2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

What are people's thoughts on when to book flights for long-distance interviews?

I am on the east coast and I applied to a number of sites on the west coast, but only one of the programs has notified applicants so far -- at least according to this thread. I received an invitation and would like to purchase my ticket for the interview date, but ideally I would also like to coordinate visits as much as possible so I'm not flying coast-to-coast more than necessary.

How are others handling this? Is it ever appropriate to contact a site to let them know I will be in their (general) area that week and am wondering when they will be notifying applicants? I don't want to be pushy, and I also don't want to hold off on making travel arrangements if it turns out that the other sites aren't planning to interview me. Based on last year's thread, it seems that a couple of my sites didn't send out notifications until Dec, and by that point the tickets will be so much more expensive. For all of us who applied to geographically-diverse programs, this process is going to be extremely pricey as it is.

Thanks!

Hope everyone had a great holiday! I hope lots of sites notify us tomorrow. 🙂.

I'd probably hold off another week or so before contacting sites... I feel like it's still early and that they are probably really busy right now.

Is it possible to book flights on an airline that let's you change your reservation without additional fees? I think southwest is like that, or maybe some other airlines (esp. if you have a credit card from that airline) do too?

That's just my hunch though... I'm curious to see others' opinions.

You could look back at last year's thread to get an idea of when your sites sent notifications last year. It won't give you anything concrete, but you'll at least get a general idea of whether the site is an early vs. late notifier.

Unfortunately that was my concern -- I already checked last year's thread and some of the (first round) notifications were as late as Dec 8. I recall a couple of sites writing something in their brochures along the lines of, "let us know if you're arranging travel from out of town and need to know early if you're being considered for an interview" but they were in the minority and I didn't take any of them up on the option at the time.

I suppose I'll just wait it out for now -- and thank you, LETSGONYR, for the tip about Southwest. I'll look into their policies for changing the origin city to accommodate multi-city flights.

Invite (generic email) this evening! Hooray! First notification!

I agree! I am getting nervous about how much all of this is going to cost. I have to wait to by my ticket home to see my family for Christmas until I hear back from 13 more places. So frustrating.

Hardly any of my sites are in the town that I live in....I'm scheduling by state. So, I just got an interview in Florida, but I already got rejected from the other sites in Florida....(well, technically I havent gotten rejected by the last Florida site, but they've already sent out interview invites almost 2 weeks ago...so safe to say....rejection!)....Anyhow, I dont have any other potential interviews in that state or a neighboring state...so I went ahead and bought it. If it is a case where I had more than one possible interview in the same city or state...i'd hold off....but if you got an interview in seattle but dont have another interviews in that state or a neighboring state....I'd just get the flight and save the cash....just my 2 cents...good luck!

I would definitely check into Southwest as an option. Last year for interviews I had to rearrange my flight last minute (aka one week beforehand) because of a last-minute addition of an in-person interview. I was supposed to fly into Ontario (CA), but changed it to LAX. All I had to pay for was the difference in the price of the ticket. You could also buy a one-way ticket for now to accommodate the interview you already have scheduled, and then as more get added, you can adjust the arrival date if needed and add the second leg of the trip later.

Worth checking into. Also maybe consider flying into a centralized area and renting a car. Like if you had a number of Southern California interviews, you could fly into LAX and rent a car to get to Northern LA and all the way down to San Diego if needed.

Rejected from Dartmouth neuro via generic e-mail on 11/26.

So I got an interview invite from the Houston VA last Tuesday night at about 6:30 p.m. I replied within about 10 minutes to indicate my 4 preferred dates for the interview. The problem is that those are basically my only open dates left in January, and I still have not heard from Houston confirming which date they've scheduled for me. I'm worried that if I receive another invite today, I won't even be able to schedule an interview because I have no availability. I know they were probably out of the office over Thanksgiving weekend, but it looks like others are receiving invites today, so it sounds like everything's starting up again When do you think it would be appropriate to send an e-mail inquiring about the scheduling of the interviews? Houston is one of my top sites on paper, but I still haven't heard from a couple of my other top sites, and I don't want to miss out on their interviews because I've made all of my open dates available for Houston.

Do you think close of business tomorrow is appropriate to call Houston? Cross that bridge when you get another interview. Or...book the date and then call Houston VA and let them know that day is no longer free. They understand the process. It'll be fine.

I know it's still early in the game but I'm a little concerned that I haven't heard from a single site out of 20+ applications that went out :0/ this is my THIRD year applying and the anxiety is at an all time high! I keep watching the notification list grow and others discuss booking trips. Anyone else still notification-less??

I'm not notification-less but I've heard from only 1 (rejection from long-shot) out of 21

Thanks, LilMissPsyD. Since I replied so quickly, I assume I'll get one of my top two dates, so I'll look at scheduling the other two if I do get another invite. This scheduling process is almost worse than the application process itself!

I'm still sans notification as well! I try not to be an anxious person...but I did just tell my husband that I'll likely throw something if I don't hear from at least one site today. I think we have some leftover sweet potatoes in the fridge that should do nicely 🙂

I am also finding this to be a brutal process... I'm waiting on 17 sites and know that from today on, I could really hear.... :scared::annoyed:

Three rejections.....12 more to hear from....not enjoying this at all.

Yes, no news for me either. However, it seems that most of the sites I applied to haven't notified people. It looks like from the Boston Consortium brochure that they plan to let people know on 11/28. Like most of you, I am hoping today will be a day for notifications. Regardless, I am spending quite a bit of time refreshing this page, checking my email, and reading last year's forum. Anxiety likely not well spent, but we are only human.

In the same boat as a lot of you. I applied to 15 places and have heard 1 back which was a suprising rejection. I'm procrastinating my anxiety. I've decided that I'm not going to worry about this all until about December 15th. Heck, there's always phase II right? I worried and worried and applied to the wrong places last year. This year, I'm just going with it. It'll work out, and I'll probably be very happy with where I end up. I've told myself if I end up at a place that is a backup and not oriented to what I want to do (bmed stuff, suprise!) I'll just seek out those opportunities next year post internship.

Oh btw, though I've only been rejected by one, I think two other places I applied to have sent people on here invites. So it's kinda (maybe) like somewhere between 1-3 rejections.

One important point I'll make is this: as difficult as it might be, unless it ends up becoming a trend, try not to understand the odd surprise rejection. In all actuality, it could be due to any number of factors, not least of which is the esoteric "fit" factor. Sites truly do seem to care about being able to offer applicants what they want and need in an internship year, and so a rejection may often be due to this component alone.

Rejected from Milwaulkee VA at 10:15am today. Oh well.

Same here! I'm bummed, but trying to console myself because I already have other interviews. But I really liked Milwaukee. Meh! At least they bothered to send rejection letters; two other sites I applied to have sent out invites, but no rejections, so I have no idea if I'm still under consideration.

Ditto! I am driving my husband crazy staying glued to technology all the time right now. And it doesn't help when people get notifications on Sunday nights over holiday weekends either - just reinforces the incessant checking behaviors. Sigh.

I know! I am justifying my checking behaviors and telling myself that they are adaptive! :bullcrap:

Email invite for UMDNJ-UBHC-RWJMS in Piscataway, NJ - the Child Therapeutic Day Program

Interview day - Dec 14th, 8am-1:30pm

The wait is killing me! I keep looking at the list for updates & getting butterflies in my stomach. I've received 1 rejection & 1 invitation, but nothing else. SOMETHING (GOOD) NEEDS TO HAPPEN TODAY! Okay, I'm better now that I got that off my chest. Good luck to all of us!

Received mass email invitation for child/adolescent track at Rush University Medical Center.

I hear that. I've even been checking my spam folder, who knew Blockbuster was still sending out emails? 🙂.

If my sites sent out notifications on the same dates as last year, I'd have heard from two more places already. Though, I'm not expecting invites from the three sites that I'm expecting to notify soon, based on last year's dates. And they're not my favorite sites, anyway. So maybe it's better that they wait, so I can have some good news at the same time. 🙂

You speak the truth, re: Blockbuster. Is this 1998?

The waiting game should be FISH-FISH. Two rejections, no invites yet. What about you?

The same as it's been for like two weeks now... one invite, one rejection. None of my other sites seem to be as anxious to be done with this process as I am.

You'll hear good news soon, I'm sure. Screw Dartmouth! 🙂

Same here - I've only received two rejections (haha, only). I'm waiting on another 19 sites (and 23 more tracks) - here's to another few weeks of compulsive email checking.

The number of times I have refreshed this thread today is insane, therefore I am going out to buy an interview suit. Ah, retail therapy. Too bad I have an I phone, it could have been 3 solid hours of relief from this obsessive checking. Hoping we all here from a lot of sites today. At this point good or bad I just want to know...:xf:

Received a personal e-mail invitation (11-26) to interview at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Interview dates are: Dec 10, 12, 17, 19

one of the sites i applied to was one of the very 1st to send out invites, weeks ago--i didn't get one and so checked it off my list. get ready for the twist -- just got a call from them today!!!

the moral: unless you've been rejected, you may still be in the game!

I also go the email from Central Arkansas for an interview. It was a generic mass email sent out to everyone. It said to rank your interview preferences and they'll accomodate them on a first come first serve basis. Here's to hoping the reply back soon since flights from Florida there are $! 😎

Congrats! That is encouraging. Can I ask which site it was?

so i got a call today from a site--turns out it was not to set up an interview (the admin asst will call me later in the week to do that) it was just to chat! eep! they asked if i had any questions about the program--i don't right then, so asked more about the area, quality of life, etc. anywho just wanted to warn ya'll--i did not expect an impromptu interview and am very glad this was not my top choice, although i think i did okay ish. will be very prepared if this happens again!

wow! that is really surprising! I would not expect that type of phone call either...

I think, based on my longtime presence on this site, that I may be identifiable to faculty/students i work with by the sites I get invites too, so I'm not going to be publicly listing them (i am sending them to NYprincess for the main list tho) but I am glad to give the specific info via pm if anyone wants!
