Is anyone else waiting for Carle Foundation Hospital? They are listed on here, but when I emailed the day after their notification deadline (which was 12/15), the training director said that they were running behind and I would be contacted "soon." On 12/18, I received a nearly identical mass email about running behind. How long should I wait before I contact them again? I'm especially concerned because the post here said Skype interviews were scheduled for the week of January 4, which is coming up quickly. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Secondly, I can speak for NY and say it depends on your price range. So if you're looking for a smaller, 1 or 2 bedroom non co-op on a budget income, those come available every day all the time and you likely would not find anything for rent more than a month out (if you do, it's rare). Co-ops are typically things you can find between 6-8 weeks out max. If you aren't sure what a co-op is, just do a quick google search. There are pros and cons to it.

If your price range is a bit higher than the median, you can get those a bit further out (1-2 months) and also just a week or two before you plan to move.

Basically, it varies wildly, but most people will not find a spot available more than a month out. i got mine by taking a 3 day trip up here 2 weeks before i moved and got a place the first day i was here. Do a lot of research on what you need to have handy (paychecks, bank statements, checks to pay fees, etc) for whatever city you end up in.

I'm happy to answer any other questions you have about NYC, and I'm sure there are others for other cities, but just know that for many of those cities (from what I've heard from friends for Chicago and LA), you won't be finding anything more than a month out, more than likely, unless you are buying.

That's strange. They called for interviews and emailed rejections. It may be that they are overwhelmed because it's their first year being APA accredited and got a ton more applications than previous years.

Sorry for the delay. As you can see above, they sent out the invites today. I'm not sure about "rejections".

Oh, wow! 8 per slot. How does that work? If someone they rank highly isn't interested then it goes to someone else down the list? This is so confusing.
 
Hello! I know many of you have already started interviewing. I do not start until January 6th. For others in that position, I am wondering: would anyone be interested in taking turns doing mock interviews over Skype? As I am visiting family for the holidays, I am away from any of my professional connections who I would typically ask. I am hoping to do some practice next week. Sort of. It goes by applicant first (your highest rank that ranked you high enough). It is confusing but they have a good video that explains it. And because you match at your highest ranked site that ranked you high enough, then you are better off submitting your true preference because it won't hurt your chances with your lower ranked sites. Hard to type this, but it will make sense if you watch the video.

Do you happen to have the email for the Training Director? Perhaps you could send a friendly follow-up email inquiring about the phone call.
 
I am waiting to hear from my last site, which says their notification date is 12/26. From reading thru the forum, it seems some others have heard AFTER a notification date. I find it hard to believe that it's actually 12/26, its the day after Xmas and a Saturday. When do you think its appropriate to reach out to them?

How are you all keeping busy between interviews or as you're waiting to interview? I'm trying everything in my power to keep busy through cleaning and binge watching as many Netflix and Amazon shows as I can. I want this process to be over already.

The admin asked me to give her the message and that she would pass on it onto the doctors. I thought that was quite awkward. Blurg!

Anybody interviewing at the Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Consortium and traveling from St. Louis airport? Please PM me to see if we can arrange driving/taking the shuttle together to Columbia (my flight gets there at nighttime).

For LA, you probably want to look about a month out since tenants give 30 days notice and then they won't want to hold the space for much longer than necessary for cleaning etc.

I thought this was weird advice when I first moved to LA, but the best way to find a place to live is to drive around. Find a neighborhood you'd like to live in that is convenient enough to where you'll be looking and drive around looking for vacancies. Most places are not conveniently listed online but buildings with vacancies will have signs out front with the number to call to arrange a visit. So if you end up in LA and if possible, take about a week's vacation there to drive around and view places to live about a month before you move.

congrats! Canadaigua is such a beautiful town. the finger lakes is an amazing region, if you've never been. not too far from niagara falls if you have time and/or haven't been (about a 2 hour drive).

Whoops!! I meant 1/15/16 and 1/29/26. Ahhhh! I have Christmas brain, clearly!

Thanks for the advice on the region. I used to summer in upstate NY, and love it, but if I end up there would not love the winters 🙁

This is going to be a trip within a trip for me, so turnaround time will be tight. It's one day after another interview elsewhere out east, so I'm praying the weather will cooperate (in upstate NY in January - laughable, I know) and that my flight won't be delayed.... yikes....

Hi...as a Chicago (actually the city) native who has also done apartment hunting in that city, I recall that there are two big move-in "seasons": May and October. That is when literally everyone is moving such that if you drive around the city at that time the streets are literally covered with moving trucks - it's honestly a little hard to get around. Accordingly, I remember that the best and widest selection of apartments and when everyone was looking was April and August/September. Why are there moving "seasons?" Here's why: It's not like there are no available places during the rest of the year, but Chicago is a cold-weather city with a TON of non-natives (and some natives) who don't imagine it to be too fun to move their junk or look for apartments in the cold and snow. On the other hand, it's blazing hot in the summer and no one wants to move in that weather either. However, it's a big city so there will always be something...it just won't be as wide a selection outside of those "seasons." I don't know if that helps, but that is my scoop on that city.

Question for the thread:

I have two interviews in a row, one day after another, in two separate cities. Is it rude to email the first training director and ask them when interviews will be over that day since I have to book my flight for the next city asap? The TD said they would be sending out a "more detailed schedule" but I haven't yet received it.

I don't think that's rude at all. I guess with the one caveat that I would give them at least a handful of days from the "more detailed schedule" email before following up, but if they emailed you to expect a further detailed schedule more than a week ago and you haven't heard, I think it's perfectly fine to follow up and say something polite about the end time in particular (e.g., making it clear you aren't asking for the whole schedule, just the ending time for travel plan reasons).
 
Has anyone had a site email them a rejection and then a few weeks later receive an interview invitation?? They're toying with my heart and I don't know what to make of it 🤔

I did 15 applications and got 10 invites. With that said, I applied to quite a few less competitive sites, which certainly boosted my numbers.

I don't think they're toying with you. What may have happened is some of the people they originally invited decided not to come out for the interview, messed up their early-date interview, decided to go with a phone interview, and/or they made a mistake by initially rejecting you. Regardless, they are definitely interested in you if the last communication was that you have an interview invitation (and you confirmed that with them).
 
Are sites allowed to ask you personal questions, such as relationship status? I know if you bring up the subject first, they can. I wasn't sure about whether sites are allowed to initiate the conversation.
 
Going into interviews, I feel like I have quite a bit of information about the sites to which I applied (thanks to thorough websites and handbooks). But, looking ahead to ranking the sites- I know I need to ask questions wisely of the sites during interviews. The examples of questions to ask given by APAGS and others seem to mostly address information already listed online. For those of you who have done this before or have already completed interviews- any recommendations in terms of “I’m so glad I asked this question” or such?

I got the interview! They notified me yesterday, couldn't believe it.

Has anyone heard from West Virginia University Health Sciences Center Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry (Charleston, WV)? I know their notification date isn't until 1/6, but I emailed the training director about wanting an optional interview and never got any response indicating that they received my email. Thanks in advance!

They say their interview notification date is 1/6 but if you check their brochure, YOU actually have to contact them to request an in person visit. I contacted them and they said that everything was already booked for in person visits (since the first couple days of December) but then they also stated that I was a very active candidate. I've been emailing faculty to schedule phone interviews (that's what you do if an in person visit can't be arranged). I think they only contact you if you are not longer being considered so I would say you should contact them to schedule phone interviews so they know that you're interested.

As I said, I did email them (right when I submitted my application) about wanting an interview and never heard anything. It makes me really upset to know that others heard back about interviews, and my request was completely ignored. I guess my only option is to try again and hope that they respond this time.
