2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, all!
I am sorry if this question has already been asked.
I was invited for an interview via email to AACI yesterday around 3:00 PM.
I was told to contact them with a few of my interview time preferences to set up the interview.
I called within 10 minutes and left my preference on their answering machine.
I told them I wasn't sure if she preferred me calling or emailing, so I sent a follow up email with my interview preferences in writing.

I have not heard back, and its been over 24 hours.

How long should I wait before calling and following up?
I know they are busy and I don't want to pester them, but then again, I don't want to miss out, either.

What do you think I should do?😕

Has anyone heard from any of the other Central Cali Psych Internship Consortium sites besides PSC? I'm waiting on the State Center Community College site. >.<

Hi Skiibunnie, I am waiting to hear from the State Center Community College site as well! Hopefully we will hear something tomorrow!

I think you could do it tomorrow if done tactfully. Saying something along the lines I am just following up because getting to your site is a priority to me and i just want to make sure I am not scheduling something else on that day/time. They have to understand that alot of places will be trying to schedule interviews tomorrow.

How is it that I am still waiting on 10 notifications at this point? This feels like a cruel joke. :bullcrap:

Generic email rejections from both:

UT Dallas
Santa Clara University

My interview total is at 4 (which is MUCH better than my 1 interview last cycle). But I am thinking that I may not get anymore. Just a hunch...

Waiting on 9...

Invitations to:

Didi Hirsch-personalized email 12/13 (Open house 1/7 and 1/14 with interviews the three days immediately following the open house)

🙂

Also child, or was this for adult?

Congratulations! I was a practicum student there last year, and totally love their training program. Where did you leave the message? In Dr. Lee's answering machine or the general machine? If it was in the general answering machine, I would suggest you call back and request to speak with whoever your contact person is...but they are probably trying to arrange their schedule right now 🙂

I got a rejection from Lake Forest College earlier today via generic email.

I also got a personalized (and super nice) email offer from University of Connecticut...a newer program and not accredited, but I'm extremely excited nonetheless. Interviews are via phone from Jan 7-10, open house is Jan 18.

Boy! I hope you are celebrating the 12 invites. That's incredible and really increases your odds at matching. Congrats! 👍

Thanks ClinicalPsy1002! I am pretty excited. There is no time to celebrate though, because I have a few papers to finish up before the end of the semester. Also, kind of skeptical about the whole process... Maybe I'll hold off on the celebrations until Feb. 22 - if I match... :xf::luck:

Since the 15th is only a deadline suggested by APPIC, I'm guessing there will be a small proportion of sites that will wait until next week.

If the site's APPIC listing says the 15th aren't they expected to follow that? I also had most sites reiterate that date in their brochures/websites. I hope they don't wait until Monday 😱

Just received a personalized email from HealthPoint Renton. It was very nice and encouraged me to reapply should (a) they have openings in the second round - which they did last year, and (b) I not match in phase I - oh dear god please no I don't think I can take more of this.

That last part = my exact response when I got my 11th rejection today and realized I still have 10 more sites to hear from. I have 2 interviews but all these rejections are killing me! That's a very nice email to get though, if it has to be a no.

Woohoo! Congrats!!!
I've heard awesome things about that site!!!

I'm waiting for a response from the Northern CA consortium- the only site that is well matched and affordable enough for me to attend and still be able to feed my goldfish. 🙂
Haha, well put. I got an interview at the Central California Consortium too, the PSC - it does sound like a good internship but not very affordable at all... And I have a cat. He eats more than a goldfish 🙂 Have you heard good things about the Psychological Service Center specifically, or about the consortium in general? Thanks.

I've had a couple sites respond a few days later- It's likely that they just have a ton of incoming calls/emails and I like to think they're coordinating as efficiently and fairly as possible. I bet it was pretty good that you replied in such a short time frame though!

If the site's APPIC listing says the 15th aren't they expected to follow that? I also had most sites reiterate that date in their brochures/websites. I hope they don't wait until Monday 😱

YES. If they give you a date, they have to follow that. So, the 15th is the "suggested" date by APPIC, but the sites have to follow whatever date they say. If you don't hear anything after this date, Greg Kellin suggests contacting the site to inquire about your status.
I think most sites will respond today, but many might respond tomorrow. Other sites may just notify applicants of a later deadline. For example, Mississippi State Hospital sent out an email a few days ago stating that since they extended their deadline to 11/30 for Hurricane Sandy that they would now let people know on or before 12/19 instead of 12/15. So we should be hearing from sites (that have 12/15 listed) either way, by tomorrow!

OMG INVITATION FOR CLEVELAND!!!!

Track specific dates:
Mental Health: MONDAY, JANUARY 7

Neuropsychology: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9

Health/Gero: FRIDAY, JANUARY 11

Non personalized email. OMG!! 🙂

I sent this to nyprincess, but since she hasn't updated for several days now, I will post it here too, in case no one else has.

Personalized invitation from WPCS, Oregon sent by email late 12/12/12. Interviews between 1/14/13 and 1/29/13. They last approximately 2 hours. :soexcited:

Hey guys,

In one of Greg Keilin's updates a few days ago, he sent around info about a program:

APPIC Member #: 2253
Site Name: UCSF Child Trauma Research Program
Location: San Francisco, CA
Training Director: Nancy C. Compton, Ph.D.; [email protected]

We are pleased to announce that the UCSF Child Trauma Research Program is now an APPIC-member program. We have extended our application deadline to Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 5:00 PM PST. We are recruiting for three full-time interns and offer a stipend in the amount of $22,032. Please see our APPIC Directory listing or our website for more information about our internship program: http://www.childtrauma.ucsf.edu.

The APPIC website still lists them as non-accredited. Anyone know if this has changed recently? I can't really tell from their website....

Thanks!

Fresno is incredibly affordable. They just remodeled the PSC and it's looking great. Some of the supervisors are incredible! I did my practicum there in the Health Rotation and I have nothing but awesome things to say about that rotation and supervisor. I've also heard great things about the child and family as well as the depth rotations from classmates.

I had this issue with another site I applied too. I would assume that it is APPIC accred., as the emails are probably the latest news and most up to date. They probably just haven't changed their status on the APPIC page.

I applied here after I found out they got APPIC accred, seems like a GREAT program!

APPIC is not an accreditation; I believe you just fill out a form and pay a fee to be listed in the directory and participate in the match.

APA accredits programs, but that requires a site visit and other hoops to jump through. Greg's email does not mention APA accreditation (or accreditation at all), and so I would assume that the internship(s) in question is NOT accredited.

I meant APPIC, not APA accred. The site just became APPIC.

Right. APPIC is a member group, it's not an accrediting body. You pay to be a member.

EDIT: sorry if I'm being a little harsh, I just got a rejection from Allegheny general hospital and I'm in a foul mood. Blah.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the CTRP's accreditation. Looks like I messed up - I applied there a couple of days ago after seeing the notice, wrongly assuming that they were announcing that the site was newly APA accredited. Total mistake on my end. I do not think I would be interested in training at a non-accredited site. Any advice on what to do should I be offered an interview? How do I politely decline and not look like a complete idiot for my mistake?

No worries. I guess using APPIC accred together doesn't make sense.

Sorry about the Rejection. 🙁 I got rej from one of my favorite sites yesterday and I'm still feeling the burn. 10 more sites to hear from...let's hope today is busy.

Allegheny General Hospital rejection just now. Sucks I liked them alot and interviewed there last year. Bummer

Oh, hmm...I feel like I remember seeing a couple people post for the child track, but I may be confusing myself now!

I heard from them (St. Luke's) on Wednesday 12/12. I think they are rolling invites.

Actually it is not that simple to become APPIC approved. You have to fill out an extensive application and meet specific criteria--it can actually be a very stressful process. One of my practicum sites just went through this process, so that's how I know there is a lot more to it than a fee.

I'm sorry to hear about your rejection--hopefully better news is on the way soon!

What!!??? I'm sorry to hear that. That's an example of how irrational this process is. Seems like it all depends on how the wind is blowing that year...that day...how temperamental your reviewer was. Honestly, what was it about your application this year that was a no-go...

Sorry to hear about rejections and congrats to those who have received interviews.

Received email notification of interview to The Association for ******ed Children yesterday, but I can't make the three dates they gave me due to my other interview. Good problem to have, but I really hope something works out with that one.

Good luck everyone!!!

I really wanted to apply there, but missed the deadline. Good luck!

Has anyone heard from UCLA CAPS? I just noticed their notification date is listed as 12/12.

Missing the thrill of waiting on major news. Only 4 to hear from and not particularly hopeful about those. I am grateful for my 7 interviews and have come to terms with my 9 rejections. Best part was getting invited to my three top sites, which definitely offsets the blah feeling of other sites not being interested...Good luck to all who are still waiting today!!! I'll be watching today's turn of events with excitement for everyone!

I have 10 sites left and it's nearly 11 am here. WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD FROM THEM YET?!?!

Granted, 4-5 sites have a 1 hour to 4 hour time difference...but still.

In the same boat, guys. A few sites to hear back from, 4 in particular that I'm really hoping to hear from. Sadly, none of those have deadlines dates today so I've realized all I'll get today is likely to be rejections from other sites. Suck.

I'm still waiting on 9 sites as well... I have this sneaking suspicion some sites are going to be later than the December 15th deadline due to having extended their original deadline for Hurricane Sandy. I'm sick of waiting! I like how I thought it was all nice of them to give us more time for those impacted by the hurricane but now I'm too impatient to give them extra time to go over applications! I just want this week to be over lol

I agree, when will this process be over???
