General Admissions & OTCAS 2015-2016 stats/interview/rejections

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am posting this to share with others with low stats. I read this forum before applying and took it all in (read: too much at times) and applied using as much of what I read as I could. After reading that this was the 2nd or 3rd time for some applying, I knew I only wanted to do this once. I have some classes I took in college in 2010 and 2011 that I would need to retake if I waited and also, its just time. I graduated undergrad in 2013 and this is now or never for me. I started with 24 schools I planned on applying to, I ultimately wound up completing the apps for 19. I had a variety of MSOT, OTD, in OTCAS, not in OTCAS, small private, big state university, reach, safety, with a majority of what seemed to be good fits or that looked like they could go my way in one area (experience and dedication to the field) if another wasn't quite as high as it looked like was needed. I steered away from those that seemed to focus on stats above all else and primarily applied to places where people in these forums felt the interview and the experience were most important. I honestly was going to take the first program that asked me, feeling it may be the only one and may get away. I surprised myself by making it past round one at 9 schools so far (some of them only had 1 round and sent an acceptance without an interview.)

This forum was extremely helpful and pretty much on target. I could not have done this without the advise and opinions I found here. Thank you to everyone who continues to post even after they land a spot, it is very helpful to the rest of us.

Thank you! I'm trying to decide between BU and MGH. Any advice from anyone would be GREATLY appreciated. The programs are so different and both seem so amazing so I'm having a hard time!

MGH is a great program, but BU is so much more established. Thats definitely a hard choice, but a good one to have to make! Keep us posted!

I was told by someone at the VCU Office for OT ( because i go to VCU) that if you haven't heard yet that you weren't accepted.. they said they already sent out their acceptances, and that they will pull from the wait list they have but that they won't notify you of denials until late march, April. I mean its possible that you may be on their waitlist, but that was what she told me.

Congrats on your acceptance! Is TTUHSC your #1 choice?
Yes! I was waitlisted at UT Chattanooga, and was told I'm 2nd on their waitlist, so if I get in there then I would choose Tennessee just because it's a doctorate program. But I really loved Texas too. Have you heard from anyone?

Yeah I just talked to them again (also went to VCU!) and she said my status hasn't changed, not rejected/my application is still being looked at, and that there is not a waitlist yet. (Haha I think there probably is, like you said, since they've obviously sent out acceptances). So ugh... :annoyed:

How long do you have to let VCU know your decision? Jefferson?
@OnceaTeacherOT I had 2 weeks to let UNE know my decision (this was back in November though). I had about a month to let Jefferson know. And have until mid March to let VCU know. So it ranged from 2 weeks to 1 month to notify each school. Good luck!

UPDATE: 11 out of 19 schools did not auto reject me with these stats (6 did and 2 I don't know yet). It also appears that I am in contention for a 20th school even though I was originally told that I didn't have all the pre-reqs and could not be considered.

Yeah, I haven't gotten a rejection or anything from them either. I was told I was in the top 100 applicants but that the first come acceptances were already sent out.

they are very, very slow with acceptances this year. I applied early september, got an interview in late october, and accepted mid November. I know the class is not full yet so don't be discouraged!

Yea some people who submitted their applications earlier were invited to send in video interview thingys. It seems that people who applied late still haven't even been asked to interview. I'm not sure what's going on :(

Just got an email stating that I am in the next 10 students who may be accepted to Virginia Commonwealth's OTD program! Super excited, but does anyone know how likely it is for me to be accepted now? Or any advice at this point?

Anyone here get accepted to VCU but doesn't plan on attending?

What has your interview experience been like? My interview is later this week, and I feel like my nerves are setting in. I've been practicing questions/doing mock interviews, but I feel like I'm making myself more nervous---especially when I hear that students with phenomenal stats are getting rejected. :nailbiting: After three years of working towards this dream, it's crazy that it's closer to becoming a reality.
This is also my 3rd year applying. I am hoping this is our lucky year! I know we probably have spent more than enough time and money toward this. Good luck!

I did and I still have not heard back yet. I called and made sure they got my transcripts and GRE scores and they said that everything was verified but I haven't heard yet either. It's good to know that there's more than one person in this situation!!!

I applied in January and finally heard back from them last week. I got a rejection letter in the mail. I honestly believe it's because I applied too close to the deadline. It seems that anyone who applied in January or after didn't get an interview invite and/or still have not heard anything back. It's hard to believe they are still sending out interview invites this late in the game. I honestly believe they are just picking from the waitlist at this point.

Wow that sucks! I sent my app on December 31st maybe I'll make the cut haha but I'd doubt it. I would think you'd need time to do a video interview. I couldn't have applied earlier because of my GRE :/ this whole process is pretty asinine if you ask me!!

Haha I agree. I think they need to get rid of the whole rolling application process in general if they know they aren't going to look at applications after a certain date. It'll save us time and money!

But think of all the extra money they make!!! My daughter just received her rejection letter also from NOVA...she too sent it in right before the deadline. The rejection letter was nice though and really left room for hope in the future if she needed it.

Overall GPA: 2.8 undergrad, 3.0 if you include the pre-reqs I took post-bacc
Pre-Req GPA: 4.0
GRE: 153 Q, 167 V, 5 writing

5 years work experience in special education (ESE)

Volunteer/observation in 4 different environments including elementary school OT, hand therapy, acute hospital setting, and an adults with developmental disabilities residential community (I think something like 300 hours total, but only about 180 when I applied)

Acceptances: University of St. Augustine (St. Augustine campus)

Rejections: wait listed at UF for their conditional admission track

Interviews: USA

I wanted to chime in mostly because in thread after thread I see people comparing stats, but I think it's important to know that the application process is so much more than stats; I know people who had a much higher GPA than mine that were outright rejected from both USA and UF. Your essay, experiences, references, and interview (if they do them), are equally important if not more. If it were strictly by the numbers I wouldn't have a chance to get in anywhere because of my low cumulative GPA. Find OTs and professors that are EXCITED to recommend you. Have them proof read your essay. Obviously my other stats do compensate somewhat.

Just some food for thought for anyone who may be discouraged.

I interviewed on February 26th (I think) for Fall. Heard back March 23rd.

I would try sending your enrollment advisor an email just to check in. I sent one after the 2 week mark since they said we would hear by then. They pretty much gave me a generic response, "if your status changes in any way we will contact you", but certainly didn't hurt.
