2013-2014 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all! I interviewed on Oct. 22 and have yet to hear back. Should I be concerned or should I just be patient? They said 6-8 weeks would be the return time. Thanks in advance!

congrats! they're sending out invitations today though? I would think they would all be out of office for the holidays.

I was REALLY surprised too! When I replied to confirm I was worried I wouldn't hear back and I would have to spend days worried that it was some sort of bizarre mistake, but no: I'm scheduled for January 28.

Just wanted to add in case you haven't been to Atlantic Terminal before. When you get off the LIRR and enter the station you walk to the left to the subway. After you get through the turnstile, go down the stairs and make a right you can take either 2 or 5 (towards brooklyn college) and get off at Winthrop Street. From there its a quick walk over. The front of Downstate (on Clarkson) has a bunch of construction so you have to enter through a side entrance on New York Ave between Clarkson and Lenox. There should be signs on the sidewalk and when you walk in there should be a security guard at the entrance to help direct you where you need to go.

If the side entrance is closed for some reason you can enter through the basic science building across from the dorm on Lenox. Again a security guard is at the entrance who can direct you where to go.

When you head back you can ask for a shuttle to the train if you want and all trains (2 & 5) from Winthrop take you back to where you started.

Congrats on your interview and best of luck!

PS. The entrance for subway going back is at a different spot fyi

This is very helpful. I will definitely print this out and have it with me when I leave in the morning of the interview day. Thank you!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have an interview and I'm coming from out of state. I'm trying to make proper travel arrangements. If my interview is at 1, what would be a reasonable time to expect to be done by? What flight time would be appropriate?

I know my interview day ended promptly at 2:30. I had a flight for 5ish, and I was able to get to the airport in time. Although I did not take public transportation, I was driven by my relatives.

I'm tempted to make a 2018 class page, but I'm not sure if the previous class makes it or incoming students?!

I had filled out and sent in a secondary way back. They sent me an email this past week asking for an update of my Fall semester grades (I did well 3.7 in some really tough courses like Quantum and graduate biochemistry). Anyone in a similar position? Does anyone know what my chances are of getting an interview invite? Thanks

I don't think anyone here can speak to what your chances are. As to general consensus, the toughness of classes you take really does not really matter much, as there is no way to know how difficult e.g. your graduate biochem class is to another's general biology 1A class that gives out say 15% As. But good job on the grades! Good luck my friend.

Accepted via snail mail today! Interviewed 11/20.

Congrats! Waiting patiently, interviewed 12/2....

Congrats! when was it postmarked, interviewed the same day and hoping for good news

Same. We all secretly know each other it was a pretty small interview group 😳 I'm hoping that if we were wait listed or rejected we would have heard by now since those decisions come by email instead of snail mail.

Yea I hope we hear good news soon, this waiting is killing me

I interviewed the day before you, still waiting to hear back as well. Does anyone know if they've been sending out post-interview rejections? I'm beginning to think this long silence could mean a rejection since people that interviewed after us have been accepted and been placed on hold.

It was postmarked 12/24. I hope you hear good news! I was one of the guys from California in our group.

Anyone know if January/February interviewees are at a significant disadvantage here? Based on previous year's threads, seems like most late interviewees are placed on alternate list or hold for spring...

correlation does not equal causation....

I think many other schools are also quite similar. It's just that interviewees are competing for even fewer seats available, so getting accepted will be more challenging.

Just got accepted, interview date 11/18, postmarked 12/24.

Now where should I go, downstate or stonybrook...

I don't think it's necessarily a big disadvantage...I guess I've just met enough people who were accepted at places they interviewed in even very late in the spring...so personally I wouldn't sweat it.

I interviewed 11/5 and have yet to hear anything back... starting to get antsy as well. Anyone else from early November hear back from Downstate?

anyone receive interviews after sending in their request for fall 2013 grades? how soon after you sent them in? i was just able to get mine in 12/23 after they were all posted

I sent a screenshot of my grades on Christmas day. Hopefully I'll get an II....

Anyone from the December interviews hear back yet? :/

nope! I interviewed 12/10. We'll probably find out pretty late in the month according to last year's thread

nothing yet, like java said we probably wont find out until sometime around the end of month maybe even early feb

Also waiting patiently....last year's thread for early December iis seems to have decisions come out in mid January (earliest)....1 more week..plus plus plus.

Anyone else interviewing tomorrow afternoon?

I have been reading the previous year's thread about DS and so excited to visit here!

I just received all of my Fall grades. For those you that had to send your grades how did you send them? screenshot or PDF of unofficial transcript?

Interviewed on Nov 5 and no response yet.... my neurosis is killing me.

Sigh...
The wait is agonizing, comon Downstate!
Show me some love!

Are you thinking of calling at all?
I've called, they simply say "when a decision is made, you will know"... Kinda thinking I'm going to get rejected at this point. No one in last year's thread was accepted past 9 weeks afaik

though I REALLLLLLY hope I get accepted. I really liked Downstate after my interview and Brooklyn is a great place to live

Anyone know when the last batch of letters were sent out?

Don't sweat it too much yet. I interviewed here last week and was warned that it would take at least 6 weeks or so before I hear back. They insisted that the timeline for response has nothing to do with what decision awaits you, and added that they are even more backed up now that they are coming back from a holiday break.

Just keep calm and carry on. Good luck.

Hey there, I'm an MS3...I know someone from Five Towns who is commuting in by LIRR...it takes her about 1.5 hours door to door (maybe a little less). From her place to Atlantic Ave then down to Winthrop on the 2/5.

Hello! How have people been receiving acceptances? Mail or email?

Doesn't seem like it, so I'm confused. Maybe things have changed? Or maybe people who've been wait listed just haven't been posting.

My understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong, anyone) is that they review their post-interview holds in the spring and accept, reject, or alternate list them. And then the alternate list starts moving once they've reviewed all their post-interview holds.

That's why I'm wondering if anyone has been put on the alternate list who wasn't on post-interview hold for spring review first.
