2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Opposite of a pro-tip: Don't get so caught up in waiting for new invites/planning trips for current invites that you forget to confirm that you plan to attend your current invite. Guess who just received a phone call telling you that you forgot to confirm attendance from a person their interviewing with next month.... Someone please comfort me and tell me that I didn't just ruin my chances of getting an internship there. I apologized profusely and am still allowed to come. I'm just I assume now that annoying person they had to personally call who couldn't follow basic email directions.

Ouch. However, that you're still allowed to come is a good sign. They may be annoyed but they know this process makes us nuts and is hectic so I think they allow leeway for the neuroses the process induces.

Honestly at this point I'm hoping they didn't take the time to make a specific note of this and in the next month with the Christmas holidays and everything, they drink enough egg nog to just forget....

I asked this before, but I think it got buried. Can anyone confirm that WVU SOM has sent out their open house invitations?

Honestly, I think they'll forget. And the person who's arranging interviews may not be involved in the ranking process (often it's an administrative assistant).

Has anyone heard from Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center?

Asking for some cohort mates: Anyone hear from University of Florida Gainesville (neuro) or Jesse Brown VA (neuro)?

I too applied to Jesse Brown. I heard the health and general tracks went out over 2 weeks ago. If I had to guess, I'm probably getting a rejection tomorrow. Let me know if you hear anything one way or the other 🙂

I am only waiting on KUMC. I applied to both the comprehensive and underserved track. I know the notification date is 12/31, but I am hoping we hear something sooner if it is an invite.

The 31st? that's tough....my last notification date is the 18th of December....the 31st is killer.

If we don't hear from a site tomorrow (and their notify date is tomorrow), can we call or email them tomorrow afternoon? Or should we wait a few more days? I'm still waiting to hear from Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital, and wondering if they somehow missed my application because they did phonecall invites around Thanksgiving and personal email rejections a week ago.

Even if you're keeping yourself focused and concise - SMILE. That exudes the friendliness. Laugh at appropriate times (there is always some fun to the interview process) and express gratitude and a positive attitude. That way you don't lose the genuineness and friendliness but can still be directive.

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. and thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my query!

Those who heard from Central Texas VA, was it all three sites? Or was it one of the specific tracks (I.e., Austin, Waco, or Temple)?

Thank y'all!

YMMV, but I made a spreadsheet of all my travel so that I could remove my brainpower from that area (e.g., date, time, mode of travel, confirmation number, how I was getting to/from the train station/airport/etc.). I tried to visit friends along the way, especially friends who were on postdoc/beyond so they could provide a welcome distraction but also empathy. I also planned "fun things" to do in each city (looked up a restaurant or museum) and looked up food that could be ordered to my hotel. If you can do nice self-care things along the way, do them! For me, I splurged on airport spa manicures and hair blowouts.

Wash your hands A LOT and carry a travel sized purell. Vitamin C. Carry at least a couple types of OTC meds around -- if you feel a cold brewing, it's easier to pop a day quil you have it on hand than seek out the nearest pharmacy. Try to sleep well if you can.

thanks! I like the spreadsheet idea as I need all the help I can get w/ organizing this!

I'll post in the switch date as well, but would anyone be willing to switch a Rush University interview? I have the 8th and would love the 12.

Did anyone get a rejection fron university of Texas San Antonio health science center or just an email saying that sometimes they rank people they don't interview?

I'm replying to myself in the event that others are interested. I was PMed and the Central Texas VA sent invites for all three tracks.

Hi. Quick question. One of my sites just called me asking to do a telephone screening before sending out interviews. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, what does this entail? TYIA

Has anyone heard from Alexian Brothers behavioral health Adult and Addictions partial hospital rotation?

For those that have invites to the Salt Lake VA: Can you see your entry/name in the doodle poll or do you just see a participant number? I'm 99% sure I hit the send button, but I am only seeing participant numbers and cannot verify if I signed up.

So should we expect a wave of news tomorrow? The 4 I'm waiting on are all 12/15 notification deadline.. but I know there's no real penalty for sites not meeting these deadlines. I imagine they try their best, though.

Just participant numbers! I hope you hit send either way 🙂

When should I send Thank you emails?

A few days after? Day After?

I sorta thought a week after would be fine. Now I don't know if that makes it seem very delayed. 🙁

I know people are on the fence about thank you e-mails following internship interviews. Just want to say, on the 5 years I've been on ranking committees, not once has anyone mentioned whether or not someone sent a follow-up thank you e-mail.

When thinking of a very excellent mentor of mine and what he would say...I think he would say no later than the end of the day after. Obviously you don't need or maybe even want to do it IMMEDIATELY, because you want to refer to something substantive and meaningful in the conversation you had and you probably need some time to think on what that would be. Don't worry if you didn't do that, though - do it on your next one. Anyhow, I vote for within 48 hours.

For the person who heard from Missouri Health Sciences, UM-DHP: did you receive a phone call or a mass email?

I'm hoping they just haven't gotten all the calls out yet....:nailbiting:

At a site I interviewed at yesterday, they literally said, "I know there are a lot of questions about thank you notes that you don't want to ask aloud. To be perfectly honest, it does not matter. If you are a thank you note person, send one. If not, don't. It makes absolutely no difference to us and has no impact on our decisions."

This is the one site I really wanted, so I'm hoping they just haven't gotten all the calls out yet....:nailbiting:
I received a phone call; my friend hasn't heard from them either. I'm hoping they just haven't called everyone yet, all the best to you!

I did my internship at a site with an open house and, from my understanding, WisNeuro is right in that rankings are typically determined from the paper application.

So does this mean the interview doesn't play any part in their ranking?

Got this too. Kind of surprised

For people who already heard from Cambridge Health Alliance about the combined child/adult track was it a mass invite or personal?

Got this too. Kind of surprised
Yeah, had the same feeling. But other CAPS responded favorably to me (and I imagine to you too) so this one is surprising but didn't come as a blow. Hope it rolled off your back too.

I've had mixed reactions from CAPS, honestly. I think never being in a counseling center has really hurt my application at some sites.

That is my life story at the VA. You have to have VA to get into VA but you can't get into the VA because you don't have VA. I can't seem to break in though others do.

Haha. You and I seem to be living parallel lives. I have the VA exp, but no UCC experience.
