: Why is it your top choice? It's a state school that costs just as much as a private school when OOS. Why not another NY school be top choice, or even the ones in Manhattan if you like the city? I'm assuming your state school is either very selective (Cali for example) or you don't have one...

-City (I was born in a city and prefer to attend a school in the city. The location reminded me of home)
-Curriculum (It's pretty standard but a good amount of electives in 3rd/4th year. The clinical exposure is an attractive aspect for me)
-Attitude of Student Body/Faculty/Staff (The students appeared to be very chill)
-Atmosphere (As a minority, I didn't feel uncomfortable or out-of-place. This is a extremely big deal to me because there is not point in attending a "top" school if I'm constantly judged by people.)
-Diversity

Yes, the cost for the 1st year is standard for any private school. However I'm allowed to switch to new york residence after a year. I need to have a year's worth of apartment notes. Yes, I'm also from California but I rather attend school in a different state.

I received a very strange email today with a link to another MD/MPH application page and request for a second application fee. I haven't been accepted to Downstate but I have interviewed / am on hold for spring review. Did anyone else get this email?

Yes! I also applied MD/MPH but have not heard about my interview status post my secondary being complete. I thought it might be a glitch or system switchover because I had never logged in with the new username and password they provided in the email, and once I got into the portal, it showed the record of when I paid the secondary fee in the past. Not sure what it all means but just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

Got the spring hold email yesterday. Oh well, would have loved to live and study in brooklyn.

I got this same e-mail. I haven't received anything about an acceptance or waitlist though

Has anyone received a II after receiving the "send in fall grades" e-mail? still waiting for the end of December to finally get those grades

I had a request for spring quarter grades from last year near mid September so I was able to turn them in right away and got an interview 3 weeks later.

I submitted about 7 days ago. Stats: cGPA: 3.68, sGPA: 3.88, MCAT: 29. I had an interview here last year and got rejected. This year I reapplied and got into a Floridian MD program. I'm still hoping to get an interview here and redeem myself! I really love this school (and the neighborhood) and I hope that they give me another shot

Just withdrew from interview scheduled for Dec. 5th.
Hope one of you get the interview slot.

on hold for spring consideration post interview. anyone know approximately how many people get in from this list?
