Hey Everyone,

I am starting a post for those applying to med school during this upcoming cycle!

I guess introductions/networking and encouragement for this cycle is at hand here.

So who is excited to apply!!?

Good luck everyone!

- Make sure to get your LOR early (now)
- Apply for FAP if you haven't already.
- Get a good working CV/resume ready now, and be prepared to write a paragraph summary (high quality) for each, so you're ready for the AMCAS primary opening day.
- Get cracking on your PS (don't let it be your Achilles heel)
- You will be tired after the primary, but get cracking on the secondary drafts as soon as possible -- don't wait, they'll pile up fast. Return secondary within two weeks.
- Beast on research about each school for interviews.
- And apply early.
- Apply early.
- Early!

I second this! Also, practice interviewing with a friend/family member. Practice makes perfect! Feel free to PM me with questions, though I applied 4 years ago... Haha! #ImOld

Whats up everyone? Checking in to say good luck to everyone.

Aside from HBCU's does anyone know of other MD programs with a URM focus? I'm thinking curriculum based or just additional programs available to students.

Does the lack of activity on this thread indicate very few URMs are applying this cycle or are people just quiet? LOL 🙁

Good luck guys!!!

From past experience I can say with confidence that many of you will get to know each other pretty well in real life. Why? Because there are only but so many of us haha. Ya'll will know each other's SDN accounts and everything. So look forward to it, because having such good friends will be incredible.

Hi everyone!

I'm a URM and just completed the 2013-2014 app cycle. I'll be matriculating into Harvard Med during fall 2014, and wanted to show some love to this thread. Make sure you get those AMCAS apps in early and if anyone needs an extra pair of eyes to revise personal statements, inbox me!

Wow congratulations on your success!! Seeing your success, what tips do you have for people applying this cycle?

Early. Early. Early. Get everything in as early as possible...AMCAS apps, secondaries, responses to interview invites...everything. Last year, during the summer, I told myself that I wanted to have nearly all of my secondary applications completed by the second week of August. I vividly remember trying to submit secondaries over terrible internet connections while I was abroad in Africa last summer. lol Do what you need to ensure that everything is in EARLY.

I can't overemphasize the importance of the personal statement. Make several drafts and have plenty of people read it. If you haven't submitted your AMCAS app yet, take some time to ensure it's as perfect as it can be. I'd be happy to read statements. Just inbox me.

Good luck everyone!

Hey guys. Long time lurker, but I decided to finally make an account since I'm thinking of applying this year. It would be nice to go through the process with y'all.
Have you guys seen the URM 2013-2014 acceptance thread by the way?!? OMG I'm SO AMAZED. I hope they lend us some advice.

Yes, that thread is amazing. Gave me so much hope! :biglove:
I'm a re-applicant so I'm hoping I don't have to go for a third time and that this will be my year! lol

Hi guys!

I'm an URM female who has completed the 2013-14 app cycle. I'll be attending VCU School of Med this fall and couldn't be more excited! My tips:

-As everyone else has mentioned: APPLY AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE! (the earlier the primary apps are sent in, the sooner the secondary will be sent, then the sooner the interview invite...etc)
-Try your best to set up a study schedule for the MCAT. Take as many practice exams as possible to get a feel for the exam. Do your best, but remember that the MCAT is not everything--meaning adcoms like a well-rounded package. Make sure extracurriculars, the personal statement, and healthcare experience are up to par as well.
-DON'T BE DISCOURAGED! It's easy to feel inadequate when you compare yourselves to other people or don't receive that interview invite right away, but keep hope alive and remember to have patience. Success is on the way!

Good luck!!

Do you mind posting what your stats were? I'm thinking about applying to VCU. Have not submitted my primaries yet. Still awaiting transcripts.

hi --question for all; have any of you applied to a school solely with the intention to try and grab an invitation to a SMP or direct link program?
my sgpa is sub 3.0, pending mcat score in august....I already have my app verified for osteopathic schools. Ive also filled out my allopathic application but have not hit submit yet because I'm pretty sure I don't have a chance at any MD school. However Ive read of many schools extending invites to students whom they would've accepted had their stats been better, so they offer them a spot for SMP...Michigan state college of human medicine has one I believe, and one school in Ohio has one. I also think Meherry does as well. but theres no direct application to these programs so you have to go thru amcas. but i see that $160 and don't know if I should waste it on a gamble, or use it to apply to more DO schools. im scheduled for july 12th mcat, so I'd have to submit amcas like now so it can be verified by the time I get my scores. any advice? thanks.

i'm looking at wayne states bms and IUs msms, but I want to stay in the midwest so I'd like a shot at as many programs as I can. but even better if i get in DO this cycle then everything will be null and void !

Hey! Sure-OOS, 25MCAT, 3.498 overall GPA, I believe my science GPA was around a 3.3. Also, 2 years healthcare experience (through full-time employment) and a decent number of extracurriculars.

Wow! Stories like yours give me hope! I am also applying with a lower MCAT and I am hoping that things work in my favor. Do you think anything really stood out on your application? Amazing E.C., Personal Statement, outstanding Letters of Rec, etc?

Thanks and I'm glad to hear that! Like I mentioned above, I have 2 years of healthcare experience under my belt (medical assistant in an outpatient setting), amazing letters of recommendation, a few quality extracurriculars, and an awesome personal statement.

Edit: Also, forgot to mention SE disadvantaged.

I'm hoping to apply to VCU as well, so I hope I can be a success story like you! 🙂

Checking in as well. Submitted primaries on the 15th. Let's hope for a successful cycle.

First off, GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE! This is such an exciting time 🙂

Submitted on the day the app for AMCAS opened up at 11:37pm. Got verified last week. Waiting on secondaries. Any clue on when those will start coming in?

Good luck to everyone applying!!

For MSU, you have to have good enough stats to be invited to interview. Then when the decision comes the adcomms can say Accept, Waitlist, refer to Abel (the SMP), or reject. I was rejected.

Submitted my app today. Hope I'm not too late lol

Definitely not too late. Anything before July is considered early.

I got my first secondary from Emory on Friday! Applying to 20 schools this cycle. Good luck to everyone!

You're welcome.

Yes, this is my fourth cycle. Thanks, I am not holding my breath.

I am already considering if anyone asks what my latest hobby is, that would be applying to medical school.

How many schools are you guys applying to? I put mine in for 25 schools because my MCAT is a 29. I figure probably best to apply to as many as I can afford.

I would apply broadly and to as many schools as you can afford. You will regret it later if you dont (especially if you dont mind which med school you attend).

Checking in myself. Submitted my primary around the 26th of June. Applying to 26 schools. Thinking I should add a couple more. NYC resident, 29 MCAT (10,9,10), 3.5 GPA, lots of research. Applying to all NY schools and a couple others.

Just realized that last years thread had people verified around late July to early August, seems like a hella long time. And i'm already getting secondaries from schools, it just got real.

We have nearly identical stats lol. Except maybe my GPA is a tad higher and I'm a CA resident.

Ha nice. I'd love to be a CA resident..except when it comes to med school apps 😛 jk. I wish us all luck. Have you been verified yet?

Hello,
How late am I if I submit my application the week of July 7th? I took the MCAT June 13th, so I am still waiting for my scores. I am worried about it since I would not call myself a strong candidate. Should I be worried right now about being late? I have all my LORs and application is filled out.. just need to review and edit hardcore.
