2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
SUNY Upstate Child Track

Hi All.

Is anyone with an interview date of December 20th or 18th willing to switch with me for January 17th? She took a long time to respond and I can no longer make the January option.

Please let me know! I would really appreciate it.

Awesome! Good luck, I was hopin' for good news from them but got slammed with a nice, generic rejection. Glad you got your breath back, lol 🙂

Thanks, baylordude, this one was a real nail-biter for me...the anticipation was killing me. I appreciate your thumbs up! I saw you're really interested in the army internships. I'd love to hear how those interviews go. I was considering the Navy and Army - San Diego, Hawaii...but I decided I maybe was not cut out for the full experience - deployment, physical demands, etc. Have you been considering a career in military psychology a long time?

Very nice, personalized message from Millard Health Centre (Edmonton) stating that they will not be filling their three internship positions for the 2013-14 internship year. I'm bummed about that! The site looked great. At least it was a non-rejection rejection!

Received the same disappointing email. Better than a rejection, I guess!

Was invited via personal email to Community Reach Center for dates 1/10, 1/17, or 1/24

Was rejected via generic email to Casa Pacifica.

2 invites, 3 rejections, 10 waiting

These forums are going to blowing up in the next couple of days, which is perfect for a compulsive checker such as myself.

Has anyone heard from Buffalo, Coatesville, or Memphis VA yet? Still waiting....

I am still waiting to hear from Coatesville... Also, I saw on the master list someone received a rejection from Pacific U., has anyone heard anything else either way from them? Just curious! Good luck everyone 🙂

That is very good to know! Phew, I am relieved then, as well!

Yea, my friends and I would get glared at in town and on the bus at BSU. Back when I lived there if you were not white and christian you were out of place.

Personalized email non-interview (can't bring myself to say rejection) from UC Davis CAARE. Super bummed as I really like that site, but not surprised as they sent out invites last week.

Busy day for me!

rough day today. rejections from wichita collaborative internship consortium, u. of miami/ jmh, u. penn. i am very grateful to have seven interviews, but would love to have just one of my "reach" sites give me a chance. maybe i'm asking for too much given the current climate.
+pity+ good luck to all of us this week!

Thanks! Are you going to contact them if you don't hear today?? I just want to know! 🙂

I'll probably contact them tomorrow morning if I don't hear anything considering they technically have until midnight to notify. Good luck! :xf:

Somehow I missed NC department of corrections, looks like a cool site. Is the Minnesota site the DJJ?

I have a question...Is it better to interview in person or a phone interview when you can choose? I set up an in person interview; however, I am now thinking a phone interview would be better as I would be traveling out of state. Is it in bad form to call them back and ask if it would be possible to change to a phone interview? Any advice would be great!

Hello All-

I am visiting Chicago for an interview later in January and I was hoping some of you guys who are knowledgeable of the city could point me in the direction of some hotels and/or neighborhoods that are decent???

Thanks in advance!

Metropolitan Detention Center? There are several BOP sites that look nice. Can't beat federal benefits, possibility of job offers, and retirement at age 50, but it is the big time as far as forensics goes, huh?

This is by no means a fact, but I have heard from one of my friends that interviewing on the phone is pretty hard and possibly limits your ability to present yourself at your best. Again, this is one person's experience at one site. I have made it a point to only schedule in-person interviews even though I'm flying all over the country. Of course that's not possible for everyone.

As to calling and changing it...I'd say it depends on how much you prioritize that program. If it's towards the bottom of your list and you have many other interviews, it's probably ok to risk it. I'm sure you can always find a good way to put it that is diplomatic and re-emphasizes your interest in their internship.

Let us know how it goes.

No news at all today.... Still waiting on 13 more sites. Can't wait until this part of the process is over... so I can start counting down the days until Feb. 22.......🙄

Didn't apply there, but I bet it's a great site. As far as benefits go, yes, I find all of that appealing, but such sites can be pretty hardcore depending their level of security. I worked at a maximum security psychiatric penitentiary and witnessed some not-so-fun stuff. It's all about how much you're willing to stomach, I guess.

Another rejection from Advocate Family Care Network in Chicago.

I'm at 6 Rej and 2 invitations with 14 left.

I'm starting to get a little stabby. I'm glad I don't see clients the rest of the week.

I just wanted to say, I think sites who have a streamline process in terms of sending out notification and scheduling interviews are much appreciated. For instance, USC which has an online scheduling AND Saturday interview day options totally rock. Why can't more sites be like that? I bet if APPIC wanted to, they can set up the application process so that when you receive an interview invitation, you just log onto the portal, go to that designation and then pick your interview days/slots/etc.

In other news, surprisingly, I'm only down to 3 sites left to hear from, of those, 2 likely rejections (Mailman and UNC). I'm just glad I heard soon enough from the others so that I can give advanced notice for time off.

Which UNC? I applied to both and received an interview from Charlotte. I have not heard from UNC- Chapel Hill so I am expecting a rejection as well.

Very kind but non-personalized invitation to interview at Western Youth Services. Dates are:
Thursday, 1/10
Friday, 1/18
Thursday, 1/24
Monday, 1/28

Email invitation to interview via phone/skype with Ball State University! Interview dates are 1/4, 1/7, and 1/11.

Sooooo, do you guys think it would be appropriate to respond to my rejection emails with:

"WHHHHHYYYYYYYY?"
or
"SO YOU ARE SAYING I AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH? IS THAT IT?"
or
"THANK YOU FOR DESTROYING MY DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE"

?

The last one. Definitely.

I have held back this urge for every single on of my rejections. Thank you for posting this. I needed this laugh.

As much as I like the first-come-first-served, online scheduling, those who work all day and are not in front of a computer are pretty much guaranteed to get the shaft with this type of system (by that I mean left with the days no one else wants). Maybe if the portals opened the morning after the interview notifications go out, it would be a bit more fair, I think.

Can you tell I'm slightly bitter about this particular site? 🙁 Oh well...rant over.

Hello All-

I am visiting Chicago for an interview later in January and I was hoping some of you guys who are knowledgeable of the city could point me in the direction of some hotels and/or neighborhoods that are decent???

Thanks in advance!

I can't give exacts since I'm not sure where you're interviewing but one basic tip is that public transportation is your friend! You can take the blue line from O'Hare to downtown Chicago for $2.25 whereas a taxi would cost $40+... The CTA workers are also super helpful/knowledgeable if you're having trouble figuring out where you need to go/get off. If you're not feeling comfortable with the train system, you can look into the Go Airport Express shared shuttle system... It's probably closer to $30.00 but it would take you from the airport directly to your hotel (but costs less than a taxi because its a shuttle that may make multiple stops at hotels on the way to and from the airport depending on how many people are in it).

Any hotels you can find along the blue line should be in pretty decent areas (with the only possible exception I can think of is near the Belmont/Logan Square stops which can get sketchy in certain areas). Generally speaking, the south side and the west side can have some not-so-friendly areas but the north side is typically okay (since many of the trendy/affluent neighborhoods are located there). I can't speak directly about hotel recommendations since I moved here for school and haven't stayed in any haha but the ones directly near O'Hare or in the middle of downtown will be in the expensive side... Yet at the same time, commuting in Chicago is hell! So if you look for cheaper options further away, factor in pleeeenty of time to get to your interview on time. Technically, I used to live 20 minutes from downtown Chicago via car... Yet it usually took anywhere from 35-70+ minutes during rush hour to get to school and approximately 45 minutes on the blue line.

Anyone hear from Child & Adolescent Behavioral Health? Today is their notification deadline and I think it's after 6PM for them...I know they have until midnight but I can't wait anymore! :bang:
