2013-2014 University of Nebraska Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviewed October 18th and have yet to hear anything back. I'm thinking I won't hear anything until March 15th upon which I assume I will be watilisted(hopefully top half). Seems like a ridiculous amount of time to hear back (almost 1/2 a year after interviewing). Anybody know how the adcom is progressing?

If any of you live near the Med Center and have sent in your deposit, you can go get your student ID. I did this so I could workout at the weight room for free since I work there. Also, does anyone know anything about a FB group?
Where at UNMC do you go to pick up your student ID?

I haven't heard anything about a facebook group, but we should definitely get one going.

rejected...just got the letter today. I'm seriously confused and heartbroken. 🙁

IS, 3.89 cGPA, 3.82 sGPA, 29 MCAT

Sorry to hear that! Do they seem to be going in the chronological order of the interview dates? I haven't noticed anyone who interviewed past November commenting on an admissions decision.

That's a tough break, it looks like you really put in the work. : (

Make sure you schedule an appointment to talk over what was lacking in your application with Gigi Rogers. She's very straight-forward and helpful. The sooner the better, as it'll give you more time to work on what you lacked for next year's app.

I didn't get in last year, but I did everything she told me I could to work on my application.
Got my acceptance early January for this year! 🙂 Hang in there. There's always next year.

Also, does anyone want to PM me their facebook info? It won't let me make a group without adding at least one person.

Anybody here waitlisted last cycle?

I sure was. I received my waitlist letter last cycle in the last batch obviously, and it told me I was in the bottom half of the waitlist. I scheduled my exit interview with Gigi soon after that. I absolutely second what AshMoff4 said. If you are waitlisted or rejected, schedule an exit interview and talk it over with Gigi. She is an amazing resource and she will tell you straight up exactly what the committee will expect should you decide to reapply next year.

I met with her, followed her advice, and I received my acceptance letter a few weeks ago on my second application. I know it's discouraging, but if you step up to the challenge and really take to heart the advice of the committee, you will likely get a much more favorable outcome the next time around.

I'm sorry to hear that @Zelda840. =( I wish you luck going forward. Does anyone have any insight to share on the UNMC/Creighton comparison...besides tuition differences? I'm having a really hard time deciding between them.

This late in the game and hearing nothing back , is it safe to say "wait listed"?!

@spooty1189 I was. Bottom half. Met with Gigi and did everything she told me to do. Got my acceptance last week. @Zelda840 everyone is right, definitely set up an exit interview with Gigi and it will for sure be in your best interest next time you apply. Good luck!

thanks @WooglinsWill for your comments! Just going by interview day Creighton felt so much more home-y but you're right resource-wise UNMC leads the race. Def taking your comments into consideration

Does anyone know a person (or yourself) who interviewed in December (or later) that has already received a decision? The only people I see reporting in this thread are November or earlier interviews.

I will throw my 2 cents out here. I applied last cycle and was bottom half waitlisted. Applied again this cycle after following my exit interview with Gigi and doing everything she said to improve my standing. Interviewed 11/15. Still no reply from them. I have heard from multiple people involved with AdCom that they do review files at random. I've considered pregaming my trips to the mailbox at this point...

I wonder if they rank all of the applications on a rolling basis, and then send acceptances out in the order in which they are ranked. That would make sense of the seemingly random process when only using interview date to forecast "where they are" in evaluating the applicant pool.

At this point, I couldn't even try to explain how the adcom at UNMC works. Acceptances are all over the place. It's safe to say that GPA/MCAT and interview date don't play a role on when you hear back. So far as I can tell, they use a random number generator to evaluate when they review applications.

Hang in there guys! I know I would be going out of my mind if I hadn't heard back yet.

Any news? Is admissions still handing out acceptances?
Didn't even know this was an option here at UNMC, but I received an accepted alternate position. Apparently the majority offered this position are fully accepted before June. If I do not matriculate this year, I have an automatic acceptance next year (deferred admission). Very excited, and will be attending (just hope it is this year and not next)!

I didn't know that was an option either. I have never heard of that before. Not the worst position to be in, right?

Congrats!! How did you find out? Snail mail?
I found out via AAMC background check email. I received the email on February 21 and didn't receive my letter until the following Tuesday afternoon. After I got the email I went ahead and called admissions.

No, it certainly is not a bad position at all. I am very grateful. Best of luck to you!

Does anyone know what the chance of matriculating is for those placed on the top half of the alternate list? I've heard both that there is a very good chance and also that the alternate list in general is a death sentence.

I was told last year by the admissions office that 12 out of the last 13 years people were taken off of the bottom half of the alternate list. I don't know how deep into the bottom half, but this is what I was told.

Anyone else get the accreditation issues letter? Does this sort of thing happen often? This is the only place I saw it referred to on their website: http://www.unmc.edu/news.cfm?match=12519

The letter said UNMC was recently warned that their were a few "mostly procedural" areas of concern following a full scale review of their accreditation but that they will maintain full accreditation and do not expect any ramifications to students.

It was a little unsettling, but it sounds pretty innocuous. Anyone have more insight?

This is all I could find about it:

"Largely, the issues identified by the LCME are procedural in nature," Dr. Britigan said. "Nonetheless, they are required and expected of an organization that provides the outstanding level of medical education that we seek to deliver."

The seven citations are summarized into three areas:

  • Identification and documentation of specific outcome-based objectives for the medical education program as a whole.
  • Improved assessment of student clinical exposures and measurement of student knowledge, attitudes and skills.
  • Documentation of a comprehensive review of the entire curriculum in addition to our current practice of reviewing each year of the curriculum separately.
Dr. Britigan said that the college will form task forces to address the areas of noncompliance, as well as three others areas in which the LCME noted that the college is in "compliance, with a need for monitoring." These areas include the nature of feedback to students after examinations, longer hours for the student health clinic and a better awareness of the university policy on student mistreatment.

Sooo does anybody else have a hell of a time using the email system or is my internet just slow as butt?

I haven't had any issues. Probably just your internet. Has anybody received any word on financial aid? I know scholarships are awarded sometime soon but have not heard much from FA office or admissions.

Has anyone on the alternate list received any word yet? I was told there would be movement around May 15th

I still haven't heard anything from admissions about any alternate list movement. Would think someone should be hearing something soon. Has anybody talked to admissions to see what they are saying?

A friend of mine received his acceptance letter yesterday after being on the alternate list. I am still waiting for mine. Does anybody know how to determine where you are located on that alternate list? I am starting to get nervous that I will not be admitted this year and will have to make other plans for a full year.

Scholarships have started going out.

Any idea where your friend was on the alternate list? Top half, bottom half ?

I would also like to know this. Any movement is good movement as far as I'm concerned.
