2013-2014 Texas Tech - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No big deal, im not worried. I think worst case scenario, our bad interviews will just 'wash-out' with our good interviews.
It was funny, bc they specifically told us that morning that the purpose of the interview was to gauge our communication skills and maturity ONLY.
Does anybody know if any interviewers at Tech are also on the adcom?

When I interviewed here last year both of my interviewers were super chill and I was waitlisted. This year they were definitely tougher and I was accepted lol. I had also heard that UTH interviews were very conversational and was shocked with intense, stress-interview questions...I guess it just depends! They have so many people interviewing applicants I'm sure they can't all fit into the same mold.

For those who interviewed for the FMAT program and got accepted to Texas Tech, does it mean you got accepted to FMAT as well? Or do they do a separate round of acceptances for FMAT later?

I did Early Decision and FMAT, so it might be a little different for you but I got an acceptance email to the med school on September 17th then a different email with my FMAT acceptance on October 15th. From my understanding and correspondence with the admissions office, you get two different emails. Good luck!

For the FMAT, Dr. Jones basically told me that anyone who wanted to be a part of it could. They accept up to 15 students, but they have never maxed out. They use the FMAT to try to lure some top applicants to their school. Some get accepted to Tech only, while some (the top applicants they are trying to lure) get accepted to Tech & FMAT. But the program doesn't start until the summer between ms1 and ms2. So anyone at Tech in their first year can get into the program (bc there has always been extra seats in the past).

It is actually surprising, bc I initially thought that the program was competitive and hard to get into. But (so far) it appears as though if you want to be a part of it, you get to as long as you get accepted to Tech.

I called the admissions office incognito to check the status of prematches.... and apparently MOST if not ALL the prematches have gone out. So until people start withdrawing, they will not be offering any more spots. ( they might have a very minor number left for the post 11/15 interviewees)

👎 February here we come

Thanks for doing it Gandalf. Next is calling El Paso, A&M and UTMB

Well that's pretty crappy

Keep in mind that it will inherently get better.
A lot of folks are holding prematch offers at 4+ schools. Once they decide on one school, that opens up 3+ spots helping out 3+ students.

so if 100 people are holding 4 offers, that means that 300 spots will open up by the match.

Did you ask them how many total prematches they give out? Like if they give out the full 180 prematches or if they only give say 100 (and save the rest for match) ?

I asked but the staff member did not know. All she said was that all the prematches have gone out. You can always call them and ask, since its likely that youll probably be speaking to another person who may have more information.

Hopefully Sector might chime in on that issue.

That's what the admissions staff said. Obviously if people decline, more will be invited.

Man that really sucks. I really don't get anything about this whole process (I haven't received any pre-matches). My interviewer at A&M literally said (and I'll quote him exactly): "I'll tell you right now, we're going to accept you. Congratulations, you're in."

Yet nothing from A&M. wtf! I hope you're having better luck than me man.

ah but he didn't say WHEN. 🙂

I had the same experience with tech and galveston but nothing from them either. Its really early in the season though so although it certainly sucks we have lots of time

I think interviewers that say that to you are sincere. it's just that the waiting is so long it makes us second guess ourselves. hang in there miss chievous! I have faith in ya!

In the wise words of John 'Bluto' Blutarsky:
'What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?...Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst."

For everyone that is waiting for prematch offers, I emailed the director of admissions, and she said that 160 prematch offers have gone out, but that there will be batches going out every week until December 31. So don't worry guys we still have a long while!!! Hope this calms a lot of you!!

To anyone that has sent in the acceptance forms, did you get any kind of confirmation that they were received?

I haven't gotten any confirmation and I sent them in the first day I got them.

They have added more slots to the FMAT program each year. There are 9 of us MS1s currently in the program. They will open the application for the remaining 3 spots next month. I think it is very easy to get into before first year. Who knows how it will play out for the remaining 3 openings?

Did anyone who was notified of a scholarship in the initial acceptance email receive the follow up email with the terms of the scholarship?

I still haven't received anything and I wonder if it would be inappropriate to call them.

You're not alone. However, if you do call, I would like to know what you find out.

I called admissions to confirm that they received everything, and they were able to check for me - the fee, the paperwork, the background check stuff, etc. Very friendly admissions office!

I was accepted OOS on 10/15 and didn't receive terms of the scholarship until 11/15. At one point I called them and they said they were just figuring out the terms.

Thanks for letting us know. Hopefully it means we will hear back about scholarships in the next couple of weeks.

I got in on 10/15 and got the scholarship email on 11/18. Although, I'm MD/MBA so it is probably different from a regular scholarship/OOS scholarship.

To other MD/MBAs: Have y'all done anything about applying to the graduate school? The acceptance email said there would be additional info coming from the graduate school but I haven't seen anything...

I tried starting the business school app but ran into some info I don't have (an R#? and a few other things). I called to ask, but they told be it was due in the spring so I've put it on hold. From their responses, it seems like they hadn't begun addressing those questions. They're entirely in application/ acceptance mode (for which I don't blame them). I'll take a look at it again today and maybe we can figure things out together.

Okay cool, thanks!

Sorry to post so much today, but I visited Lubbock over the break and it's starting to feel real. Does anyone know which parts of town are safest? I've heard that the center of town and the east side can be rough.

I'm don't know much about Lubbock yet but am getting tired of people (who have never been to Lubbock) telling me how crappy it is and that they're sorry I'll have to live there. I think it's pretty okay! I went to school in Norman, OK, though, and it has a similar feel.

I did some apartment hunting last year when I was waitlisted and they're super reasonable! I may be able to get a 2 bedroom and use one as an office/study room

the school, my apartment, and a grocery store is all that I'll need for the next few years anyway! (only half joking)

Anyone know when the next round of prematch offers are coming out?

Anyone know if TX Tech Lubbock is still sending out interviews? And their last interview date?

I believe that the last interview date is still supposed to be next Friday, Dec. 13th. At this point, I believe that pretty much all of the II's have gone out since it's so soon

In past years, they've added some extra January dates, but this year they added some extra Wednesday dates earlier on so they may not need to do that

Of course, medical students are usually last to know information like this so it may be worth a quick phone call to admissions!

Still waiting for an II here but it looks like I'm probably not going to get one anytime soon.

I've sent two letter of interests earlier (1st - one to two months ago, 2nd - 2 weeks ago) but received no response. I would still love to interview and learn more about this school.

Do you think it's worth sending another one this week (in case someone may have cancelled) to show how I'm still genuinely interested?

I sent my earlier LOIs to Kim Peck but she hasn't responded to either. Who would you address it to?

Aw man, I saw some invites being sent out in early January last year so I thought we still had another month left. Oh well, thanks for the info!

I received an II via email on 11/26. The only available date was 12/6.
IS trad with gap year, ORM, 3.59c/3.41s, 32

I called the admissions office and they said the last date to interview is next Friday, and they "don't think any more invites will be sent."

Woohoo! First rejection of the cycle! Stay tuned for more.

Does anyone know when scholarship information is going to be sent out? Also at the interview they said they would call you but from the acceptance email it seems like it will be via email instead...
