2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, from your experience (thus far) and/or from last year, how likely is one to receive an interview from a place that is already in this list but that hasn't sent out rejection notifications.

I just want to know if I should pretty much rule out the ones that are on here from whom I haven't heard one way or the other.

Thank you 🙂

if you check last year's thread, you can see if the site sent out invitations on more than one day (I think this is site dependent).

Re: Brooklyn VA mode of notification.
No, sorry. That person did not specify.
Would it be a terrible imposition to message them to ask?
But only if it's no too inconvenient for you. Otherwise, I'm sure we'll hear soon enough.
Thank you again for everything. If we ever cross paths in real life I'm buying you a drink/coffee.

For those of you who received invites to Rush (congrats BTW), have you heard back yet as to your final date? I have my first scheduling conundrum and am waiting to give another site my dates until I hear back from Rush. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything. It's really only been 4 hours or so, and I know they have a number of applicants to juggle, but I just wondered if we would hear tonight or if it would be on Monday.

Nope, haven't heard anything yet!

I received a mass email (Dear applicant) on 11/19 for an interview on 12/9

The consistent theme (either advice from previous year applicants and current applicants' experiences) was that a site invite should not be counted out if others are hearing back and you're not. A lot of people posted they expected rejections when they didn't get an invite when others did, and then they were like, "OMG! 2 weeks later I got an invite!" From my personal experience, the handful of sites that sent out invites before I heard from them were always rejections. But I'm going to pass along the same advice we heard time and again last year that if you haven't heard, it doesn't automatically equal rejection. It feels crappy to not hear when others hear (which is one of the few downfalls of being so informed through this site because you know for a fact what you're missing versus just being left to wonder hopefully), and it's okay to not love that feeling. It's never over till it's over!

I see that the Durham VA has made the list, but I can't find any mention of it here on the forum. Who's heard from them?

Hey. The person who notified me about Durham sent me a private message. If you have any specific questions about the notification, I'd be happy to forward it to them via personal message.

Another interview date for Bellevue is 12/14!

I see there have been a few people posting here that work at some of the training sites, so I wanted to say something: I wish sites wouldn't send out rejections on weekends (just my opinion, so I'm wondering what others think). I understand there's no great time to get one of these emails, and maybe I'm in the minority, but getting a rejection on a Saturday is a major damper on the weekend. I'd personally much rather it on a Monday, especially since it's a mass email that can be sent at anytime. Also, I can bury my head in my work and move on like I did with the other one I got on Thursday of last week (both of these have already been added to OP). But again, that's just my opinion. I understand it's a lot of work for all parties, and i'm just happy to hear something.

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. A bit of venting in a stressful time and a delayed upset reaction.

Also, thanks to the OP for doing such fantastic work. And best of luck to everyone checking the site, including lurkers.

I know a few people who are responsible for these e-mails, and I have been involved in admissions committees for years. Sometimes all of the free time we/they have outside of their clinical and admin duties is on the weekend. They're not doing it because they don't care about your weekend, they're doing it because it's usually the only time they have to work on internship app stuff is on the weekends. A lot of us who are involved in this process do not get time off from clinical duties and whatnot, we volunteer and fit it into our schedule whenever we can. Just practice some distress tolerance skills and we'll all get through this.

Was curious if anyone has advice on how to handle interview day conflicts if/when they arise. I've heard some sites are open to phone interview requests? I'm also wondering if anyone has turned down an interview outright, perhaps b/c it's lower on their list and they don't have the availability, and how to kindly and respectively turn it down. Looking at all the potential interview dates and there are several that would require back to back interview days, which I don't know I can physically, mentally, or financially handle.

I would just check to see if both interviews are required in person interviews, or if it is just suggested. if it is suggested I would do face to face with the school you are more interested in, and maybe a Skype or phone interview with the other if you do not need to be there.

I would actually be happy to receive any notice- good or bad - as soon as possible, regardless of it being a weekday vs. a weekend. But I usually do as much, or sometimes more, work on the weekend and don't have too much of a social life right now so the difference between weekday and weekend for me is usually small.

Has anyone heard from Kennedy Krieger? I know they sent an email saying they would be sending rejections/invites the 23rd and 24th, with rejections being sent first.

It depends on the site. I'd obviously go with my first choice as the in-person interview. I might email them and just tell them you already have a date scheduled but are still interested in their program and are wondering what the potential alternatives might be, such as a phone/skype interview.

I did a lot of back-to-back interviews when I applied. I just tried to cluster my interviews geographically, and give myself plenty of travel time in between (e.g., I would do three in three days that were all within a couple hours of each other, and then give myself a travel day to fly to the next area). I found that sites were generally very helpful in accommodating this. I was able to interview outside of a couple of sites' formal interview days by letting them know I was already going to be in the area. This way I was able to interview in person at every site that offered me an interview at lower cost because I wasn't flying back to the same area multiple times. I can't say this wasn't stressful, but it was doable.

A bit of an odd question: I like to maintain a curated "scruff" on my face; basically a very closely-trimmed look that's somewhere between a well-kept five-o-clock shadow and a light beard. Does anyone have thoughts on whether us fellows should go clean shaven?

I always advise to dress more conservative than you'd think. I'd go clean shaven if you don't have a well-kempt beard. I personally don't care about it when I interview applicants, but I have heard committee members comment about unshaven individuals before.

I think there are two main perspectives on this question. The first is that you should be as conservative as possible, so as not to risk offending anyone. This would argue for shaving. It will grow back soon enough.

The second perspective is the "just be yourself" perspective. This perspective argues that you will be at the site for a year and if you want to be comfortable where you are, your best bet is to just be yourself and if anyone is offended by your facial hair they won't rank you as highly and you may not match there. And you may also not want to go to a site where people would be offended by your grooming choices.

I think the same goes for women and make-up.

Clean-shaven it is! Thanks, all. It only takes roughly 4-5 days to grow back, anyhow.

Probably a greater anxiety provoker is (a) consistent spam mail and telemarketer calls from the same area as spots you have applied and (b) not knowing if sites are rolling admission or not when you see them on here. Anything definitive is nice, no matter the day- in my mind.

I have to feel like this would not matter - at least I hope it wouldn't...

All about maximizing your chances. We all know the research on snap first impressions and implicit biases. Probably won't matter, but I'm all about not finding out.

I was told by my VA supervisor that a short/trimmed beard was acceptable.

I thought I knew how to prepare for an interview, but after receiving feedback from others, idk what to think anymore

Any chance someone would like to trade interview dates for Saint Elizabeth's? I was assigned 1/15/16, and was hoping to interview on 12/11/15. I know its a long shot, but thought I would check! Thanks.

everyone will have different opinions. mine is always to be yourself. if you normally wear a beard, long hair, glasses, gold teeth, whatever, it's gotten you to this point. no need to change it now.

A short beard, if well-kempt, perfectly fine. Stubble on the other hand, or untamed neck beard, trim/clean that **** up.

I was a cadet for 4 years, and something that often came up was that cadets of Color, often Black and African American cadets, had difficulty with being clean-shaven all of the time. It can lead to a lot of ingrown hairs and breaking out. This doesn't really address the concerns of applicants, but just a thought as we interview folks in the future. There may be a reason interviewees are not "well-kempt" or "untamed".

Fair, but it's usually not close call cases that I see. There are ways to have facial hair and be well-kempt. Some things I have seen involve having a medium length beard, with absolutely no trimming or attempt to make it universally the same length and the like. There are tons of ways to wear facial hair without being sloppy. Facial hair is fine, sloppiness, not so much.

nope. still waiting on this. and mildly confused. are they saying that if you do not hear today, you will be hearing tomorrow for an interview? or, are they saying that both invitations to interview and rejections will be issued across both days?

They said when they confirmed that rejections will be sent first, then invites, but they didn't specify if invites would be across the days or rejections today, then invites tomorrow.

Hi all! Does anyone know if the Madison Wisconsin site that's listed is the VA or another program?

I'm pretty sure it's the u of Wisconsin at Madison and not the va. But I have yet to hear anything from them.

Thanks so much!
Hey. I was able to confirm with the person who notified me. It is:
Univ of Wisconsin - Madison, Departments of Psychiatry, Orthopedics & Rehabilitation Medicine (1628). I'm about to update it on the main post now.

Whoever sent in re: Children's National Medical Center -- is this the DC site? Or another? And if I can ask -- who called?

for those in the know, if a site sends out personalized emails or calls interviewees (so not a mass email) is this done a) in order of desirability based on your application or 2) randomly or 3) done according to some other protocol (e.g., alphabetical, in order received)? Is it typically one (or more) folks that send out the emails or call?

This question is driven by neuroticism but also just plain curiosity.
