Does anyone know of any openings or programs accepting applications for the 2013-14 fellowship year? I have been going through the pathology outlines list for a few months now and finding a good portion of the postings have been filled. They must fill within a day or few of the post it seems. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.

You probably should be more specific as to what kind of subspecialty fellowship(s) you are, or are definitely not, looking for.

I wouldn't particularly recommend searching on pathologyoutlines, certainly not solely. FREIDA isn't necessarily always up to date either, but it's a better list of what places have what fellowships.

You need to start calling fellowship directors and asking about unexpected openings.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am mostly looking for GU or GI. I am trying to do a subspecialty fellowship I am actually interested in. I have not ruled out breast or gyn. I would like to make myself more marketable, but am finding at job interviews that the suggestion from the interviewer(s) is to do a subspecialty as that is really what they are looking for (11 times experience out of 12). My experience over the past year has been bad in this regard. When contacting programs or checking to make sure my packet is complete, I have run into a stone wall. Either the secretary/coordinator reads me off for even calling to check or refuses to respond to an email or voicemail. Any advice for this type of situation?

It is pretty sad that jobs require that you need a subspecialty fellowship nowadays. You can't just do a general surgical pathology fellowship and feel confident about getting a good job. You need to subspecialize. I understand why but seriously doing a GI fellowship looking at normal bowel mucosa everyday? C'mon. There are your occasional cases of dysplasia etc. that are helpful but looking at normal mucosa (I would say >90% of the time) for ONE WHOLE YEAR versus doing a surgpath fellowship at a large institution with multiple subspec fellowships and gaining exposure to everything?

I think going to a good surgpath fellowship with a good mix of cases in multiple fields (plus you are able to do electives) is much more helpful to you in becoming a good surgical pathologist than a subspecialty fellowship. But I guess that is where our field is moving towards now: subspecialization.
