2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just looked at the notification date for Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center...surely they're notification deadline of Jan 15th is a mistake. That sounds crazy! I know people have heard from them for interviews, but I don't see them on the list of rejections.

Still waiting on:

Franciscan Hospital
Virginia Beach City Public Schools
Lincoln Hospital

I know people say it's not a "no" until you hear a "no"...but I can't help but think that since I haven't heard anything from Lincoln that it just might be a "no".

I can see if they're still planning on sending out invites at Lincoln - I work with the TD (great, great guy!) I did not apply there but I know he would be a wonderful supervisor!

Got three rejections so far today:

Emory University
Illinois State University
U of South Carolina

I really want some good news!!!

I applied to about half forensic and half neuropsych/consortium sites. I have about 520 face to face assessment hours, which were accrued over a year long assessment practicum in my master's program, another year long assessment practicum in my doctoral program, and doing some psychoeducational and cognitive testing during a year long therapy practicum. My research is forensic, but my assessment hours have not been in forensic contexts, so that may have played a role, too.

So far, the only forensic site I've gotten an interview at is the Wisconsin DOC. I was rejected from Patton State Hospital and NE Florida State Hospital, and am still waiting to hear from Napa State Hospital, Colorado MH Institute, and FMC Lexington.

Hope that helps!

I had about 450 face to face assessment hours as of November 1st: they were both forensic and neuropsych (a little bit of psychodiagnositc). I was offered an interview at Patton one of the few actual forensic sites I applied to.

Don't get too hung up on number of hours. Based on what I'm hearing, its how they are distributed and once you meet a sites minimum it doesn't matter very much. Good luck!

Kind, but mass rejection email from Tennessee Va Consortium.

That makes for 5 interviews, 7 rejections and still waiting on 3 (2 of which sent out interview notifications). With only 5 interviews I am having difficulty with scheduling. I do not know how some of you with 7+ interviews are doing this. Good luck everyone!

I had about 470 direct contact assessment hours. Most of my assessment hours were forensic based. I gained most of my assessment hours at practicum site over the course of approximately 2 years. The psychologist I was being supervised only did assessment work. As a result, sometimes it was busy and then there were slow times. I got invited to about 4 forensic/corrections sites. My other invites were to general medical hospitals with a health psychology focus. Although most of my hours are forensic related, my research interest are more aligned with health psychology.

YIKES! Thanks, guys! Sort of what I anticipated though. Looks like I have more work to do. 😛

I don't intend to apply to solely forensic-/forensic-related sites, but I'd like to make sure that I'm at least semi-competitive to get past the initial review. Our program really doesn't emphasize these sorts of hours/sites, so we're at a loss if we want to go that route (granted, most folks really don't have "a lot" of hours in comparison to most folks in any area regardless of their interests).

Email invitation to interview at the University of Utah Counseling Center!! There are two phone interviews you must participate in: the first interview is approximately 45 minutes and includes members of the selection committee. The second phone interview is later that day and is with the TD, approximately 30 minutes. How wonderful that you get some time with the TD!

They provide interview dates/times for you, and ask you to contact them to confirm those times or request new ones.

Open House offered on January 4th, 2-4PM.

12/10 - Brooklyn VA - Generic email
12/12 - Trinitas Regional Medical Center - Generic email

Interesting about Trinitas... what primary areas were you applying to? I haven't heard one way or the other but if it was a generic rejection, maybe I'll get an invite? Anyone else get the rejection?

Made me create a password to access a rejection letter. ugh.

That is completely ridiculous and unnecessary! It's like some of these sites don't think before they come up with new ways to manage their applications. I hope you make a comment about that when Greg Keilin asks for feedback about the match process.

Yes- I found my rejection to Trinitas in the SPAM folder... I know that they sent out invites earlier in the week.. Too bad- the training setup there looks really interesting!

This is what I've heard as well, and I am comfortable with my overall direct contact hours. However, I truly don't think I would have made it past "GO" for assessment hours prior to this year for many sites. I know that there were at least a few sites I looked at that required 'x' number of assessment hours and I was no where remotely close to those hours (or to average assessment hours for those sites that didn't require a certain number).

I don't have readily available my handy-dandy spreadsheet with all the data from back then when I thought I was applying, so I'm wondering where I'm at in comparison to applicants or if I should (a) keep on trucking to accrue more assessment hours, (b) just get any hours that I can (even though I truly don't care about ANY hours other than assessment), or (c) play the wait & see game with assessment cases (ESPECIALLY since I'm not concerned about my overall hours)--which I guess is pretty much the same as A!

I suppose if they're only concerned about their minimums, then this makes me a tad more comfortable; if they start comparing me to other applicants, I may get a bit antsy. :meanie:

Thank you, guys, for entertaining my neuroticism! 😛

That would be great! I am also waiting on Lincoln, thanks!

Is anyone interviewing at Bay Palms (St Pete, FL) who is willing to switch from 1/10/13 to 1/17/13? I am having scheduling conflicts on the 1/10/13 and need to switch to 1/17/13. Thank you very much.

I am so fortunate that I have gotten multiple interviews and am so appreciative that i am in this position, but scheduling is OUT OF HAND. out of hand!

Invitation via email to IU Bloomington telephone interview with open houses 1/18 and 1/25.

I'm very glad to get the interview, but I think I'm also glad I don't have 14 interviews! 😛

Yeah, their program looked very interesting. Oh, well!

I find that my rejections have been going to spam as well. Maybe I should add a filter to bounce them right back with a note "Sorry, the mailbox is already full...of rejections. Try to re-send with an interview date"

lol- awesome... If I were a training director and someone responded in such a manner I would- without a doubt- rethink interviewing them purely for their ability to creatively respond to a disappointing situation... 🙂

VA Maine Healthcare System interview (general internship) - personalized email; 😍
dates: Friday, December 21, Tuesday, January 8, Friday, January 11, Tuesday, January 15, Tuesday, January 22, Friday, January 25

Interview with Kansas State CC (generic email, phone interviews as noted above), and Iowa State Counseling Center (phone interviews in December, Open House Jan 3)!

A friend just got an invite to Henry Ford (I think Health track, but I'm not 100%), so those invites are still rolling! For all of you who haven't heard yet, there's still hope! :xf:

University of South Carolina sent out invitations email yesterday and rejections today. Not sure on interview dates.

Yes! Finally got that Allexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Adult Track interview 😀
Also got a personalized phone call invite from Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan.
Personalized rejections from FCI Terminal Island and Trinitas.
That brings my total to 11 interviews, 7 rejections, and out of the forensic adult tracks I have received FAR more state hospitals than BOP invites. Who knew, considering the fact I worked for them for two years? 😀
Also, come on Napa, and good luck to everyone who applied there!

Rejection from University at Buffalo Counseling Center via general email. That's three rejections from counseling centers in the last two days (only received an interview at 1 out of 4 CC's). I want to go to a VA or medical center, but I applied to counseling centers as safeties because I thought I was especially qualified from them. Apparently not.

Just got a phone call inviting me to interview at the Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) for January 8th. I'm very excited.

6 interviews, 2 rejections, 1 wait-list, and 6 still left to hear back from

Hope everyone is staying busy and distracted!!

BFF got Kane County Diagnostic Center today. Someone called to schedule an interview. 😀
So proud!!

ABBHH has some sweet stuff going on there.

Congrats all the way around! 👍

Just heard from Albany, by phone - interviews are throughout the week of 1/7/13.

Counseling centers seem to have a way of "sniffing out" individuals who are truly interested in sticking with the CC route for a career. At least in my experience, applicants who interview/match at VA and academic medical centers don't often receive many interviews at CC's, and vice-versa. Although a large part of that may be due to the two cohorts of individuals not cross-applying very often.

A very nice phone call from a secretary offering me an interview came today around 2:15 pm CST. Dates were 1/8 and 1/9 with half day interviews either in the morning or afternoon.
:soexcited:
I have been praying to just about any thing possible for an interview in Colorado!

Anyone have an update for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health?

I'm wondering too...

Not sure if this is helpful, but 2 people from my program received interviews there. I have no further details about it because I only heard through the grape vine. I haven't been tracking backward to see if you guys knew this already so I apologize if it's repeat news.

I didn't realize they had an internship site. Are they accredited?

Just Appic. Not APA. But check them out on the appic directory. If ur hardcore forensics like us....it's pretty comprehensive training!

Thanks. Any idea of when they heard?

Yeah, I've spoken with some people who received their practicum training there, and it sounds like a great site just on that level. Unfortunately, if it's not APA-accredited, I wouldn't be able to consider it as our program does not allow us to apply to unaccredited sites. Knocks out some great looking sites.
