2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I too received a phone call from Columbia for an interview on Monday and the woman who called me was named Muriel (or something similar). She didn't say anything about HR. Maybe they were looking for more information from you? That's frustrating not knowing and having to wait around to find out if it's good news or nothing, I hope you hear something soon!

I have had two sites email me for clarification about my application. One saw that my supplemental was missing and asked if I had it (which I did, I guess there was a glitch in the APPIC system). Then today I got another email asking about some assessment experience. I don't want to jump to anything, but I hope this is a good sign that they are showing some interest in my application!

And the maddening silence continues!!!

Agreed. Its such a scary position to be in, because we all care so much about this. Its a strange balance of holding out hope, accepting our lack of control, doing what we can to be the best candidates we can be... hence, I'm practicing a lot of ACT and distress tolerance 🙂

I hope everyone gives themselves permission to step away from the technology tonight and tomorrow, maybe even through the weekend (ok, maybe that's asking too much...)

AND, I hope that everyone can embrace the Thanksgiving holiday to center on gratitude for being at the place we are, almost done our doctorates in clinical psych, and hopefully in touch with some loved ones etc. that add to your lives! We WILL get through this stressful process because of all those supportive factors! 👍

Take care all. Happy thanksgiving.

Yeah, you'd think they'd just send out invites and rejections all at once, rather than cruelly making people wait around to find out.

And the maddening silence continues!!! I see that Utah State University sent out invitations.... I suppose I can assume I won't be moving to Utah next year. 🙁 On the plus side, Nebraska hasn't rejected me yet, so maybe an interview offer is coming! I'm keeping my chin up and trying to remember that 17 of my sites haven't contacted ANYONE yet.

Best of luck everyone! Have a happy Thanksgiving and try not to let the stress interfere with your holiday. 🙂

don't lose hope--I just got an invite to a site that sent it's invites out last week!

Hello: has anyone heard from Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital. They were to notify folks today. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!

My friend applied there and didn't hear anything either so it's not only you! Good luck 🙂

didn't they extend their deadline post-Sandy? if so they may also tack a few extra days on to notifying folks....

Ok so I have heard that when one has one's interview matters. Word in my street is that there is no primacy effect, only a recency effect, and one should schedule their favorite sites towards the end. Have others found that to be the case?

Of couse that is easier said than done (if it is true): if you applied across the country, the cost issue can really matter (saving bucks by scheduling interviews you have to fly to later as opposed to in 2 weeks can add up), we don't know when we'll get invites from our "top" sites and when interviews will be so who knows if we can keep later slots open, and of course your pre-interview rankings can change quite a bit post interview.

any folks have any data on strategies to schedule interviews, what your experience was if you matched, etc? There are so many factors to take into account!

I honestly think it's going to be so site-dependent that I wouldn't trouble myself with trying to play this sort of guessing game with scheduling (the process is already stressful enough as is). I matched at the very first site with which I interviewed (and they offered their interviews fairly early on overall).

Thanks so much that is helpful! And in that vein, what would you suggest would be helpful to keep on the top of one's mind when scheduling interviews? Any insights you gleaned from the process that you wish you'd known before?

Some of the recs that have come up before and that were helpful to me were: take whatever non-January and/or non-Friday/Monday dates you can. There are only so many weekends in January, and they can fill up quick. Print out a calendar that you use only to keep up with interviews. You can also track potential dates if sites provide that info so you can plan ahead a bit. Respond to dates offers ASAP, as they can fill up in only a couple hours.

I promised myself I would not check this thread today. It is 7:54AM and here I am. Ugh! This is such a painful process.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Hope you all have a relaxing break.

Here's wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, enjoying a few days off, and waking up to interview offers on Monday!!! :luck:

Hello 🙂 I was invited to Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital track at Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Consortium on 11/21/12

Got my call yesterday, inviting me for an interview in January! Happy Thanksgiving to me! 🙂

They did. This was sent in the email from match news at appic on 10/31
"In anticipation of power outages, Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital will be extending the application due date to November 9th. Applicants will be notified of their interview status by email on November 28th."
:xf: and wait

Hi all,

I just received an interview invite from NYU-Bellevue's Child Track! It was a personalized email and interviews are 12/5 from 9-5. So exciting!!!!

It's listed as notifying people via phone calls....could anyone give any details (what time they called, etc)? Thanks!

personalized email. invites started going out 11/16, so don't give up hope if you aren't notified the same day others are!

Generic email invite to McLean Hospital for dates of:

Just received my first notification for an interview at NYU/Bellevue (Adult Track), personalized email, interview date is 12/19 from 9-1. Woohooo!!!!!!! SO excited!:highfive:

Have any of the Vanderbilt - VA Consortium offers been for primary placement at the Vanderbilt counseling center? Thanks!

Generic email for open house at the VA Puget Sound, Seattle on January 8th from 8:30am-4:30pm!

Generic rejection email from the VA Puget Sound, Seattle.

Hey everyone. This may be a silly question, but I got an invite to interview at an open house for a site that's across the country (hence, very expensive flight cost) and their interview date conflicts with another interview I have. Any suggestions for what to include in the email letting them know I won't be able to attend? I would imagine that mentioning the financial burden or that it conflicts with another interview is unnecessary or potentially a turn-off. What do folks usually say in these emails?

Congrats to all you Bellevue folks!

Does anyone know if Bellevue gives rolling invites or if its all at once? Thanks!!

Thanks! I actually don't know. I was only offered one interview date for 12/5 (for child track) and the director stated that it would be difficult to make arrangements for alternate interview dates. Good luck!

13 sites left to hear back from, good or bad. I hope we all start hearing more this upcoming week. Good luck everyone!

So when does the "surge" in invites/rejections typically happen? I have a feeling next week will be more active then this week was, but I suppose most sites wait until mid Dec.

Based only on my own experience last year, there seemed to be one surge right after Thanksgiving, and then another 11th-hour surge over the last few days before Dec. 15th.

Hey,

Re: whether sites invite on a rolling basis, I would think it depends on the site.

Re: columbia/NYP, I would think Columbia/New York Presbyterian, however, I simply post what others relay to me so don't know for sure...

I haven't heard from Greystone Park yet. I'm assuming they will take longer to respond due to Sandy. I also wonder if they don't always adhere to the dates posted on the website

Just b/c you haven't received an interview, it doesn't mean that you won't later. They may process them on a rolling basis, so they responded to a person who applied earlier. I would think that you can't assume that you've been rejected until you get it in writing.

I applied there as well. I figured that I'll go if I won't get many other interviews, but I'll skip it if I get enough others. I'd like to check out the facility, but Im not sure if I'll afford to fly there. Again, it will depend on how many other trips I'll have to take.

I made this mistake last year, told all my family and close friends about where I was applying and all about the internship process. Made it so much more difficult when I didn't match and had to try and explain that! Made the decision this year not to tell anyone anything really, except of course my fiance because of our financial/living arrangements. If you don't want to talk about it, just say you haven't heard anything yet. In all reality, you probably won't by then either, since sites tend to send out more invites/rejects after the holidays!
I applied to 20 sites, but still haven't heard anything, not even an acknowledgement that my stuff was received. I don't think it means anything, it's still pretty early.

Detroit get a bad rap, but it is a very livable (affordable) city....at least for an intern year.
I live in the suburb of Detroit, and I love my city! Whoever ends up here will have a great experience!

Cornell Medical Center is a different NYP hospital. Both Columbia and Cornell hospitals have internships.

Does anyone know if they are still participating in the match this year? I haven't been able to add them to my list of designated sites all week and their deadline isn't until 12/3. They don't even have a website so all I can go by is their APPIC listing or email the director.

What are people's thoughts on when to book flights for long-distance interviews?

I am on the east coast and I applied to a number of sites on the west coast, but only one of the programs has notified applicants so far -- at least according to this thread. I received an invitation and would like to purchase my ticket for the interview date, but ideally I would also like to coordinate visits as much as possible so I'm not flying coast-to-coast more than necessary.

How are others handling this? Is it ever appropriate to contact a site to let them know I will be in their (general) area that week and am wondering when they will be notifying applicants? I don't want to be pushy, and I also don't want to hold off on making travel arrangements if it turns out that the other sites aren't planning to interview me. Based on last year's thread, it seems that a couple of my sites didn't send out notifications until Dec, and by that point the tickets will be so much more expensive. For all of us who applied to geographically-diverse programs, this process is going to be extremely pricey as it is.

Thanks!
