What do you mean by pre-matriculation program? I'm waitlisted at one institution and want to remain in the running. However, I've begun the background check/health documentation for the school where I am accepted and made plans to attend orientation...

Pre-matriculation programs include instruction.
If your orientation has not started and you have not attended classes you are free to remain on any wait list

Or can you see all movement in general from any school, even if those students have nothing to do with your program?

Admissions officers can see acceptances from both their wait list and the list of their accepted students.
No one can see all acceptances until after the cycle is complete.
If waitlist movement has not started by now, one can reasonably be sure that the class is still filled. This does not preclude the possibility that continued poaching may bring the number down to a point at which waitlist drawing must occur.

If the school outright rejects someone, they no longer appear on daily reports.

Given how late they interview and the new nature of their interviewing process it might take some time. That is the only reason I can think of for the slow waitlist movement or the class is full this year early and movement is stifled, which seems to be prevalent in a lot of schools oddly.

If I see more than couple in one day in CA from a NY school...

Each school submits an orientation start date to AMCAS. After traffic day the potential poaching school must refer to this list to make sure that orientation has not started for this student and notify the poachee school of the intended purloinment. This is would be when when the poachee informs the poacher that the object of theft has started a pre-matriculation class (or other similar program).

Does this count for DO school? I am accepted to a DO school that starts at end of July, but previous threads for my MD school where I am waitlisted show that they were not released off of the waitlist until Early August. If I start at the DO school then get accepted to my MD school, where does that leave me?

Have you tried contacting the program and how much do they provide you about your position? Sparingly communicating with the right person can help, if it's not done excessively. If excessive you're just asking for trouble.

I am much more familiar with CA schools and those that take a significant number of CA applicants.
Waitlist movement is extremely unpredictable, even for the officials at the school.
Until waitlist movement starts there is really nothing they can tell you.

In my opinion, I am beginning to believe that a significant number of applicants are holding "acceptances" at schools they don't want or plan to attend and are remaining on wait lists. Thus, bringing the wait list movement to a HALT. *SIGH*

Well at this point applicants are only given 1-2 weeks tops to hold more than one acceptance. And I don't think most accepted applicants would remain on waitlists at schools they would not attend over their current school. It sucks but just try to hang in there.

I agree with @HPY1317 . When I called my top choice admissions office, they said they still had multiple people with multiple acceptances and that this rule of only have one acceptance is not always followed.

Well that is annoying, I know multiple people who were notified by schools after the April 30th date because they were shown to hold more than one acceptance and were told that they needed to make a decision by X date. I guess some schools don’t care though.

Yeah it is annoying. But it is good to hear some schools are actually enforcing it!!

The few holding multiples since then have made prompt decisions (after we called!).

Perhaps I should clarify, I suspect applicants have "accepted" at a school that is NOT their first choice (just to have a spot "somewhere" lined up), however, are not taking themselves off whatever waitlists they were on (thus clogging up and grinding any possible waitlist movement to a halt). Think about it, you might have accepted at "X" school, however, you might be ranked really high on "Y" waitlist school (or schools). I think there should be a deadline on how long you can retain waitlists (please don't shoot me for saying this). I'm just frustrated, like most people on here. *sigh*

As someone who is "clogging" a couple waitlists, I would agree to this only if the schools that waitlist me tell me I'm what tier/probability i am to get off the waitlist or if they tell me exactly what my position is. Which is probably too inconvenient for most med schools to tell each waitlistee

I do know that if you're accepted somewhere and you call Miami (one of the schools you mentioned you're wait listed at), they will tell you whether or not you're close to getting accepted off of the wait list, in order to mitigate the exact situation you're talking about. Dean Weisman said this to my group on interview day- you should give them a call!

Luckily this behavior doesn't really interfere with waitlist movement, though.
I would even go so far as to say it is normal and acceptable.
One should only withdraw from the schools one doesn't prefer to the place one is accepted!

We have given a deadline beyond which an acceptance would be cancelled.

In the ideal world, the applicant would remove themselves from the waitlist allowing others to be "moved up" in rank or given a better opportunity to be pulled from the waitlist which creates movement all around. Again, I'm just another "hopeful" (read: frustrated) applicant like everyone else on here. I wish us ALL good luck.

I'm not understanding how that would be different from the applicant declining their offer at school X after getting off the wait list at school Y. In the end, both scenarios opens up one spot, allowing wait list movement to occur. Conclusion: The applicant staying on the wait list doesn't interfere with wait list movement.

@gyngyn How do waitlists work with regards to financial aid at the institution students are supposed to have narrowed down to? I'm confirming my loan amounts right now and it shows the first disbursement as July 21st, 2015. Orientation isn't until the last week of July, but as long as it's before then I can still go to my top choice if accepted off of the waitlist, correct?

Yes I have and I know several of them personally. I spoke with a counselor and they said there's nothing I can do at this point because the waitlist is ranked. They also told me not to contact at this point because it would appear to be antagonizing.
