11/16 - personalized email invitation to interview (neuropsych track) at the University of Florida

congrats! such a great site ;0

Just like last year, I'm disgusted by the number of sites that have sent out invites, but haven't bothered to send out any rejections. I wish that APPIC had firmer guidelines for sites that invite people fairly early, and then drag their feet on sending rejections until the absolute last minute. Duke SOM, I am looking at you.

One thing to keep in mind is that some sites do rolling interview offers. I remember a couple years back when I was going through interviews and talking with other applicants, I'd already interviewed at a few sites that had afterward then notified a new "batch" of students with interview offers/rejections.

Definitely, some programs do invite on a rolling basis. However, there are programs that did not do rolling invites, and still allowed several weeks to pass between sending out one mass invite email, and then sending out one mass rejection email. There's no justification for holding onto those rejections for that long.

Even for those programs that do rolling invites, if your application deadline has passed and you received 200 applications for 40 interview slots, you can't possibly tell me that all 200 applicants are under equal consideration right up until Dec. 15th. Maybe you've got 30 applicants who you clearly want to invite, and another 30 who are in the running for the remaining 10 interview slots. Great, it makes sense that you need some time to narrow that "maybe" pool down, and to see if anyone turns down an interview slot. In the meantime, you've got 140 applicants who have no shot at an interview, and there's no reason to keep them waiting for several weeks.

I'm not saying that programs must send all invites and rejections on the same day, but once you've identified the bulk of applicants who are not going to be interviewed, let those applicants know within a reasonable time frame. There is nothing to be gained from holding that information back.

Hi, I just wanted to share that yesterday I received a phone invitation for the Salem VAMC in Virginia, in case that is useful to anyone.

I didn't see it on the main list or mentioned in any individual messages on the interview thread so I figured I would post with an update.

Email invitation to interview at University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, child track. Interviews are 12/7, 12/14, 1/4, 1/14.

Phone call today for interview with adult neuropsych track at MGH!

Does it seem like there is a particular time of day phone calls or email interview invites go out? or is it just random. I haven't heard from anywhere yet and I was just curious.

THANK YOU!

Got a personalized email invitation today (11/16) for an interview at University of Florida, either Clinical Health Psychology track or Health Psychology Underserved track (I applied to both and they didn't specify!).

THANK YOU!

When I applied for internship, I generally received emails during typical work hours (M-F, 8am-5pm whatever time zone); however, I did receive the occasional Sunday or nighttime notification.

Simply put: different sites respond at different times.

Thank you! I appreciate it. Just sitting and waiting is horrible.

Congrats! I have a friend who loved/loves it there. It sounds like a great place. 🙂

This thread will probably be quiet for a few days, but I had a question. It's probably a dumb question, actually... but is there any use for the aapi/portal once all your apps have been submitted?

You use it to rank the sites, correct? But that's not until the end of January/early Feb... is there anything on there in the interim?

Received an email invite to interview at the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute. It came around 5:15.

Thanks paramour! I have my fingers crossed because it looks like a great site. Good luck to all in the interview process.

was told that university of Oklahoma Health Sciences sent out interviews already, not sure how just that they went out.

Congrats to those whose have interview offers, and thanks for keeping everyone informed about sites declining to interview as well!

So, this is probably paranoid, but if a site's submission due date is 11/18, for example, can I submit on that actual day as long as it is before midnight wherever the site is? (I just noticed a site asking for a list of all the classes I've taken and won't have access to my transcript until the day the application is due.) Thanks!

ARGHHHHHH typos! teeny tiny typos. i read these cover letters so. many. times. and so did my GF. in word. in text edit. in pdf. and yet only after they had been am i picking up on them. argh!!

Although it would be nice if everything was perfect, but it just isn't. Every single piece of material I sent out (Cover Letters, Essays, CV, reports, etc.) had typos. I still matched at Brown. Do yourself a favor and stop reading the stuff you've submitted, it's not the kiss of death and it's out of your hands now anyway. Good luck!

Agreed; try not to worry about it, and I'd second ADDICTED2STATS's recommendation to just stop reading the letters entirely. They've been submitted, so all it can do is provoke anxiety at this point.

Heck, I actually addressed one of my letters to the wrong person/school, and I still ended up matching.

I believe the time of day is up to each site... some may wait until midnight, but I know of at least one that closed at 3:00 central time. If possible, I'd submit today (the day before) so you don't have to keep an eye on the time - and in case there are any last minute server problems.

Thanks @ Addicted2Stats and @AcronymAllergy--that really helped! This process is just surprisingly stressful, in that the work required for the application wasn't too bad, I got it all done early, but psychologically the work is heavy!

My internship director last year (at a major research-focused medical center program) told me that "pretty much everyone has typos" just because of the sheer number of documents required. He didn't seem to mind a typo here and there - in fact, he seemed very realistic about them.

Not a dumb question at all, LETSGONYR. You don't need the AAPI right now if you have already submit all your applications. At this point you will use the Match site to submit your rankings and manage the sites you interview at. Did you register for the match yet? If not, do so ASAP at http://www.natmatch.com/psychint/applregister.html

If you participate in Phase II, you will need the AAPI to submit your application to Phase II sites, then go back to the Math site to rank again. If you are part of the Post-Match Vacancy search, you will need to download your AAPI from the AAPI site, alter it and use it for any vacancies you may be interested in after the Match has ended. This must be done before the site closes for the 2014 internship cycle because you will no longer have access to it after a certain date.

Since Nov.1 was the earliest due date, some students may have submit all their apps on that day. So, sites with later due dates may have had the opportunity to get started reviewing apps early. Don't worry if you submit closer or on the due date; you'll still be considered! Best wishes!

Thank you so much. They are tiny typos-one had "purse" instead of "pursue", things like that, but of course I was obsessing. I am now much less freaked out!!

Hey, me too, in fact I had several in one letter, but I still got an invitation. So, there's hope!

Hi folks, I come from a place that is very informal. Wearing a suit would nearly always mean you are overdressed here. So, I have a lot of questions about dressing for interviews.

For women, is it necessarily a suit, or could a nice dress of pants and blazer work? I am also confused about colors and patterns in the suit. I've found some articles that suggest black, dark gray, and navy, either solid of with a very subtle pattern (such as pinstripe). Are 3/4 length sleeves ever acceptable?

If I wear a skirt, would I wear opaque tights with it because of the cold, or should I wear sheer?

I am also wondering about shoes. Do you think a heel is necessary, if so, how high? (I have foot problems, so I need to balance that). Can the shoes be a different color, such as a dark red?

What about the coat? Does that need to be nice as well?

Finally, I can't wear the same boots I would wear outside, is that right? I'll need to bring shoes to change into, I think. Are there usually places to leave our coats and shoes?

Thank you!

I'm not a girl, but at both APA and NAN, people recommended wearing something comfortable (especially re: shoes... keep in mind most sites have a tour of the facility as part of the interview, so you might be walking a lot or on your feet for long periods of time). The consensus seemed to be that skirts/dresses were okay, as long as they weren't too provocative (e.g., not low cut, not too short). They said they'd recommend staying away from anything TOO flashy, like very bright colors or intense patterns, but otherwise... whatever you're comfortable with should be fine. Just be neat and presentable.

I remember someone saying... people are at their best at the interviews, so you don't want your interviewer(s) thinking, "If this is their best, what would their everyday work attire look like?"

As a guy, I'm planning on wearing a suit with a not very flashy tie. I know, I know, totally unique.

Wear a suit. Unless we are talking a ball gown or tux, you cannot be overdressed. no one will ding you for a nice simple conservative suit, but i have heard Td's say negative things about no suit, or about patterned tights, stilettos, etc. you can get good cheap suits at marshals and get them tailored, or even go to jcrew or wherever, find a suit you like, and then see if you can't find it on ebay for 1/2 the price. you'll be keeping your blazer on so i don't think the sleeves matter. I think opaque tights are fine, and comfortable shoes are a must. you don't want to be wobbling around like an new born foal on 4" heels going from building to building in a Minnesota winter. I suggest getting galoshes or some sort fo foldable/compact winter shoe thing that you can easily swap out with formal shoes. do that privately, not in the lobby or wherever. most places will have somewhere to stash your coat and a bag, but you don't want to carry too much.

i have kinda funky glasses. they are not covered in rhinestones or anything, but the are a non-trad color and i am seeing them as my "signature piece", as my interview outfit is otherwise quite conservative. if your suit is simple and conservative, colored shoes can be cute and make you slightly different but you don't want to look wacky--no leopard print or such. i'm thinking more like dark teal heels with a grey pantsuit, burgundy flats with a black suit, etc.

i am going w/ a nice coat. once again, it won't be wrong, and i am also thinking the more put together i look, the more put together i'll feel (i hope) i found a great simple one on ebay. i know that in the midwest it will not be as great as my giant sleeping bag coat, but i figure i am wearing a full suit under it, and it's just for a day. i suffered through far more cold going out on the weekends in midwestern winters, just so i wouldn't have to check my coat at the club 🙂

bless you. you are all doing great stress reduction work with me!😀

I have been passively reading this forum for months....finally decided to register and participate...anything to ease my anxiety. I havent heard from a soul.....and I sent majority of my applications off on October 6th! ....congrats to everyone with interviews...hopefully, I'll have good news soon. 😳

Thanks LETSGONYR and kyril, that was all very helpful. Now to go shopping!

LilMissPsyD, I'm sending you good vibes, I think it is still very, very early.

Thansk, Wandergirl....i need all the good vibes I can get...

Just curious---I'm going out of the country the week after thanksgiving...should i put an away message on my voicemail in case someone calls for an interview?

I went through match last year (with a successful outcome!) and I was out of the country during the entire week of Thanksgiving. I would suggest getting Google Voice (free app) which lets you check voicemails easily via email. If you do get a message, you can call the site back very inexpensively on Skype!

thanks for replying. Fingers still crossed. Congrats on your interview!!!

I think that a suit should be non-negotiable for several reasons.

1. This is in some ways the most important job interview you have gone on thus far. It is standard practice to wear a suit to interviews. Like others have said, it doesn't have to be an expensive suit.
2. You are attempting to convey, both verbally AND non-verbally, your interest, respect, and investment in the site. If it isn't important enough to dress 'your best' to, what impressing *could* that leave?
3. TD's definitely want to get an impression about what your day to day professionalism is like. Can you fit in with their team, can you be comfortable in the role of intern and future psychologist?

That being said- details matter! It does not matter if you wear flats, as long as your pants are tailored appropriately etc. Nice coat, accessorized appropriately (not looking underdone but absolutely not overdone! Nothing flashy, revealing, or unprofessional), etc.

I'd say that if there isn't actively snow on the ground, wear ONLY the shoes that you will be comfortable in all day, as many sites do not have places to put bad weather shoes... I'm not sure you want to be known by the interviewers as "the girl who was carrying boots with her all day..."

I'd recommend NEUTRAL colored (black, grey, flesh-toned, brown) opaque tights if you are wearing a skirt, purely because extra coverage conveys appropriate conservatism in dress even if your skirt rides up a bit while you are seated.

Additionally (I'm tempted not to share this because I feel like its my secret), choose your suiting, shirt and accessories in appropriate but non-traditional styles. In a sea of black or grey suits with white or light blue button down shirts, it is refreshing to see a brown, tan, or navy suit, an interesting (but not flashy) shirt... it helps you stand out amongst a sea of faces, conveys confidence and comfort in professional attire ("Who, me? I wear suits all the time!").

Also- the more appropriately memorable you are, the better. Then all you need to do is focus on what you are saying during the interview.

P.S. I second the recommendation of trying on suiting at all the well-tailored places (the Limited, Banana Republic, JCrew, dept stores, etc... ) and then HIT HOLIDAY SALES!! You can get that stuff for like half off or less! But you do NOT want to be trying on suits at the mall on Black Friday... so try on in advance and then run in with coupons/discounts/sales, grab your size and you're good!

Good luck and best wishes to all!:luck:

Received a rejection on 11/15 from FMC Rochester. Good luck to you all!

Rejection from Oklahoma Health Sciences Center 11/18 personalized email. They stated all interview invites for the child program have already been extended. First notification, hopefully not a trend 🙁

Sorry gradstudent 22. it's hard to accept when these invites come out and we don't get them, even though if one were to get invited to every site applied for it'd actually be hellish, and a even 50% return would be pleanty!!!

Thank you Kyril! I appreciate it. I am hoping to hear more positive news in the coming weeks.

Sorry to hear that. It's still early, and at least now you don't have to wind up in Oklahoma (I kid, I kid). 🙂

I'm surprised sites are sending out notifications on a Sunday. I heard it happened, but I was kinda just assuming it only happened the weekend before December 15th, when they were scrambling to send out all of their notifications by the notification date. 🙂.
