2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know the average number (it know it varies) of people interviewed per slot? Do you think it would be ok to ask this during an interview as well (i.e., How many people are you interviewing for this position?).

If you look on the APPIC directory, they have this info broken down by year (number of apps, how many interviewed and how many spots). I would not ask this bc it would look like you did not do your homework. Just my thoughts though.

I just noticed that UCSD/VA's notification date was Friday (12/5). Is anyone else waiting to hear from them, particularly about positions 4, 5, or 19? I'll email tomorrow, but wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.

Vancouver Coastal Health: Adult Mental Health.
Invitation received 12/5 by personalized email.
Interview dates: Jan 22nd or 23rd.

Calgary Clinical Psychology Residency
Rejection 12/5 via personalized email.

Overall, I am pretty happy with interviews received at Canadian sites. I don't know about other Canadians, but I did not fare well with the applications I submitted to American sites. In retrospect, perhaps I should have focused time and energy on applying to Canadian sites (only applied to a few top choices). Still waiting to hear back from a couple of sites in the U.S.

Congrats! I was just about to ask here if people tend to hear on Sundays but you preemptively (and unknowingly 😛) answered my question and with good news!

The only problem I have with using the Directory information on the number of apps/interviews is they are not broken down by tracks. Most of the programs I applied to have 5+ tracks so I have not idea about how to calculate how many people get interviews.

Yep, same here but for 10, 11, and 14. My guess is they'll notify on Monday like UAB did.

While this is true, and annoying, I think it's reasonable to assume that that number of people interviewed per spot is roughly the same across tracks. So in my case, I assumed (interviewed/placed) == (interviewed-in-track/placed-in-track).

Hoo knows?

Hoo knows is right! All my logical assumptions about the world have gone out the window during this process. The other tricky part is that some tracks have 5 slots, some have 1 and some have 3, etc.

I'm waiting on 19 too.

It seems pretty reasonable to ask this in an interview. If you're concerned it might make you look unprepared, you could say, "I know you interviewed x amount of people last year, how many do you plan on interviewing this year?"

Out of curiosity - what would be the benefit of asking this question? I understand that maybe it gives you some extra information you think you want to consider for ranking... but I'm not sure that's a variable I would weigh highly over fit. I don't think that the issue in asking this question is looking unprepared -- it would be an issue of a site wondering why I am asking that question. It's not a question about their program or fit for my training goals. I can't change the probability I'm asking about by asking that question (i.e., if they are interviewing 10 people for 1 spot). Instead, I think it could communicate that the reason I want to know is because I'm calculating my odds across sites (assumption will be that I'm asking this of all sites) and that this will somehow influence my rankings. Even if this is true, I can see someone looking at this unfavorably (i.e., they may assume you are going to rank them lower based on these odds, instead of things like fit, and thus, respond in kind when maybe you were more highly ranked to begin with?). Granted, may be an innocuous question to ask... and I may be over-thinking it.

Getting ready to book my flights for January, and thought I'd check on my last few hold-outs...
  • Univ of Kansas Medical: sent out invites to Comprehensive track applicants, but any word on the Underserved Populations track?
  • Univ of North Carolina SOM: sent out invites for basically all their tracks, but I noticed that the Clinical Child-Pediatrics track was not listed. Pipe dream?
  • Vanderbilt-VA Consortium: Anyone hear from their Child & Adolescent Psychiatry track?
I know its been a stressful semester for all of us, but at least the agony of waiting to hear will be over soon : / Good luck to everyone in this last crazy week and Happy Holidays!

I don't think sites interpret it that way. I think that they understand that you're nervous and it's helpful to have an idea of what your chances are, even if it doesn't really influence anything.

Like I said, most of my sites told us without us having to ask.

Univ of North Carolina SOM: sent out invites for basically all their tracks, but I noticed that the Clinical Child-Pediatrics track was not listed. Pipe dream? No, I also applied to that track and have also not heard anything - I also asked here a couple of days ago if anyone had heard and no one told me that they had. So I am hoping they have not yet sent out an invite for that track. I unfortunately do not personally know anyone who had applied to that track so my only way of knowing is relying on our list here.

Nope.. still waiting to hear for General track with ASD emphasis... looks like last year they didn't send out info until this upcoming week. Their brochure also says "mid-december" 🙁
I am waiting on Generalist position with an Open Emphasis. Sorry, did not see your reply before posting my own.

I am interested in asking this of one site in particular - it is my top site, but I feel it may be a long shot because it's a big name American site and I am Canadian. I'm hoping to get a sense of how many others are in the running.

I can understand wanting to know, but, how will knowing change anything for you? There is no reason I can think of that it should change how you rank, so asking won't give you any additional helpful information, right? And it seems like some sites might think it's odd. Finally, you often only have 30 minutes to interview with faculty members. so I found that my time to "make an impression" was limited, and for that reason I can't imagine you want to waste some of those minutes finding out how many other people you are competing against

If/when asked on interview to describe a therapy case - what are your thoughts on using one a case you've already discussed in the theoretical orientation or diversity essay? This feels like a bad idea to me. But I would like to use one of these cases as (a) I chose some of my most interesting cases for these essays and (b) I thought about them carefully in order to write the essay, which would make talking about them easier. I've also heard that some sites / interviewers don't even read the essays, but of course you can't count on this. Any thoughts?

I think it is perfectly fine to talk about a case you mentioned in your essays. In fact I am doing that tomorrow! Just make sure to expand on it and cover points not discussed in the essay. Also the interviewer (if they read your essay or assessment) will appreciate having some background from the essay. It also gives them a chance to ask questions. Also you can't say much about a case in 500 words! 🙂

Down to two days until my Spring Grove Hospital interview. Wondering - and really, really hoping - that someone out there has interviewed there before or knows of anyone who does. I'm looking for some information regarding what to expect in the interview - particularly regarding this ominous sounding assessment vignette that we will be given. It is not a forensic site nor does it have a particularly heavy assessment rotation per se. If it was described as a case vignette or perhaps even clinical then I would have no question (and much less concern). But an assessment vignette? Should I expect raw data? Rorschach responses? Yikes.

So, fellow SDNers, lil' help? Thanks.

Hi friends,

I just wanted to recognize that things are heating up and getting stressful. As much as I want to avoid being the corny pep-talker (cue the Full House "**** gittin' real theme"), I am, after all, just a Hoosier Dadoo in the pressure cooker with you all.

Go into these interviews and be yourself. You do not want to spend a year at a site that does not like you as yourself. Yes, it sounds like it's better than not matching. We all want our degrees. But just take a moment to realize that your DCT has approved you to seek an internship, and that means you're ready. You've got what it takes. Don't try to be a walking encyclopedia, a post-doc, a yes-(wo)man, or a "whatever-they-want-me-to-be." Above all, don't act like the sites are doing you a favor by interviewing you. Now is the time to ask for the training you want and to showcase the great deal you have to offer. If you don't know the answer to a question, use your therapy thinking face and say, "Huh, I don't know."

Do you, Boo. Do you.

Their listed interview notification date is December 31st. I would suggest waiting until after that date.

Definitely wait until after 12/31. As much as it drives us crazy - we gotta hang tight. We will all hear soon enough. I'm going have a cookie now. Everyone go get a cookie!!!
