2014-15 PM&R Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No invites in the last week or so. I think I am probably done. Would have loved to get Hopkins. Oh well. Had some great interviews so far. Kansas was MUCH better than I expected and RIC... Well, it was just as incredible as I thought it would be.

I'm still hoping for an RIC invite, maybe that's not being realistic 🙂 Or I guess I would take a rejection for some closure.

Hey, so I'm sure this question had been asked and answered at some point but I thought I'd ask this here since I couldn't find the original q, and I thought this may help people in my situation.

If I received my ck score back just recently (ie this past week), would it help to email/contact programs that I'm interested in but haven't heard back from and if so, how should I go about it? Should I email some programs I'm set up to interview at as well?

Had my first PM&R interview this past week, hope everyone's pumped for this season

Fellow osteopaths...

My Michigan State point of contact got back to me. They are still looking through applications and haven't sent out any invites yet.

That seems super late. To be honest, at this point I don't think I can make any room in my schedule.

Me neither...but who knows. I still have a little bit of money left...so it will probably come down to whether or not I have other commitments.

Where are the uci invites? 🙁 I'm a Californian and would interview there just for the location haha

LOL. I feel ya. I lived in Long Beach for three years and LOVED IT! I would love to go back. I applied but will likely be overnighted my rejection letter any day now because I didn't take a USMLE.

Georgetown sent an automated email essentially confirming that I'm in LIMBO. My application has been selected for "further evaluation". 🙂

Yep, just got that message too. I wonder if this just means we're on a waitlist for cancellations...

Probably...

I am a fantastic consolation prize.

I wonder if they also sent out rejections as well.

I have Carolinas interview 12/19 but 12/8 would help me out so much! Is anyone interested in switching?? In return I am offering lots of gratitude and good vibes

Fell off the face of the earth for a while. Here are my interviews if anyone in the future wants info. Applied to 40 programs (PM&R, not including prelims/TY), accepted 12 offers, denied a few at this point, probably not adding any more interviews unless I cancel some now, I am comfortable ranking 12.

Offers scheduled: DMC/Wayne state, Marionjoy, ECU, Albany, SUNY downstate, Georgetown, Mayo, University of Kentucky, Louiville, Kansas U, University of Minnesota, medical college of wisc

Can't remember all denied offers, denied 3... 2 other programs in Michigan (the other Wayne state and one more) and one of the texas programs (too far south for my taste). Can look these up in emails/eras if anyone wants to know.

Rejections: RIC, Washington, Schwab

Yes, Georgetown also sent out rejections, one of which I received, woohoo.

Okay, sad but true here, I only have 5 interview invites at this point for PM&R - my advisor told me she thought it would be appropriate to start contacting programs to check on the status of my application. Thoughts? Email or Call? Will it help for them to possibly relook or just make me look desperate? Or just annoy the program coordinators? Just trying to increase my odds as we all are, with only 5 though, I'm pessimistic at best.

To the rest of you, enjoy every interview and know you're blessed, and please cancel if you really have no intention or interest in a program for the people like me, which I'm sure there are more, to have a shot at matching.

I do think it would be a good idea to contact programs you haven't heard from expressing your interest (why you would be a good fit and why you are interested in their program), and then hopefully it could bump you up in a chance to get a cancelled interview slot. People will still definitely be canceling as they go along. I ended up canceling some later in the season, because even though I originally felt it would be a good idea to go, I got kind of burnt out and decided that if I wasn't going to rank them very high, it probably wasn't worth it.

You didn't mention if you had any connection with the 5 programs you have interviews at (like did you rotate there and they liked you?), because if that's so you can probably feel a little more optimistic with that number!

Is anyone looking to trade for Jackson/Miami on November 21st? If so, please let me know. Thanks.

I got an invite from Minnesota today. I guess new interview invites from cancellations are going out now.

... and a Mayo rejection to go with it.

I know everyone is obsessed with having at least 10 interviews...but the truth is that there are many people with 10+ interviews who did NOT match. I am also sure that there were people with 5 or less interviews who did match. Sure...statistically the more programs who rank you the better chance you have but quality is far more important than quantity.

Most programs interview between 60 and 90 applicants. If you get ranked by every program in the bottom quarter...you can have 20 interviews and not match. It is far more important for ONE program to rank you near the top of their list.

There are really only two ways to know whether or not a program likes you...1) if you have rotated through and have been told such or 2) you get a first batch invite from a program.

I didn't rotate at any of the programs which I applied so I am leaning heavily on the second. Of my 14 interview offers I will likely be able to attend 10-11 of them. Of those 11, nine of the interviews came out in programs first batch of interviews. A few of the first batch interviews I will honestly be surprised if I was ranked within the programs top quarter of applicants (maybe I'm being modest...who knows). That realistically gives an opportunity to match at about 7 programs.

If you have five programs that aren't gunner programs and they like you...you may not be any worse off than any of the rest of us.

Me neither...but who knows. I still have a little bit of money left...so it will probably come down to whether or not I have other commitments.

I knew it was weird that they had been quiet all season..

Mayo rejection... This is starting to become comical.

LOL. I have a feeling that they are leaving me out (for today only) because it is Veterans day. Tomorrow I will probably get the barrage of rejections.

For what it's worth, I was told by a fellow applicant that she had an interview scheduled at UCI in January.

Interesting, I just met a girl from one of the UC schools who said she hadn't heard anything from them.

In other news...

I'm sorry that you a still a little low on interviews. I agree with J4Pac that this does not mean than you will not match, but I know it adds to the stress. So, Dodgers75 sent me a very thoughtful reply when I said I hadn't heard from RIC last week encouraging me to call them. I did yesterday, the admin said 'your app is still under review, give us a few days' and then Bam - invite today! So yeah, based off my n=1, I would also say call. You'll get the admin and not the PD(so it shouldn't bug them too much), at least it will push them to make a decision either way, worst case I think they might send a rejection if they were already planning to. Good luck!

Now to get the UPenn people to answer their phone...

This is not going to happen, no residency program is that thoughtful 😉

AND Thank you for your service!!

Thank you.

I just threw caution to the wind and emailed three PCs about the status of my application. I will let you know how it goes. 🙂

How is everyone doing with prelim/transitional programs? I'm at 15 for PMR but only 5 for prelim...kinda worrying about it

As an update: I inquired about my application status to Carolinas, Colorado, and UAB...three programs high on my list that I hadn't heard back from.

Carolina- This AM the PC sent a very nice email to me explaining that all of their interview spots were filled and good luck in the future. I'm taking that as a rejection. So if you haven't heard back from Carolinas you are either waitlisted or rejected.

Colorado- Very polite email from PC stating that they are still reviewing applications and they will get back within the week. Addendum- rejected a week later

UAB- TBD. Addendum- PC never got back with me...lame.

Buddy with a MSU invitation about 30min ago.

I got MSU this morning. Weird invite... I honestly didn't realize there's only one spot in the program. I have 14 interviews at this point so I'm going to decline it. I need to keep room in my schedule to add some more prelims (hopefully.) Only have 6 (plus the missouri one) at this point, shooting for 10.

Dear Resident Candidate,

Thank-you for applying to the Michigan State University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program through ERAS. As you can imagine, we received many more applications than we have interview slots for.

We have narrowed the applicants and would like to invite you to apply to be interviewed, realizing that we are inviting more applicants than we have interview slots for, and with the understanding that the interview schedule may be filled before we receive your response.

Haha that's weird. Last year I got an invitation from a TY while I was at the gym, and by the time I got home (less than an hour after the email), there was only one interview slot left on the website (they had one of those websites with a ton of dates, and you just sign up for a date). I was pretty sure they invited more people than they had slots as well, and that it was basically first come first serve. Seems weird to me that programs do this.

I got a similar reply from NRH when I emailed them back last week. They're still reviewing applications and sending invites, but it's probably very few and far between at this point.

I just screwed myself by waiting too long to get my flight to atlanta next week. I just added it up I've already spent $2500 on this interview season so far I'm not even half way there and I've been trying hard to save wherever I can, got lots of far away interviews coming up :.....(((((

I just got sent a third rejection letter from RIC. Dr. Sliwa, now it's starting to be rood. 🙂

I thought maybe RIC changed their mind.. But no
